2016 Handling is TERRIBLE on Controller

Recommended Posts

I just got the game, been playing for about an hour - and my first impressions are that it's bloody terrible! How with all the community testing, did everything go so horribly wrong?

Let's go back to 2015 for a second, I felt like the cars were more freeing. Like I had more freedom and control over the steering, and the handling model was great with the slidey cars, properly representing this generation of F1 car with loads of torque.

2016 feels completely different, the steering speed is sluggish, I can't control a slide because the driver takes 10 million years to counter steer. This is the same problem F1 2010 had, honestly. I also feel like the steering angle is limiting, always putting the perfect amount of steering lock into a corner. 2016 handling - Heavy, sluggish, limiting. No longer does the player have the freedom they did in the previous game. I get on the accelerator a bit hard, spin the tyres up but it takes way too long for the driver to counter-steer it, even then it isn't applying full opposite lock like 2015 used to do.

Whoever complained about 2015's handling is an idiot, I thought it was perfect as it was. If it ain't broke, don't fix it! 2015's handling on 2016 game would be amazing.

Something needs to be done, I cannot play like this. I want more steering lock! I had a look through the settings but it doesn't appear that you can change that.

It's near to impossible to please everyone. I liked 2015's, but I really like 2016's too. It takes some getting used to, just like with every new game, although this might be the first time where the handling isn't massive different compared to the previous edition. While 2016's is a bit different, it's more of a refinement to 2015.

And from what I've read on here, it seems that people are liking 2016's handling. We'll see if that continues in the coming days and weeks.

It's there alright. Steering saturation in combo with the first two. Then probably needs to find differential adjustment that works for you.

No Assists?

Same here. I feel there is a delay in turn in and when the car finally steers I have to turn the other way to make it straight. I think its because of the lack of grip, 2015 was good on a controller. Other than this issue the game is AWESOME.

I like the game I'm just struggling to get to grips with the handling but I'm sure I will. I feel you need to break a lot earlier to ensure you get the car into the corner. It's hard to get the power down coming out of the corners without having a little bit of a slide also.

I think I figured out what the main problem is. Steering Linearity, turning it up makes the center area of the steering slower, what we need is NEGATIVE Linearity.  I'm kind of getting used to it now, however I still strongly dislike it.

There's plenty of grip, the steering is what's bothering me.

I like it. Set up changes now work which I never felt they did before. Needs work in practice sometimes to find a good balance.

You're finding 2016 hard because 2015 had a built in handling aid for pads, it disadvantaged wheel users like me, I've always been rubbish at a pad but last year in practicing before we started a league I went 2 sec faster in the wet on a pad, needless to say the league was scrapped due to the pad advantage.

One of the guys in our league got 2016 yesterday and he's having no problem with it at all, he's always been good with a pad and he's on the pace with us wheel users, and our lot aren't exactly slow.

I'm on the same opinion and i had the opportunity to be part of the beta test.
In this context i have made my feedback, but it looks like the majority had another feeling.
That's dissapointing for us, but unfortunately has to be accepted.
I really hope there will be some tweaks within the next patches to get it more right for us, too.
Nevertheless, the more you drive, the more you will learn to handle the steering better. That's something i have notice during the beta, too.
And... don't go back to F1 2015, as it really hurts to notice how much better it was here...

I think the handling is better then in 2015. Cars have some weight now and cold tyres are deadly. Getting on the grass or too much curb is lethal.
It feels better in every way. You probably just have to get used to it.

I agree. Even though im slower atm its funner trying to get faster. Im not the fastest driver, never will be but F12015 i had on Legend because it was easy. BTW i use a pad with TC and ABS but still this game makes me work for a good lap. Also ive started Career with Renault and this car is bad

Buy a wheel?

  • Body is 28 characters too short.
I have a wheel. I have a G27 which I use on PC. However I got F1 on the PS4, which doesn't have any compatibility for the G27, I could get a new wheel, however:
  • I don't see the point in buying a new wheel when I already have a perfectly working wheel, perhaps when this one breaks I'll get a new one.
  • There's no where to set up the wheel in the lounge, coffee table is too thick to clamp on + don't want to fork out more cash on one of those table/seat things. I could probably make one like I did back in the PS2 days, but eh, CBF.
  • Sometimes I prefer kicking back on the couch and playing with a pad. I'll leave the simulator stuff for PC and rFactor 2!

Anyone saying the handling is better than 2015 must be playing with all the assists on or driving very slowly.  The game is awful on controller. The input is so sluggish if you are driving at competitive speeds.

This is the third thread on the same subject and the game has only been released for a matter of hours, so I don't think its just a minority opinion.....

I can't try this game until I get home from work tonight, but reading this thread is getting me very worried as I've always been a pad user :(

Pad is fine, it's just different, harder basically. Take some time to get used to it. Don't drive out of the pits and do a lap like last years game.

I actually like the handling. I think its massively unfair to judge it on an hours play.

I've been practicing with it on the tire test practice sessions and have largely got it nailed now. You need to be slow and smooth with the moving of the thumb stick to really make it work. Just bashing the stick left and right does not work with this game as you lose way too much time.

Are you serious? Have you actually played the game? Are you competitive at any of the higher levels of difficulty? Not being sarcastic here, I am actually interested.  I honestly don't believe that anyone that plays with pad and competes at Expert or Legend could think that its ok.
