IS IT POSSIBLE TO DRIVE INTO YOUR GRID POSITION AFTER FORMATION LAP? (F1 2016)

Recommended Posts

Firstly, thank you codemasters for bringing back the career mode etc. to F1 2016. However, I have done a few races on F1 2016 and although I love the new formation lap feature, I would like to know if it is possible to park your car in the correct grid position - if this isn't possible, then please could you add it in the next update, as it would be a great addition and make the game that bit more real. Thank you.

Also, if anyone reading this is interested in taking part in some social races, I have created a website that allows you to enter and create races with other competitive racers - the link for the website is: tinyurl.com/funracing (shortened from: https://sites.google.com/site/sparetimeracing123/)

Thanks for commenting Runalf - I had guessed that it may not be possible, but genuinely was unsure whether I had missed a setting. Hopefully, codemasters will consider inserting it as a feature.

This would be pretty hard to do without some VR, trackIR or some other kind of visual assist. I don't think the yellow line (that the drivers use to gauge how far up they are) would be all that visible, at least from the cockpit view.

That said, I agree- it would be cool to at least have this as a sub-option. Definitely would increase the tension. I don't like how it currently "breaks" briefly to a black screen and then starts. Probably some kind of engine limitation at the moment.

The formation lap is a great gesture by CM, but it is poorly implemented.

Let me explain, in real life, the drivers will burn out as they drive away from their grid spot. The leader will usually drive away at a reasonable speed in order to built tyre temperature, braking sharply to built brake temperature. Towards the end of the lap, the leader will begin to slow down, in order to back the pack up, meaning he won't be sitting on the grid for too long, losing temperature in the tyres and brakes, and overheating the engine. He will probably do some burnouts approaching the grid, to heat up the rear tyres, and then brake sharply to heat the brakes. He will do all of this whilst making sure to back the pack up, before parking in his grid slot.

In CMs formation lap, the drivers pull away slowly, and proceed on their lap. However, they generally just drive around, occasionally warming their tyres, before driving back round to the grid at just below racing speed, almost like a faster VSC period.

I tried leading a Formation lap. I pulled away and did the lap as explained above as they would in real life. I then came towards the grid and began to think about backing the pack up. Rosberg just drove straight past me to his grid slot, so I sped up, and the CPU took over my car a good 500m away from the line. No burnouts, No brake warming, No backing the pack up. It's not pointless, but I would rather have had a better FL in 2017, than this. Not realistic at all.

I agree completely - like I said, I was happy that Codemasters introduced it, but there are a few issues - it would be great if they could fix this during the updates, but as you say, unfortunately it is doubtful that it will be fixed before the release of F1 2017, so another year of waiting I guess :(

Well, I guess they could add some sort of artificial on-screen indicator like the one they use for the pit limit speed warning... though you'd probably need some kind of lateral indication as well as knowing how close to the line you were.

But I agree that just letting people line themselves up is probably a whole much bigger job than it sounds... when you let people drive wherever they want, the amount of extra work and checking you have to do to handle all the things that could go wrong increases dramatically. (Especially online, where you just know people will try to deliberately dick around at every opportunity.)

On top of that, given the fade-to-black that happens between the formation lap and the proper start of the race, I'd guess that right now the formation lap is implemented virtually implemented as a separate mini-game. If so, they'd also have to figure out how to pass all the real starting position data to the race proper, rather than just assuming everybody is perfectly lined up in their box like they can do today... not impossible of course, but just more work again.

You are right.
It is very good that they introduced it, but sadly only 50% of the formation lap are in the game.
Burnouts at the end and adjusting your box angle are an important part of it.

I was really excited about this feature, but a bit disappointed that this isn't possible.
If it is possible please Codemasters, introduce this as an option.
Automatic and Manual f.E.

A bit of the tension that the formation lap build up get destroyed.

I mean in rfactor f.E. it's possible too.
So I'm pretty sure CM can do this as well

Also, why is there this short black screen at the end?
Does the game you load something in the background?

What I also found out about the formation lap, if someone hit you in the rear both get set to the grid which is a bit annoying.

So is there any chance to 1. Bring the option with a update and 2. is there a chance to fix this "both cars get set to the grid" thing?
