[F1 2016 PC] Sudden stuttering/framerate drop

Recommended Posts

It is strange that CM can't reproduce the same thing. Considering a lot of us forwarded our system info and considering that this is happening on a huge range of hardware and software.

I never had a game that would use 90-100% of my GPU no matter what settings I would run. Considering I have GTX 970, I would think that this is clearly not a problem of hardware. Point is - something that is in the game is causing the hardware and/or software to not talk to each other as they should (not optimized) which causes the stuttering and other crap.

For me personally on max settings I get stuttering each lap at least 4-5 times. Some are major to a point where you just make a mistake when driving because the frame drop gets so low. On high settings the frame drop and stuttering is almost not a problem (very rarely visible) - which is nice! But GPU is still at 100% usage, which begs the question - what the hell is so specific to this game that causes this. As people mentioned above - no other game causes this which is why everyone first think that this is a game problem, not the hardware/software issue.

In the end of the day - I appreciate CM trying to reproduce things and I hope that they continue on searching for the problem and getting rid of it. Even if only 20 people are reporting this (consider how many users have registered in this forum from the 70000 game owners?). I am damn sure this number is much higher.

since the problem came lately, I also think its not codies made, its more of a windows kind of functions/driver problem as usual.
some guy posted on deactivatin GameDVR, gonna try this tonight.

but still it is possible that somethin came with the latest f1 2016 patch, which has some unpredictable effects. it would help us to know , what exactly did codemasters update.

I find it interesting that when I use Steam's framerate counter, I often see the framerate drop to 30FS, for example, when the game is on static menu screens...places where there is really no motion or anything that one would normally expect a framerate decrease.

Andrew, please let us know if you need any additional information from us about specs. etc.

I will be happy to send more information as I really were looking forward to this title.

Thank you for looking in to it :)
(It looks to be a bit more than 10-20 people with this issue though)

My pc specs:
Win10 64bit
nVidia GTX770 2gb
8gb Ram
ASUS motherboard
1tb HD (not ssd)
AVG antivirus
Colormunki profile (screen calibration)
Dropbox installed (no files is syncronising)
Spotify installed (but not running)

I have tried running the Game on different settings (low, high etc.) on 1920x1080.
I have tried without Internet connection but it did not help.

Good to see that CM are looking in to it! It's a frustrating problem for the most demanding gamers who want nothing else then enjoy the game.
Also good to see that most of the people want to help CM in finding out where this problem comes from, and so do I.
If there is any monitoring program/tool we can use to help you guys (CM) out, please let us know so we can help the community.

I've tried the following things:
Disabled DVR
Uninstalled Nvidia HD audio
Delete and reinstall the Nvidia drivers
Vsync on/off/fast/adaptive settings (Nvidia control panel)
Particles on/off ingame
DSR factores off (Nvidia control panel)
Energymode optimal power/optimal performance/adaptive (Nvidia control panel)

My system:
Win10 64bit
AMD 8350
GTX 960 2GB
8GB ram
128GB SSD windows disk
2TB HDD for games
G29 Steering wheel
No special mouse/keyboard

Hi,

To give you guys and gals as much info as I can I can confirm that in QA alone we have 58 different PC's ranging from 1st Generation Intel Core i3/i5/i7 through to Intel Core i7 6700K & 5960X and AMD FX 4100 through to AMD FX 9590. We have 93 Graphics cards ranging from Nvidia GTX 460 through to Nvidia GTX 1080 and AMD HD 5870 through to AMD R9 Fury X which can and have been swapped in and out of the 58 PC's throughout the development cycle of this game. We have a combination of Windows 7 64, Windows 8.1 64 and Windows 10 64 installed throughout the test PC's. We have PC's that have the OS and the game installed on an SSD,  we have have PC's that have the OS and and the game installed on mechanical HDD's, we have PC's that have the OS installed on an SSD and the game installed on a mechanical HDD. We have various Keyboards, Mice, Headsets and Steering wheels plugged in throughout the range of PC's and none of our team have reported the issue that you guys are getting.

Personally at home I have an Intel Core i5 3570K overclocked to 4.2 along with an Nvidia GTX 1080 running at stock speeds. My OS is windows 10 anniversary edition which has been upgraded from Windows 8 which I purchased when I bought the CPU and Mobo. My OS is installed on a Samsung 840 EVO SSD and my Steam library is installed on a 2TB Mechanical HDD. I have Logitech G19 Keyboard, Steelseries Rival Mouse and Logitech G29 with the Shifter. I have completed several 100% races at home and I have not seen the stuttering that you guys are describing.

As the Compliance Platform Lead for PC I take every one of you PC hardware Complaints personally and seriously but neither me or the test team have been able to reliably reproduce this issue. Given that there are over 70,000 owners of the game on Steam and maybe 10 or 20 people complaining about this I have to deduce there is a conflict between your hardware/software/OS that we are unable to reproduce here.

We have gathered all the info that you guys have sent and are still actively trying to reproduce/fix the issue.

Regards
Andy

So you are not able to fix this gamebraking issue in this years f1 game, right?
As the game is unplayable for me, I want you to refund me asap!
How can you even say it our own fault, EVERY other game (25 games installed) is running without any freezing - only f1 is freezing so the fault is on YOUR side, not a software/hardware problem on my monster rig!

I dont want to create false expectations but with that disclaimer out of the way i think i solved the issue on my machine after trying tons of different approaches to nail the culprit.

Usually the freeze would occur in lap 1 or 2 but no later than lap 5 but just a couple of minutes ago i was able to complete a 14 lap race on bahrain without the issue showing.

This might be a coincidence of course but since nothing i did before would have this impact i am somewhat confident but take this with a grain of salt.

Basically i just disabled 4 different services ( i am on Win10 1607) which are:

Superfetch
Windows Search
Windows Image Accisition (WIA)
Windows Biometric Service

Since those services might be available and running on Win8 as well it might explain why some people have this issue on both operating systems.

If you dont know how to disable a certain service: Press WIN+R and type services.msc and there locate the services mentioned above, right click -> deactivate Let me know if that helps you.

Since Windows Search might be related to Cortanna you maybe need to disable cortanna, i just blocked it with my firewall

 kind regards
Quicksilver

Just a small update:

After 2 more Races (one after a reboot) i can pretty safely say that disabling the services i mentioned in the post above solved the issue of random freezes for me!

I really hope this helps some of you guys as well, because this would mean that CM could draw some conclusions out of that to fix the problem :-)

kind regards
Quicksilver

First test on this seems promising. I have a desktop widget for my GPU clock etc. and it had little peaks downward with the framedrops.
For now it seems to be stable around 70% on the GPU clock ingame (GTX 960). I'll test it some more this weekend.

Weird enough is when I alt-tab out the game the GPU clock goes to a constant 99-100% and when I alt-tab back in the game it goes to 60-70%  :/

There is an interesting article on TechDirt today which talks about another racing game and the problems caused by EFS. https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20160926/07583435630/racing-game-developers-sacrifice-playability-altar-anti-piracy-deliver-laggy-mess-to-paying-customers.shtml

I can confirm random stuttering and also consistent framerate drops around Singapore, Baku and the stadium section @ Mexico, running on version 1.5.1. Also, performance is down more than 50% compared to F1 2015 on the same settings.

Did you have another look at the running services?

Because when i played a race yesterday the issue was back all of a sudden, so i checked the active services and it turned out that superfetch was running again, despite being set to deactivated. After disabling it, everything was fine again, no more freezes.

Quicksilver

Xbox DVR and super fetch aren't running on my machine.
