No assists on a gamepad. Do you need to configure the controller in advanced settings?

Recommended Posts

Hey there,

So this is my first foray into the F1 series since 2011, 2016 looks like the F1 game I've been waiting for. However I don't really game as much as I did back in the day and I no longer own a wheel. Which is fine really, I've played many racing games perfectly competently on a gamepad.

What I'd like to know is, do I have to use the advanced wheel settings menu to setup the gamepad - does that work for the controller? I vaguely remember doing something similar in F1 2010 but I could be wrong. If it does, does anybody have a suggested setup?

Thing is, I like to play these games without assists and with a high AI difficulty but at the moment I'm struggling to not put the car in the wall regularly in practice in Australia.

For clarity, I'm using an XBOX 360 controller on the PC version.

Thanks!

There should be an 'assists' menu before each weekend or session and in the pause menu. I've currently got braking assist off, traction control on medium and anti lock brakes set to medium or whatever the option is and it's a good place to start. It's then a case of turning the assists off one at a time and practicing. Maybe stick to time trial so you don't have to worry about other cars until you are up to speed

you need to find a steering lineraty setting that fits you so you can be smooth as silk. It calms down the steering and has a side effect of the throttle application to be much smoother from the steering being smooth. The car setups effect the car much more allowing you to use the front and rear tow settings allowing you to be smooth and not so darty in corners like en rouge (spelling).

Linearity is definitely the issue, thank you for that. I've also switched to an XBONE controller which seems to have a little bit more room to manoeuvre on tight corners. Now I just need to figure out the sweet spot with linearity and I should be golden!

Thanks for the reply, but I'm braving it with no assists from the outset. It's the steering linearity that was throwing me off so now I'm looking for the sweet spot with that.

I will use time trial though, that's a far better idea than what I've been doing haha! Maybe turn of damage until I'm able to get round the track cleanly.

Just out of interest, what linearity are people finding works for them?

I've got it on 75 at the moment, but I'm still getting to grips with no traction/ABS so I'm miles off the pace. So it's difficult to say but it certainly feels better than 0.

70 to 75,  I don't have the game on right now to get the exact numbers but my base set up is average preset with  front and rear toe settings slider all the way to the right. On throttle diff slider is all the way to the left. The least down force on the car as possible according to track. How to get your lineraty setting you want the highest number before you feel it starts to have a delayed feel to it. I just landed on 70 to 75 but you might be different. Its based on your timing between when you move the joystick to turn the corner so everyone is different.

Thanks, i'll give that a try tomorrow.
I've only tried upto about 25 so far and still struggling so maybe that high setting will be good for me too.

certainly allows me to be smoother on corner exit oversteer.About the steering linarity,after 75 it starts to delay imput and throws off the timing for taking the corner.

I actually like that 75 number for linearity. Thanks for the tip.

I ended up putting traction control on and focusing on gearing with ABS switched off. Would have done well in Australia in the Renault but I was clipped by Alonso or Button about fifteen laps in and hit a wall hard.

Turn ten at Bahrain is killing me braking wise. I can't figure it out! Haha.

I use a controller as well with no assists. For turn 10 at Bahrain, what I do to minimise lock up is : get off the throttle, turn in a little hard initially, the car turns in, then tap the brakes and gentle release once you start rotating the car, once I'm near the apexI just manage my steering and focus on my exit.

I observed that steering and braking at the same time will certainly lead to a massive lock up so you gotta manage it and try not to do both simultaneously especially for a corner like that. Hope it helps :)

Just keep at it mate, but practice slowly at first to get accustomed to being able to control the car without assists and don't try to be too quick upfront. Speed will come as you master playing assist free as to me it's really the only way to play the game, especially if you're using the cockpit view, which IMO is what you should be using to get the thrill, to a limited degree, of what an F1 drive "sees" through their helmet vista. Just keep at it mate, it's almost like learning to walk properly.

I believe I am using 40 at the moment. I had a good setting on DiRT Rally that I may need to copy.

At the moment I only really feel the slow steering when I try to resume after a spin, or when I'm off-line through some tight hairpins at Singapore.

I always like to play sports games in the most realistic ways possible so cockpit is a must for me. I have to admit I ended up putting the assists back on. I spent about six hours trying to drive without TCS and ABS, but I couldn't get around the track once without coming off at pace. I'll probably give it another go thought. If I had a wheel and pedals I feel like I'd be better at it but I don't think I can justify the price of a decent one.
