Did you know that the long-time members of this thread have had a DiRTy Gossip Discord server for a while?

You do now 😉

Right, for those that did watch my latest video until the end, you already saw this but for those that didn't, here's a little bit of gossip which includes the DiRT Rally franchise.

So earlier this week, there was an article concerning some information about the 2017 VW Polo WRC being part of a future game. >>> Link <<<

"According to a good source from VW Motorsport, we have learned that the 2017 VW Polo R WRC and its livery will be in a game."

Now, there are multiple possibilities as to which game that will or could be.

1. It could be the car that will come with the free November patch. (likely)
2. It could be a car which will feature in KT Racing's final WRC franchise game, WRC11. (questionable)
3. It could be a car which will feature in a possible DiRT Rally 3 which I'm still hopeful to see released in late Spring/early Summer 2022. (uncertain/speculative)

Having it in a hypothetical DR3 game would be entirely possible.
The car doesn't fall under the WRC license which Codemaster only obtains for five years in 2023 because the car was never homologated, even though VW did fully develop it.
This means that it can be licensed separately by Codemaster for example from VW or VW Motorsport themselves and added to a 2022 DiRT Rally game.

Thoughts? Concerns?

It would be absolutely fantastic the hypothetical DR3 would have this car in its line-up! I mean, many people wanted to have current gen WRC cars in DR2.0... This is a way of achieving that.
And it gives them an opportunity to discover how the current gen WRC cars with their massive aero packages work and how they can implement them into a game.
I know the next generation WRC cars has a lot less aerodynamic features but still...

Fricking finally some gossip. I’ve been really looking forward to this. My brain tells me it will go to Kyllotton WRC10, but my heart hopes it will be in DR3. One more thing: VW has been on the cover of the two previous DiRT Rally games. First Polo R WRC, then Polo R5. There isn’t a new rally Volskwagen coming, could the Polo WRC17 be on the cover?

WRC game seems to be a late '23 or early '24 release, that would make the gap since DR2 about 6 years, so something has to be soon i hope - however, soonest i think would be an announce early next year (2022) with a release ~6 months later.  Unless they've split teams or massively increased the team, the split seems off, that would make the WRC game 2 years later at most.

What was the WRC license wording again? what year WRC are they going to have the license for?

Stupid forum pages, didn't see this page when i replied....

Anyway, the VW stuff, yeah, i can see it being possible - but it's also got me thinking about the reason codies can't/don't license *current* WRC cars.  Remember they could license the 2010 cars because they were out of spec for what WRC was running, same for R5 cars.  I think no 2010's WRC cars in DR2 because the current R5's they were allowed to have were as fast if not faster than them.

Anyway, my question is, depending if the licensing/rights stayed the same or not, aren't the 2017 spec cars now going to be done/finished as of 2022? end of an era (licensing-wise)

That's an interesting question you've raised there. I don't know what happens to the 2017 - 2021 spec WRC cars license-wise. It might well be that they no longer fall under the license as they won't be running in any official WRC championship.

You also asked about the length of the Codemasters' ownership of the WRC license. If I remember correctly, it's a 5-year deal starting with the 2023 season.

Wooo! Some actual dirtty gossip. This news go me off the triples and back into the rally machine!

As they are still "World Rally Cars" there might still be some issue there.

The 2000cc class was pretty patchy in DR2.0; was that because of the cost of licensing cars from this era, or the difficulty in using WRCars?

Notably none of the 1600cc WRCars made it to DR2.0 either, but the early ones weren't current at that time. Again I think you have to assume licensing was a factor.

The 2017 Polo is an interesting anomaly, as you could simply class it as a "rally prototype" or something like that.

NB: As an aside, I thought VW Motorsport had closed its doors. Interesting that the information is from a "...good source at VW Motorsport".

I meant, what year is the license effective from, ie. what year are they covering?  I ask because i remember the wording of it being slightly odd, like they get it in x year effective for y year or something.

So 2000 class was spendy, licensing, sponsors, sound recordings etc.  But remember DR had 2010's class, the 1600cc WRC cars - it was a mad spread so not well matched, but they were no longer current cars, hence why they had them (as i understand it)

None of the 1600cc WRC cars made it to DR2 per the info i wrote, it was related to speed of the current spec R5's being faster and that the 1600cc 2010's class was horribly spread out.  Made more sense to have all the current spec R5 cars for the money.

The 2017 Polo WRC is an absolute anomaly, you're right.  It's alright saying it could be in DR3 but in what class? against what?  Unless you can put it in a class, it's highly unlikely to happen, an odd car on it's own, what would it compete with?  unless it turns out they *can* get the '17-'21 WRC cars because they're no longer current WRC class cars, in the same way that the 1600cc era cars became "available" for DR.

Still, i'd love this to be a thing, but i think Sim has it right, the most likely outcome is it's the next surprise car in WRC10.

I'm still curious on the VW Motorsport part though, i don't recall what the exact outcome of the VAG's motorsport programs in the end, i thought some things were planned, then plans changed?

VW Motorsport initially announced that they would no longer be involved in internal combustion engine motorsport and would be concentrating on electric racing projects only.

That was followed by another announcement that VW would no longer be involved in motorsport at all and that they were closing the doors of VW Motorsport. Sure the articles I read at the time said that everyone involved would be reassigned roles elsewhere in VW.

I think that second announcement was about a year ago now, that is why I am surprised by any quote from someone "at VW Motorsport" as I thought they'd have finished moving everyone elsewhere.

Combining pronunciations of different languages sounds even stranger, in my opinion. It felt really odd to pronounce the names of the stages in Dutch whilst continue speaking English otherwise. 😅

Besides, I find it difficult to switch from my (hopefully somewhat) English pronunciation back to my native pronunciation when I say any Italian name while speaking in English

My life basically revolves around the British Isles, the British English language and I'm constantly communicating with Brits. As an English and history teacher, or former teacher as I lost my job a while back and haven't been able to bounce back yet, I'm constantly reading books, doing research online and watching documentaries about the fascinating history of the British Isles. And 9 out of 10 times when I grab my tent and backpack, I'm leaving to explore the fantastic countryside.

I've already decided to move there once I'm retired. Not sure where exactly but I've lost my heart to the Scottish Highlands a while back as I felt like I was home when I was travelling there for a few weeks. 😅

Good luck with your bounce back!

Heh, I want to visit the Highlands ever since I've seen Skyfall so it has been quite a while... and The Grand Tour episode has only confirmed my desire😅

Thanks, mate. Slow but steady I'll eventually get there. It just takes time as a lot has happened the past two years which has taken a serious toll on my mental health. However, I'm not for quiting so I keep pushing back or climbing up. Designing liveries for DR2.0 and creating content for my YT channel gives me a purpose. I can't express how much these have helped me.

I went to a few places in Scotland and particularly loved camping and hiking around Loch Lomond for two weeks. Unfortunately, due to multiple ankle/lower leg injuries playing football I'm no longer able to hike for more than a few miles. But I'll be visiting a specialist next week who can hopefully tell me what needs to be done in order to get it sorted out once and for all. I don't want to give up on serious hiking holidays.

You know what they say...

That doesn't surprise me in the slightest! They were hoping to get that out of the way so they could concentrate on a PS5 remaster of The Witcher 3, but that never materialised. Just be thankful they weren't put in charge of the DiRT franchise.

Who builds\supports the R5?

I'm fairly certain VW Motorsport only exists now to serve the customer cars with spare parts, and once the Rally 2 and the TCR cars have been retired that's it.

Yeah, they not build new cars anymore. Also at one point you could shift/sell the production license/drawing/etc to an other company.
You see that more often with older spec cars. I think that happened for example with the Lancer WRC05. That went to Ralliart europe, than to MML and is now MMR.
But for example with the Pajero dakar (went to JMB i think), Corolla WRC (Wevers Sport), etc.

Nothing is, really.

You either drive a Stratos or an M3, or you lose.
