PS4 outselling the Xbox One 3-to-1 as total sales gap grows to 9 million vs. 5 million ...

Recommended Posts

According to its latest sales figures, Sony’s consoles outsold Microsoft’s consoles three-to-one in the quarter ending June 30. During its quarterly earnings call yesterday, Sony said that it had sold a combined total of 3.5 million units of the PS4 and PS3, compared to Microsoft’s quarterly figure of just 1.1 million Xbox One and Xbox 360 consoles. Neither Sony or Microsoft opted to break down these numbers into per-console sales figures, but using previous announcements as a baseline it’s probably around 70-30 in favor of the PS4 and Xbox One. In short, this means Sony sold around 2.5 million PS4s last quarter, compared to about 800,000 Xbox Ones. This equates to some very unfavorable total global sales figures for the Xbox One, which we’ll discuss below.

Earlier in the week, Sony surprised everyone by announcing that it had actually made a profit [PDF] during the April-June quarter. This is mostly due to restructuring and selling off assets — Sony has spun off its TV business into a separate subsidiary, sold its PC business, and sold its shares in Square Enix — but strong sales of the PS4 definitely helped matters along. While Sony gave us a combined total of 3.5 million PS4s and PS3s sold during the quarter, the last exact PS4 sales figure (7 million) was way back in April. By our estimations, the PS4 is probably sitting at around 9 million consoles sold globally.

Microsoft also used its quarterly earnings call to announce that it had shipped 1.1 million combined units of the Xbox One and Xbox 360 in the April-June quarter. Note that Sony announced sold units, while Microsoft stuck with shipped units (which means consoles might be sitting on retailer shelves). It’s getting a little bit farcical by this point, but Microsoft hasn’t actually given us an exact Xbox One sales figure since the end of 2013 (3 million). Our estimates put the Xbox One, globally, at around 5 million sold units.

Of course, it’s important to note that the $400 Kinect-free Xbox One was only available for three weeks at the end of the April-June quarter — and Microsoft says Xbox One sales doubled during that period. Sony would appear to be smashing Microsoft to pieces at the moment, but the sales figures could be a lot closer by the end of the next quarter. Even if Microsoft does make up some ground, though, the PS4 shows no sign of slowing down — and with an installed base that’s now almost twice as large as the Xbox One (9 million vs. 5 million), I fear the damage has already been done.

so it aint looking good for next gen devs  is it ...

Not sure how it makes your day lol. It doesn't really matter how much they've sold as long as you're happy with the platform of choice. Both the Consoles are good imo, M$ were always going to sell less when the PS4 is cheaper and the X1 had a load of bad press before release.

This.

For me it's about personal preference. I liked my 360, and I really like my X1. I've played on friends PS4's, and yea, it's also a very good console, it just doesn't work for me is all. Plus the exclusives on Xbox One interest me more than the ones on PS4 do. The Last of Us is the only Playstation exclusive I'd actually want.

Plus I way prefer the Xbox controller over the DS4 :p Every time a game pops up saying press X on the PS4, I'd press square. And my left thumb constantly gravitated to the spot where the Xbox controllers left thumb stick is.

I'll probably get a PS4 one day, but right now my Xbox One does everything I want from a console and more.

Sorry , I was being sarcastic. The thread is meaningless imo and that was the point I'm trying to make. I couldn't care less about it because you said as long as I'm happy with the my platform it doesn't matter. Hard to show sarcasm on the internet you know ?  :p

I don't have either but I'm leaning towards a PS4 in the hope they might make the G27 compatible , but all my friends will will be on Xbox so it's 50/50.  The better wheel compatibility on the PS4 is a bonus too.

I agree I'm mainly switching over to X box because I like what X box are offering more this time in terms of games. I'm moer used to their controller to as I have one for my PC which Iuse for playing gsames like Fifa. I don't think there is much between  them in reality but for me I'm liking the games moer this time on the XB1 and seeing as neither is backwards compatible. I would still need my PS3 even if I  got the PS4. If the PS had remained backwards compatible I'd have probably stayed with Playstation. I'm just liking the Xbox options moer than Playstations

Am I allowed to point out that the Wii U is outselling the Xbox One currently, even after the Mario Kart 8 hype has faded? :3

(As in, the Wii U has outsold the Xbox One in the past 2 weeks, and has been close the 3 weeks before)

playstation has always been more poplular than xbox just look at the total amount of consoles sold by each manufacturer. i remember when ps3 was released it was the same it just takes time to catch up with the games

Xbox 360 outsold PS3 for a significant amount of time. It was only at the end of the lifecycle did PS3 start to catch up.

I don't really care which is more "successful" there are enough people on each console.

neither do I really. I take what each console is offering and decide based on which one offers me more of what I like prior to now it's been the PS plus all the 3 pervious consoles were backwatrds compatible so made sense to stick with it. This time around it's the XB1 because I like what their offering. Given I've never played any of the Halo's other than 1 and 2 on PC I'm really looking forward to playing the Master Chief Colllection when it's released in November. I've always wanted to play it but being on the PS up until now I've not been able too.

i always try to get both consoles as there are exclusive games on both that i like, but i decided to get ps4 first because of what microsoft said about it, better machine and cheaper, i was pretty shocked when they stood up and said "we have to hand it to sony they have built a better machine at a cheaper price" good enough for me

I don't have the room for both unfortunately and probably not the money either. As I have a PC as well in fact I may have to unplug my PS3 to make room for the XB1 I don't plan on selling it but I will need to make room on my desk for it somehow. I've got 2 places it can go in mind but I need to discuss that with mum as I'll need help setting it up.

im not specifically talking about ps3 i did say "playstation" and should have clarified i meant them all.. on vgchartz they give you hardware charts and i aint ever seen playstion sell less than xbox :)

You did actually specifically talk about PS3. From your post above:

"i remember when ps3 was released it was the same it just takes time to catch up with the games"

It wasn't the same with PS3 though. Sony arrogant about the success of PS2 (rightly so) and overpriced the PS3. Microsoft came in with the cheaper 360 and stole the sales at the start of the last-gen era of consoles. Sony eventually caught up in the past couple of years but right at the beginning it was Microsoft's market. Ironically the exact reverse has happened with this era, with Sony learning from it's mistakes and Microsoft acting in a similar manner to how Sony did with the PS3.

I don't believe VGChartz is the most accurate of sites as they don't include some online sales. This page however shows a good breakdown of sales and lots of charts... http://vgsales.wikia.com/wiki/NPD_Seventh_generation

The only reason I like Xbox is #1 I like the controller better. #2 I love Halo #3 All my friends have xbox's. The actual system isn't as good as the playstation

Yeah I generally prefer the XB controller as well I even bought an XB type controller for my PS3. Because of my disability I'm limited to only being able to use one hand properly. So stretching from say the D-pad to the circle button on the PS3 to shoot in Fifa is quite hard. I'm not saying I can't do it because  I can but stretching over the 2 analogue sticks can at times be awkward. Fortunately the D-pad being lower on the XB pad means I only need to negotiate 1 which is much easier. So pretty much the layout of the XB controller suits me more.
