Next Locations Speculation - Best minimal location-selection

Recommended Posts

There will be a new game. And I think we agree it will probably feature rally-simulation again (Hopefully a DR2)
So I wondered, considering that development-resources are limited, what minimal selection of rallies would be the most "covering" in terms of diversity?

Lets assume for a moment, that with an engine-swap (game-engine) they can reuse limited to zero assets from current locations. Then, what do we need? The scenery can be nice, but what matters are the driving challenges a location can offer. Therefor surface is important first: We need gravel, tarmac and snow. The big three. Maybe further added by sand, ice and general wet (tarmac and gravel).
For selection I would only consider rallies which are/were featured in an international rally-series (I will focus on WRC/ERC, simply because I don't know enough of the other int. series)
Lets get started,
SNOW: Sweden and Norway. Sweden is more known, Norway seems more difficult to drive, so norway it is.
TARMAC: Monte Carlo is obviously most diverse here, with dry, wet and icy conditions. For pure fast tarmac we have Germany, Corsica or China.

Next I would pick Finland: Fast Gravel, but more demanding than similar Poland.
Then I would go for Wales: Often Wet, light Gravel. Similar to New Zealand but more challenging (although less beautiful)
For Sandy Gravel I propose Australia, more "current" than Safari and semi-confirmed, since CM made a Trip there.
Heavy dry Gravel is currently Greece, but I would ditch Greece for Argentina: very technical at places and water fords and fast bits in between. Argentina therefor is the best minimum for the collection of heavy gravel/little sand (Greece, Portugal, Mexico, Argentina, Sardegna)

For tarmac, Germany beats Corsica, since the Moselland Parts are the same flavour, plus the fast Panzerplatte parts. Don't know how China would've looked, so picking Germany under the possibility, that China could become the better allround-tarmac-rally in the future.

Only one thing missing. A mixed stage. Well, you could count Monte as mixed, but going from dry tarmac to loose gravel is a different and unique challenge.
For this everybody will now think, yeah Spain right? No, I propose a mixed rally that's a lot lot better: Azores Rally (an ERC event), with it's spectacular Crater-stage (which is mixed)

That leaves me with my current best minimal selection of:

Australia
Monte Carlo
Norway
Azores
Germany
Wales
Argentina

That, I think, would give most diversity with least Trips/Modelling/Researching needed (assuming no assets can be reused. Otherwise the list would change)

Thoughts on my selection?
Anyone with knowledge of other int. series who can suggest a Rally that fulfills a role better than one mentioned here or has an additional completely different driving challenge?

Cheers

Edit:
Here is an impression of that crater stage I was talking about:

I'd go for Sweden over Norway simply because Sweden is more of an iconic rally location. And it has many stages that are in Norway anyways :-)

That crater stage would be pretty awesome to have in game!

Would be cool to have the current locations but both long stages joined together for longer 20-30 km stages, since the new engine could support that (obviously :D). I wouldn't want for those tracks to go to waste.

As for new stuff, I'd love to see something from my country (Latvia) like Rally Liepāja, it's part of the FIA ERC, it's a gravel or snow rally (depending on the season when it takes place, last year it was moved from february to september), with a city stage as well.
Actually, it would be interesting to have some city stages in DiRT.

I might get back to this with my own hopes, but I hope they stay away from the general WRC rounds. I feel like many of them has been done to death appearing in pretty much every rally game in existance (I'm talking countries, not actual stages), and there are so many cool and uniqe rallies that should be in.

I think youre in the minority here. A lot of  Rally enthusiast depict the WRC and their rallies as the top of the sport. So some classics should be in to keep the heritage alive and mix it up with some more unknown ones.
I actually don't like that 6 of my proposed rallies are/were WRC events (4 of 7 would be better with 3 being non WRC like Azores),  but apart from the ERC I don't know other really good rallies. I would even happily switch out Germany, although it's my own country, if there would be a more diverse and interesting tarmac event. Do you know any from other continents?

But WRC rallies I would keep for the heritage would be Monte Carlo and Wales.

I know it'll probably never happen, but I want Lake Superior Performance Rally, in the fall like it should be, with the proper wet and slippery surface. USA rally stages are quite a bit different that the normal stuff that ends up in rally games, they feel a bit 'smaller scale' if that makes sense. Maybe they would be good for a rally school-style training area.

I'm hoping for 10-12 locations...To have some diversity...and as far as custom events in the career mode being able to choose what rally we want to run.

I think, there has to be 14 locations in te next game. You can put all the stages from Dirt Rally and add new to the 6 locations. To that I`d have one or two more tarmac rallies and new gravel locations (Australia, Portuagal [WRC], Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Malaysia) and one rally in a desert like Abu Dhabi, Jordan or Qatar. To that I``m hopeful we can see a second winter rally. Maybe in Japan, Norway or Canada?

My top 14.
1. Monte-Carlo (tarmac/snow/ice)
2. Sweden (snow/ice)
3. Norway (snow/ice)
4. Portugal (gravel)
5. Greece  (gravel)
6. Poland  (gravel)
7. Finland  (gravel)
8. Germany (tarmac)
9. China (tarmac)
10. France//Ireland/Belgium (Ypers Rally) (tarmac)
11. Japan (gravel)
12. Abu Dhabi/Qatar/Jordan (gravel)
13. Wales (gravel)
14. Australia (gravel)

I think you missed the point. Of course we all want to have many many rallies to have lots of variety.

The question I'm asking though is, with what 'minimal' selection of locations the dev team would achieve the most diversity.
Kind of like a bang-for-your-buck question: If they would be limited to a maximum number of  rallies they can include in time, which would be the best choices here.

And in that case there is no reason to waste dev-ressources on Sweden AND Norway; or on Portugal AND Greece.

If ressources and time wern't an issue, we would of course want all the rallies there are on the planet. But for that I think we have a wishlist thread already. So what would be your selection if you could only pick a limited number?

I would like to see a Safari Rally?

It may return to the WRC in 2019 and seeing as  Colin Mcrae was the last winner and also was his last WRC win it would be quite cool.

The long stages would be quite a challenge with some sections having to be taken at a crawl, the scenery fantastic too.

As Dirt Rally is quality over quantity I would be happy if it was this alone, still playing and enjoying the tracks we have so far :-)

Hopefully we can expect longer stages...I would love to have longer stages and more stages...hopefully with a new game engine (not yet announced) they will be willing to add to it and we can get some dlc locations down the road.  As long as we dont get gouged on pricing.

l Agree with you, with the addition of the safari rally, crossing some looong water splashes plenty of mud with 2017 cars, just imagine, I wouldnt choose between Poland and NZ, I want both more than Australia (I think we Will have Australia in next game).

I'd say, rather than including locations, they should put in places as fully fledged rallies (e.g. instead of "Sweden" or "Wales", it should be "Rally Sweden" and "Wales Rally GB").
