I might have an obsession with Evos...

Jean-Pierre Nicolas, Peugeot 504, Safari 1976

Nicolas again, Peugeot 504 V6, Rally Bandama 1978

And Nicolas again, Porsche 911, Monte Carlo 1978. I know this is one day late, but I can't believe we left this one out. Classic car, classic performance.

Forgive the nostalgia. Drawing # 1 was considered bad luck for the Safari, and it usually proved true, except for a rare few. Joginder and Jaswant Singh would start first off the ramp in the 1965 Safari, going on to win by some margin, driving a Volvo PV 544.

Shekhar Mehta would emulate the feat no less than three times, out of his five total wins. The first in 1973, navigated by Lofty Drews, in a Datsun 240Z,

the second in 1980, navigated by Mike Doughty, in a Datsun 160J

and the third in 1982, again navigated by Mike Doughty, in the Nissan Violet GT. Something about those Datsuns I guess.

Juha Kankkunen would also pull it off in the 1993 Safari, driving a Celica ST185, but that shot has already been inadvertently posted here, three days ago! I'll replace him with Björn Waldegård, who would do it in the 2007 Classic Safari, with a Ford Escort Mk 1.

A small tribute to #1 - the first of the flying Finns, Timo Mäkinen. RAC 74 and 75. He won both events.

It is on his wikipedia but I can't find the interview where he said that.
I'll keep on searching.

The fiesta time is coming soon to an end. It's been fun. Here is some other cool nr.1 cars

Henning Solberg. Rally Norway 2006 (Candidate rally)

And here is Petter Solberg in Rally japan 2004

This is probably one of my favorite Solberg wins, considering what happened the previous round.
