Safety Car Causes - Confirmation and Mitigations

Recommended Posts

Ok not sure if this should set in Tech or GD, so move if I have it wrong.

I am not seeking to reopen debates about the SC bugs and whether they will be fixed, or why they have not been etc. Just looking to see if there is anyway we can improve the league I am in using better understanding or tweaks to settings.

Specifically the issue we have is that using sim damage and 50% Races, we get at least one SC every race and in around 80% of races, we get 2 SC. We are clearly not brilliant racers, but the standard is decent enough.

I am looking to understand what causes safety cars (aside from the obvious) and whether any settings / actions by players can help lower the occurrences.

Specifically 3 questions I suppose:

1) Does the timing of drivers leaving the session (after retiring / crashing out) have any bearing on whether an SC is triggered? I have seen it mentioned in at least one thread (I trawled the first 15 pages of the forum before posting this) but cannot see it confirmed. If so, what is the best way to mitigate this?

2) Does the AI difficulty level setting have any impact on the likelihood of an SC being triggered? We race with a full grid so never have AI drivers, meaning this setting only really kicks in if we have d/c (which is very rare) so we can adjust it freely.

3) Are there any other tips on how to avoid SC being triggered?

On a somewhat related note, does the AI difficulty setting impact the SC delta at all, or does lowering it reduce the chances of anyone getting "falling too far behind" penalties whilst behind the SC, or is that also a myth?

Thanks

1) As far as I know the timing of when you leave after your retirement doesn't influence it but I don't have any evidence about that so it's just speculation. You can actually test this if you have the time with a couple of guys. We don't allow people to leave so it's not so common with us, however, even with that, we've still seen it happen so the rate is quite high (not above 50% or at least I don't think so, but it's just higher than I thought it would have been).

2) We don't use AI either so can't tell. We should first try to understand what causes the SC after leaving after retiring but we would need some more info about that first.

3) Any yellow flag and any leaving after retirement can cause a SC from what we can tell, that's as much as I can help you with.

Your last question is actually quite interesting because I can find a logic reason for both ways... Should also be fairly easily tested with a couple of guys again :)

Thanks for that, sounds like we should try and ask people not to leave the session at all.

Testing the last part is not as easy as it sounds. Firstly you need a few guys, you need to guarantee an SC (which of course never happen when you want them!) and then you have to try and judge at what point the "falling to far back" messages kick in.

Would be far easier for someone to just confirm what the game code does :

Speaking of the safety car I have a question. Are you allowed to pit to replace tires while the SC is out without incurring a penalty? If so, is it a risky move in your opinion?
