Recommended Posts

Id take a proper Mk2 (yes with twin Webers) and if we had the option of fitting an RS2000 nosecone I wouldnt be upset.

I clicked on this thread to offer further support. However I am now immediately turning around and leaving. I'm not angry with what I've read @Jepsertti, just disappointed.

Oh c'mon @Busterbvi, we know this is you ;)

Ha ha, not guilty bogani but happy to join the campaign ! For Millington fans, the sound files are available at RaceDepartment, I have them installed in my DR Mk2, not bad but nowhere near as awesome  as a BDA / BDG on Webbers. I can confirm that the sound files in the DR Mk2 come from a 1960's Datsun roadster :#  !! ( confirmed by @soundfx )

Agree with you thescousestig, that hideous roof scoop and oversize wheels makes it look like a frickin ice cream van crop sprayer !  I think @KickUp is with me on this but needs to convince others, I have offered to send a bulk order of biscuits for all concerned. No doubt you all saw my comments about it in the Dirty Gossip thread so I don't need to re hash my thoughts on it here. I suggested a compromise by doing a make over on the current car with a list of stuff to put right, at least to make it look and sound like a works Group 4 Escort Mk2. It is a real tragedy that the most iconic car of all time that is still winning rallies all over the world to this day has been overlooked like this. It more than deserves its rightful place in D4. How much work can it be... really !!

I would really appreciate it if members that share my view on a proper Group 4 Mk2 would join in my campaign, Clj9, where are you !

Ok. I don't wanna be that guy, but please stop calling the Webbers. They are called Webers.

;)
A connoisseur of Mk2 Escorts, spelling Webers wrong??   Wat??
haha maybe hes not a spelling nazi but just enjoys great car sounds.dont get why so many get thier nuts in a twist over gramma if you know what they mean and its relevant thats all that matters.(yes i gave errors on pirpose :D)

Spelling never bothers me, but for him to be so persistent on having such exacting requests for Mk2 detail & authenticity, I (and probably @bogani , who actually pulled him on the spelling) just found it extra-humorous!  :D

I'm no grammar nazi. However, if someone continously writes McRea instead of McRae I feel obliged to correct him at some point.

Thanks to the OP for starting a great thread on my favorite topic, I was looking forward to more constructive input from the very fortunate few that have actually seen, heard and enjoyed real Group 4 Escorts in action on the stages, shame it has been derailed onto a grammar debate,  can we stay on topic please ?

An excerpt from Graham Robson's great book on the RS1800.  Says it all really !

"Escort RS1800 (Escort Mk II) : This is a Rally Giant because it was consistently the fastest, the most successful and the most versatile car in the second half of the 1970s and early 80's. Developed from the Mk I, it was a conventional front engine/rear drive machine, which rallied with 2-litre engines of up to 270bhp. Rally successes were legendary - British (RAC), Safari, Acropolis, Finland (1000 Lakes), Sweden, Portugal, Canada - and more and more. They won 17 World Rallies between 1975 and 1981. RS1800s won the World Makes Championship in 1979, and were always close to victory, and always competitive. Escort drivers like Bjorn Waldegard (1979) and Ari Vatanen (1981) won the World Drivers' Championships. Over the years hundreds - and this is no exaggeration hundreds of RS1800s were built for motor sport, and were the ideal car for almost any condition in the world because they were very powerful, but simple and rugged. The RS1800 was also the layout template which was copied by other manufacturers - for cars like the Talbot Sunbeam-Lotus, the Vauxhall Chevette HSR and the Nissan GTs of the late 1970s/early 1980s, which were really all Escort 'clones'. Ford claim, and they may be right, that RS1800s have won more rallies, at World, International and National level than any other car in the world."

How right they are and its still winning rallies all over the world today. Codies need to single out the RS1800 for special treatment and pay tribute to this "Rally Giant" and give us a proper Boreham works or Sutton Group 4 RS1800. It more than deserves its rightful place in DiRT 4.

Ultimately, this thread will result in little or no change to the Escorts in DiRT4.  If I am wrong on that, it'll be that we have both the current car and what was Colin's 'Open' class car from Dirt3.

'On topic' wont matter much really...

Agree 100%, if they are going to have period cars in a game it needs to be done with integrity, although I can see where they are coming from with the MK 2 in the game, maybe modeling a live axle is the problem?

I would also like to see a MK1 pushrod on twin Dellortos.

Suspension geometry should be more accurate in D4 according to Paul.

The current DR car and Colin's car from D3 is the same car, it was a port over !

Yes, but D3 has 2 different power outputs of the same model.  Colins own "Open class" Carbon Fibre, Sequential, 300+bhp car, and a slower Historic version, which unfortunately shared exactly the same visual model.

The port to D:R is the visually incorrect Colin car, but features in a Historic class with 2 litre Pinto performance

As a retired Rolls Royce / Bentley, Ferrari, Lotus and Aston Martin Technician who campaigned a Mk2 all over Wales in the late 70's and early 80's I have an exacting eye for detail, quality and authenticity and yes, my standards are extremely high with a huge dollop of nostalgia in there as well and I make no apologies for it. An iconic giant of the rallying world like the RS1800 should be modeled with respect and integrity.

I agree, a correct MK2 would be awesome but this is just starting to get silly. Codies has to, codies need to.. no they don't.

In the same way as the Star Wars prequels were an improvement and the new Mini looks better than the original ones?!?!

While I think the Mk1 is a prettier looking car, I prefer the Mk2. A woman at work, her husband has a Mk1 in a metallic darkish purple colour, its absolutely gorgeous. Perfect condition since hes a bodywork repair and touch-up guy. If I had a picture I would share!

I certainly wouldn't say no to a Mk.1, but I prefer the look of the Mk.2, especially with the Group 4 arches. One of the engineers I work with is a classic Ford nut: we often have a back-and-forth as to which shape of Escort is better!

Notably Colin McRae opted for a Mk.2 over a Mk.1, so it's pretty clear he had good taste as well.
