GTX 1080 is a mid tier entry level Graphic card, really?

Recommended Posts

So the tier level is baffling, but I'll make my point clear with the chip history. Indeed, the 1060 is a perfectly capable gaming graphic card & yes the 1070 is quite powerful. The thing is based on Nvidia chip history with the legacy & all, they aren't really where you think they are.

Way back, the Nvidia 8800GT was very popular & it was indeed a high end card back in the day. It was priced around 200$ to 250$US. Anyone with a 8600GT(100~150$) would be flagged as mainstream(mid tier) graphic card. Obviously you had the 8300GS(~50$) that feel very low end with only 8 stream processor.

That his based on Nvidia GPU history chip codename, They are correct & you can look up at techpowerup database.

Low end:
G86> 8300GS, 8400GS
G96> 9400GT, 9500GT
GF106> GT440, GTS450
GF116> GT545, GTX550Ti
GK106> GT645, GT650Ti, GTX660
GM107> GTX745, GTX750, GTX750 Ti
GM206> GTX950, GTX960
GP106> GTX1060

Mid Tier:
G84>8500, 8600(GT, GTS, etc..)
G94> 9600(GT, GS, etc), GT220
GT200-100,105> GTX260. GTX275
GF104> GTX460 SE, GTX460,
GF114> GTX555, GTX560 SE, GTX560, GTX560Ti
GK104> GTX670, GTX 680, GTX 690(note: dual mid end)
GK104> GTX760, GTX760 Ti, GTX770
GM204> GTX970, GTX980
GP104> GTX1070, GTX1080

High End:
G80, G92> 8800(GS, GT, GTX, Ultra, etc)
G92> 9800(GS, GT, etc), GT250
GT200-300,350, 400> GTX280, GTX285, GTX295
GF100> GTX465, GTX470, GTX480
GF110> GTX560Ti(448), GTX570. GTX580, GTX590
GK110> GTX780, GTX780Ti, Titan, Titan Black, Titan Z(DUAL HIGH END)
GM200> GTX980Ti, Titan X
GP102> 1080Ti, Titan X Pascal

I just want to clear up thing.

Some may point out to say, what point of this thread?... I'll state the obvious one. There's a large disparity of performance between tier & this didn't change thorough history. There's nothing about Ti owner being salty or anyone being snub or anything. It's simply a following of the chip codename. You will likely pay premium from the best chip from the tier & the lower quality from the upper tier will be slightly more expensive with a massive disparity of performance increase & also more with overclocking headroom.

So you'll likely see a good 30% of performance between tier from the same series.

There's a PC thread already. Also this is nothing new from Nvidia. Everyone that bought a 1080 knew it would be the 3rd best in the range, just like I did when buying  a 780 and 980. It's not mid-tier though. Most can't afford a Titan, so that's enthusiast level. The ti and 80 are high end level, 70 is mid tier and 60 and bellow are low end tier.

Prices for most things in life are priced higher due to inflation, taxes, wages and currency.  Anybody getting bummed when a faster card comes out isn't doing it right. When I buy a GPU I look at its performance alone and weather it's worth it. What you're stating isn't something new starting with the 1080.

Here an article being salty about it in 2012.

http://www.techradar.com/news/computing-components/graphics-cards/is-nvidia-s-geforce-gtx-680-an-imposter-1074235
"So, here's the bottom line. The GTX 680 is not a high end GPU. But it's being sold for the price of a high end GPU and that very likely makes it hugely profitable."

On the other hand the 780 herited from the GK110 which is actually an high end GPU along with the 780Ti & Titan with small performance disparity. After it went back to the GM204 again for the with the mid tier chip for the 970 & 980. With pascal, same trend...
