Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees Codemasters finally implemented Borderless Window into any of their games, and its DiRT 4, yeeeeeeeeeees!
Sadly, it brings down framerate to a crawl
No difference to my frames, fortunately. Somehow been lucky with that. Well, it helps that both Borderless and Fullscreen stutter the same amount, because FX 8350.

Somehow missed your post by 6 days :D

But yeah, due to stutter i got a chance to familiarize with Gamer mode and it feels... kinda retro, something like DiRT 1/CMR2005 levels of retro. It is very fun. D:
I have an 8350 and it runs fine...
Yeah, its weird why DiRT 4 stutters and Dirt Rally doesn't (eventually stopped). Can't use newest driver for my R9 280X for now because a different game i play loses half its frame rate with it.

Probably another case of #AyyyMD from my GPU or this DDR3 RAM kit being suspicious, but can't exactly change it at the moment due to buying this entire rug used, not via a store. (and lack of cash)

I've played it that much that I managed to break my brand new Fanatec PS4 CSL elite wheel.
Wow, seriously? I was really thinking about getting one of those...
Nothing serious, the 4 way directional switch threw a wobbly and wasn't working on all directions. A bit of twiddling and pulling appears to have repaired it for now but it seems a very wimpy switch and I've heard of another person having the same problem. As for the wheel itself the ffb is streets ahead of the T300 as long as one of the settings is changed
Hmm, all of my Fanatec stuff so far has had zero issues at all. I'll be disappointed if the switches go out.
Although the d key on my keyboards feeling mushy, think there's something stuck under it.

You could go even faster using left-foot braking ;)

The Audi Quattro is freakin' awesome! And also pretty hilarious that I am getting sponsor bonuses, even though I can't change the livery on that car.

But it drives so damn well. It's scary, but it drives well.

There was a stage last night - Australia, wet roads, clear skies, sunset... Absolutely awesome.
Such a great atmosphere about the stage that took me right back to the feeling I got driving New Zealand stages in CMR.
Well done team.

Despite the criticism, I wanted to dig up this thread because I still and will have lots of fun in D4.

The reason you see lots of passionate criticism here, just shows how much the people care for D4, at least I think so.
Games like WRC or SLRE do no have such a passionate community with criticis. And for sure, it's not because they are flawless...

DiRT games are the benchmark for rally games when it comes to sounds. Watching videos of both aforementioned games makes me cringe just because of their sounds. And D4 does a lot of other things better too.

Yourstage is really innovative, even though it can not compete with the organic look and feel of handmade stages from the real world - yet. But I do like this feature a lot!

We can only hope that D4 is a big enough financial success, so that we will see a successor.

Yeah, I think a lot of the high emotion around here is borne of frustration that various things didn't live up to (sometimes unrealistic) expectation.

I'm certainly still enjoying the game, and remain hopeful that Codemasters can address some of the concerns the community has raised. My main hope is that in doing so they'll reinvigorate the game and make it more popular with the sim community, but it seems pleasing these folks is no easy task; they are very, er, particular.

Loving the game myself, yes there are a few quirky things, and would be nice to get abit more input from the devs, but overall it is fun for me. Hoping the club/leauge system works great.

Well like I said before, I like everything about the game, except the lack of locations and the repetitiveness of the rally stages.

I won't ever hide my opinion that Dirt's 2 and 3 (and Showdown) are truly horrific games, so my expectation levels of Dirt 4 were pretty much zero when I finally decided to purchase the game (albeit incredibly cheaply) that I vowed never to play - with the plan being to firmly dislike this game for a few hours, complain loudly how Codemasters have completely forgotten to make good games and promptly sell it on to some other unsuspecting person.

Well, 50 hours and 2 minutes later i'm very disappointed to report that i'm still playing the game with no immediate intentions of either getting rid of it or complaining bitterly to Codemasters about how I've just wasted £24 and xx hours of my life on yet another trashy Dirt game - instead choosing offer reasons as to why Dirt 4 warrants 50 hours of my life and is a worthy purchase to anyone who doesn't already own it

First and foremost Career mode. Any given career mode in any given game normally focuses on different vehicles racing around the same old tracks over and over again - a format that, erm, pretty much all of the time is tedious and boring. With Dirt 4 Codemasters have utilised the random track generator perfectly and although there are only five locations they've managed to make each stage feel different enough to actually make the journey thru career mode one of not just setting the difficulty to easy and going though the motions but one that is actually quite enjoyable and warrants some form of completion. So yeah, the singlemost reason why I still own this game.

Sure, five locations is woefully lacking and the generator blueprint is basically fields and trees but nonetheless Codemasters have utilised the tools available to create a worthy Career which hopefully can be altered or expanded upon in the future.

Particular other mentions to: The ingame currency which is earned at a reasonable rate and never insists on grinding a particular event over and over to upgrade xx facility or purchase yy car in order to progress. Car physics (handling) are ok in both modes, although it can be a chore to find a universal XB1 controller setting to stop the 'twitchy' feel of most vehicles in simulation mode. Loading times are excellent and no thumb twiddling waiting to get on with the next event. No gymkhana (hurrah).

Now that my career mode is nearing an end i'm still unsure as to whether the game stays or goes. The random track generator is ok but serves no real purpose and although the leaderboards do represent some form of challenge it's not really something I see myself wanting to do on a long term basis.

And that leaves multiplayer. In an ideal world you take the game online and pitch your skills against real people either in the community events or via game lobbies within various events but honestly, where is everyone? In multiple attempts at the pro league thing I've only ever managed to connect to a four player session once, the daily challenges are down to a couple of hundred players and the matchmaking system has an unnerving tendency to throw up no results when searching for a specific discipline. Selecting ''all'' will generally throw you into a landrush game with anything upto (but never more than) 3 players. All very uninspiring stuff for a series that has always thrived in the multiplayer department. I don't know, maybe the game wasn't as successful as it was supposed to be, or maybe the lack of content has taken it's toll and I've arrived at the party a little late. But whatever the reason, player absence is quite obvious.

But at the end of the day Dirt 4 has served it's purpose and although it's not been a truly inspiring experience it has been well worth the effort. I'd love to think that CM are going to expand on what they have by introducing new or enhanced generator templates or a brand new career mode - basically anything to freshen things up - but historically that's something they never do so I have to assume that nothing will change. It's a shame really because with a little bulking up Dirt 4 is good enough to not be a throw away title.

So, the big question is: Is Dirt 4 the best ever? The answer to that is no because with it's depth of gameplay, variety and pure playability the original Dirt (the one that nobody ever talks about) is by far and away the best of the franchise. I really, really miss that game.

Catch somebody that can go quickly instead. I don't aim to be competitive in Dirt 4. Please don't use me as a benchmark for quickness. :(

gheeD and Joona should make good target practice.

The your stage is really cool. Finally can get away with people hot lapping on all the courses in DR. And the note is awesome, really need to focus on it to know what's happening next.

See, where you're wrong is that DiRT 2 was an AMAZING game. 3 is okay.
Well I honestly thought i'd never hear anyone say that :)
It was really depressing to witness how the once great CMR series slowly deteriorated through the years, finally arriving at the absolutely turgid ''yo, bro'' Americanised sunshine and tarmac nonsense of Dirt 2. Although Dirt 3 wasn't fantastic, at least it made an effort to push the game back in the right direction - with Dirt 4 further pushing the series back towards it's roots.
Just my humble opinion.

One thing though. If Dirt 2 really was that good, really was that popular and really was the correct direction to take the franchise forward then how comes Dirt 4 looks and plays nothing like it? And for a series that was supposedly much loved and highly popular, how comes there was such a huge gap between the release of Dirt 3 and 4? After all, wouldn't it be absolute madness for Codemasters to simply sit on such a financially lucrative franchise?

Dirt 2 is an amazing game indeed, for someone who doesn't care about rallying in the slightest. Funny how there are 6 games in the series before Dirt 2, all being proper rally games, but now comes Dirt 2 with like 5 rally stages only and not a single WRC car, and all of a sudden, it's the best game in the series? Seriously? Dirt 3, while far from being perfect, had tons of classic rally cars including every 4WD Group B car (it was probably the first game ever to have all 5 of them) and way more stages, including real life Monte Carlo stages - it was a step in the right direction. Yes, the Gymkhana events were dreadful, but the rally portion in Dirt 3 is several times better than in Dirt 2, unfortunately that seems to be hard to understand when you're not a real rally fan.

I really enjoyed DiRT 2 (and the car handling was a huge improvement over DiRT), but I am always surprised how many people favour it over DiRT 3. For me DiRT 3 was a technically superior game to D2 and represented rally far better than D2. The car list and locations were much better in D3 as well (though Croatia was excellent in D2).

Because gymkhana dragged it down about 59 notches. At least in my book. Completely ruined the game for me.

:D Man, gymkhana really did divide the crowd, didn't it? I actually enjoyed the Battersea area, but I do agree that far too much of it was shoehorned into the career in DiRT 3.

To me Dirtfish in DiRT 4 is how gymkhana should have been implemented in DiRT 3: a playground for cars (and ideal for testing car setting), plus some car based challenges if you fancy doing something different. But what happens there has zero consequence in the career.

Yeah had they kept it away from career mode, it would have made a great little arcade rally game, and I probably would have kept playing through it every now and again. But being forced to do that crap ... oh hell no. zzzzz
