Is buying a wheel worth it?

Recommended Posts

I consider myself pretty quick.... but I can't break into what I consider the "elite"(top 3,000... I'm not a pro gamer) times on time trial for most tracks. How many seconds does a wheel take off?

*If you started on a controller and moved to a wheel, you're answer is especially valued*

It's up to your own preferences and how you enjoy the game. For me I have tried a wheel at various times in the past, sometimes with a budget wheel and sometimes with more high-end wheels, but I never really liked the feel of it. Especially as there's no feel/feedback in the brake pedal I really struggle with that aspect of it.

So I personally I enjoy the game more with a controller. But there is no denying that a wheel should be faster then a controller once you get fully used to it. Simply having more controll over the throttle and the steering angle makes driving more precise allow for cleaner lines through the corners. Manual downshifts also help a lot in allowing for later braking.

I did the switch from controller to a T300 in F1 2015 and at first I was slower than before. I find that the wheel requires much more practice to get good but the progress will come. I am now faster than I was with the pad, and driving with a wheel is so much more satisfying!

I cannot go back to a controller after I purchased my T150 for PS4 with a playseat revolution. It is just insanely awesome and it even feels normal that I have these things now :open_mouth:

The wheel is more enjoyable amd quicker in some tracks. You will get further than the top 3000 mate the elite guys are at the top 500

Especially on the PS4 you will be faster with a wheel if you've got the skill for it. Not everybody is as good with the wheel as with the pad and vica versa. It's not because a game favours the wheel, that all wheel users are good... I swapped mid game and already a lot faster so yeah.

I play with a pad (on PS4) and tbh i rarely find someone in sprintrace lobbies who is quicker then me, and even if they are it's by only a tenth or 2. Now i'm pretty sure AOR drivers will wipe the floor with me but i never see them in sprintraces

I doubt if a wheel is actually quicker, but i do think it can make a difference in terms of consistent driving

Wheel is more consistent and faster, there's no arguing which is truly faster if you take the best Wheel user and best Pad user, the Wheel guy will win in terms of speed/consistency every time if they're both performing optimally.

Imagine driving a real car with a controller, no chance. The pad users already need filtered inputs and what feels to me like a slight hidden assist when I tried pad.

Yh can I just point out when I tried wheel there is definitely a hidden assist aswell I will turn the wheel as fast as I can and it'll be a lot smoother than it should have been. Aswell pad need an assist otherwise it would be in-driveable ,try wheel-override on f1 2014 it's not fun trust me. All I want is it to be equal, aswell as

But yh I've planned to move to wheel for years but I have always stuck to pad and I always come up with some excuse not to move off it purely cause I don't want to loose my pace. I want to say I'm probably in the top 50-100 people who use pad with no assists.

I would recommend wheel all the way I don't see codies going back the only way I can see this is going is wheel even more op so I would change while u can. I've been using pad for 5 years so it's rly hard for me to go to wheel but if f1 2017 end sup being wheel op ik where i'm going.

I've made the switch from pad to wheel. And my times dropped by a second. BUT, my consistency has been on freaking point. Before I would have 5 laps all vary within 1.5 seconds. NOW, i run 5 laps and my times don't vary any more than .300 - .500 seconds a lap. I don't plan on going back and my times are starting to drop back down towards gamepad best laps. I'd recommend it for sure

Apart from the satisfaction and the halding been designed for wheels, you can also gain a little bit more time, but trust me, you'll see your major improvement in consistenciy and in side by side battles. It will make you faster and you'll enjoy the game more. Although you must buy a supported wheel (listed in the Codemasters Web Page), the t80 for example, it's "just" 80€ and already offers much more than a controller.

Honestly the wheel and pad are probably the most balanced that they have been in awhile.  The biggest imbalance right now is that Medium TC and ABS are faster than non-assists.  This is something that I believe the beta testers are giving feedback on for the next game.

On this debate now it comes down to tracks.  It seems like it depends on the track which one is slighty favored but it is very slight.  Hopefully in the next game they will come out on the leaderboards and say which times are being set by each so we can get a better idea.

But to answer your question the immersion factor is what does it for me.  I would never go back to playing a racing game on the pad.  I want to "feel" like im driving.  When I play with the pad it still "feels" like a game.  And this is one of the few things you can actually simulate with a wheel and pedals!  You can't do that with other genres, like using a bow and arrow and shield with Zelda!

@NickDahy

I can confirm that assists are no longer faster than no assists in 2017 :)

If you have the time and money to get your self a wheel then go for it. But, word of warning. They are expensive and if it breaks and your warranty has ran out, then money has to be forked out to buy another. It's an expensive game.

Doesn't drop by much tbh. Just feels a lot better on the wheel and is easier to drive

Lets hope they keep it like that because if i remember correctly the same was in the last beta, but then they adjusted that for the final released game!

Fingers Crossed!

you will probably get less arthritis in the thumbs using a wheel rather than a pad.
nothing worse than arthritis when you are 80 in a nursing home playing F1 2045.
plus you get more exercise with a wheel.  :-)

Wheel owners do you have a seat or how are you guys holding the pedals and wheel (non desk owners)

Saving currently for a wheel for PS4 but the whole Thrustmaster package is looking about $500. I've seen some chairs for about $200...worth it or what setup do you have? I have hardwood floor so idk how I'd keep the pedals from moving let alone what to do with the wheel.

Looking for any help and Hey @porqchopz :)

Have been using a wheel going back to Geoff Grammonds GP series. I need to use a wheel since I never got the hang of driving with a pad. Just can't do it.

I can really advise the playseat challange. I have this seat for almost 2 years. And it still feels great. Very comfortable and had good build quality (better then i thought when i saw the pictures)

I wanted one but the last time I tried it had run out. Very popular! Working on my own rig instead. Under the stairs hahaha

I got a porche car seat from a wreckers for $70, a frame on ebay for $150 and put it all bolted  on a frame I made, pedals also with a layer of grip cloth underneath them,  frame  on rollers, and a hard wood floor.
