jedgcombe 0 Posted June 18, 2017 dirt4 is a bit disappointing for me. the first game in the franchise that hasn't improved on the last. can't put finger on it. the visuals just don't 'wow' me. they may have even downscaled them, which is frankly inexcusable if it's true. the handling is the same, as long as i set to simulation. so that's good and means i will play through the game and still enjoy it.an example of the visual compromises: those spectacular long distance views in Greece in DR. Incredible to look at. When i view medium to long distances in D4, the trees look cartoony, and flat in comparison. Roadside rocks don't have the same depth and realism either. my gs for the franchise:dirt 1000dirt2 1000dirt3 1060dirt showdown 660dirt rally 1000i know that i'm in the minority here, and that most folk on here love the visuals of D4, but i'm not impressed. Codies should've made a dirt rally 2. My guess is that they still might. Also, the size of dirt rally is 39.6gb. dirt4 is 32.8gb. surely they could've used 20gb more to properly nail the visuals. sqdstr 107 Posted June 18, 2017 There is a thread already for comparison between DR & D4 graphics...
JZStudios 634 Posted June 18, 2017 D4 hands down wins in the graphics department. DR had a very low res lossy .jpeg HDRI environment map, hence the "draw distance."Essentially it's just a low res super compressed photo. Ever look at the sky in DR and see all the weird color artifacts and banding? It's not present in D4.I can also personally attest to the draw distance being pretty minimal in DR. Just a few feet off either side of the track and everything disappears or goes VERY low res. The distant trees don't look like the roadside trees at all D4 improved on that. But yeah, I've already made a comparison thread if you want to talk about it. Very rough around the edges, hard to really distinguish stuff from a far.Everything maxed on a GTX 1070.

jedgcombe 0 Posted June 18, 2017 You guys certainly shut me up lol! I don't know why, but for me it just lacks something. Even the head on view of my car before each stage starts just doesn't have the same graphical detail. I must be missing something. I'm playing it on the original Xbox One by the way. And I still love playing it, as the handling is a good, if not better. Cheers for all your comments.

Yeah, well in real life it's hard for me to distinguish stuff from afar.Everything through prescription glasses.

Dirt 4 is smaller than Dirt Rally because it uses a different type of compression witch is more efficient than Dirt Rally's one, if Dirt 4 wasn't compressed like this it would probably be quite bigger than Dirt Rally
MaXyMsrpl 281 Posted June 19, 2017 Could you elaborate more? What kind of compression is used in DR and what in D4?
