Do we need Halo on 2018?

It comes down to Martin Brundle's conclusion really doesn't it - if you don't want the possibility of drivers being injured or killed racing, take them out of the car altogether. Motor racing is dangerous, and anyone who doesn't want to be a part of that can do something else.

I agree, F1 is already safe enough for the drivers, and the money spent on the development of halo could be far more useful to improve safety of other people involved in motorsport, such as;

  1. The marshals - as I have mentioned in one or 2 other discussions, their safety could be improved by simply having a common sense approach to their deployment on track - marshals should not be allowed on track without a VSC/SC - double waved yellows is not good enough when unprotected VOLUNTEERS are deployed on track.
  2. Drivers in junior categories - junior categories are far less safe than F1, so I think the FIA should spend more money on improving the safety in these series, instead of spending money developing the halo.

I hugely dislike it but its coming so it is what it is. I don't think there are many issues visually as we have binocular vision, the only example got me thinking was downhill to Eau Rouge it will be fairly difficult to spot cars/accidents further up the hill. Austin Turn 1 may suffer from this a little too.

I think everyone who is running in Hungary test should run the Halo. They should even setup a little ten lap sprint race and see what the drivers think of the halo when they are fighting other cars rather than driving round in practice.

I dont reckon there should be any issues at USA/Belgium - there are several categories with closed cockpits, so they would surely have their vision blocked more than the halo, because of the roof of the vehicle being above their head and eyeline.

I may be wrong, but my view is that the FIA seem too tentative to turn F1 into closed cockpit racing (fearing the loss of fans and changing the DNA of F1), so they are going to do it in stages over the next few years - the halo being the 1st step.

However, I think this is the wrong approach, as I know I certainly would prefer a closed cockpit with a fighter jet style canopy rather than the ugly looking halo.

the simple part on the car car being ugly makes the whole car ugly. Leslie Ash actress was beautiful until she decided to have her lips done turning her into a fugly mess, can't bear to look at her now..same difference. :smile:
Its not a bad comparison...

you guys are acting like this is the first time the FIA has made a rule that makes these cars god awful ugly. Like its the first time fans had to accept some terrible thing being put on the car. All thur the decades of the history of F1 something of this nature has been done to the car. You guys are making this so dramatic and its nothing more than giving you a taste of what us old timers F1 fans have always been going thur to watch the sport.   If you would let a ugly part of the car stop you from watching it then you wouldnt have lasted very long watching F1 back in the day. If you love the sport then how can a simple part on the car being ugly make you turn away from it.

Just a few random monstrosities I remember or have read about in F1 encyclopedia's. I actually really really like the Cosworth 4WD, it the bare metal think that looks like it should have been in Mad Max.

I'm with you, I'll still watch it as always. Its just some more ugly cars we can reference back to in future...
