Dirt Rally VR low fps / locked to 45 frames - CPU intensive?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I just got an Oculus Rift and so obviously the first thing I wanted to do was get myself in Dirt Rally!

Its a brilliant game anyway, but VR takes it to a new level. So immersive. That said, in order to get 90 frames out of it I have to put the graphics settings on ultra low. If I up it fractionally I can get 60-80 frames (fluctuating). If I make it look vaguely decent I'm locked at 45 frames and experience stuttering which ruins the immersion. I can normally get a great FPS when I play on a monitor.

I have an i5, 8 Gb RAM and an MSI 1080 Gaming X Plus. My GPU usage seems to sit at about 45% in game, but my CPU usage in game can hit 87% but usually hovers between 60-80.

Is Dirt Rally in VR mode just notorious hard to please, or am I bottlenecking with my CPU? Could that be causing the low frames and stutter?

Cheers for any help and advice you can offer.

I would say you're bottlenecking your CPU.

What specific model of i5 you got?
Did you tried to un-park the cores?

Hi Versedi,

I have an i5-4690K @ 3.5, and I think you might be right more so than ever now as I just came out of completely different game and checked my CPU usage and it was at around 98% constantly lol.

I did overclock it but I think either my mobo or RAM or something ain't right as it won't even let me change the necessary settings, even with it all on manual. If I use my ASUS mobos auto overclocking util, the machine just keeps crashing out before even loading up. Maybe VR is the excuse I've been looking for to go i7. :) May hold off for the next release though to see if theres a price drop on Kaby Lake's.
