According to a F1 article Renault and Ferrari knew 5 years in advance what type of engine the teams will be using in 2014.

That was bit of an awkward crash. It's because of the lower nose. If they still had the higher nose, Maldonado would have launched over the car, but the lower nose means that anyone who is t-boned gets flipped over
