Thinking about buying a wheel...

Recommended Posts

I bought this game on release day and I'm having a blast. The last few days I've been thinking about getting a wheel (G29 with pedals and gear shifter.

Whats the benefits of using a wheel over a controller?

Is is it worth getting a wheel for this game? I do have other racing/driving games.

The main benefit is simply that it's more fun, because it feels more "realistic" -- whatever that means for a video game.

More specifically, a force feedback wheel will let you feel (for example) the limit of grip as you're going round a corner. And it's easier to make micro-corrections to your steering, brake and throttle in response to that, simply because the range of movement in a wheel and pedals is much greater than the joysticks and triggers on a pad.

Debates rage every year about whether wheel or pad users have an unfair speed advantage. In general, most of the fastest times on the leaderboards are set by wheel users, but there are some lightning quick pad users too. In the wet, pad users do sometimes tend to have an advantage due to the "hidden traction control" that's usually implemented for pad users, but that varies from year to year.

Get a wheel. It is a bit harder in the beginning, but once you get use to it it is much more fun to drive.
I have the Thrustmaster 150. Works fine.

Don't buy the Logitech - buy a Thrustmaster T150 or T300. You don't need a gear shifter unless you really want to focus on classic cars.

If possible, get the Thrustmaster T3PA pedals too.

I switched from controller to wheel in the first week of ever playing an F1 game and never looked back.

It's joyous.

Go with a thrust master. I've had mine since project cars came out and have not had any problems! Hope I didn't just jinx myself :D

Totally agree with this

I would recommend the f1 wheel rim add on aswell.

I looked at a wheel and racing seat set up for many months. Watching endless amounts of youtube videos until i decided to splash out and get the wheel, chair, pedals and add on rim and i haven't looked back.

By far the best gaming experience ever.

So much fun without a pad

The feel of a FFB wheel is epic for immersion. This game is also really good with a wheel, the handling is amazing.
I have a Thrustmaster TMX and it's awesome

I use and app on my phone called pricespy. Allows me to search for anything and it will show the cheapest sites. Off top of my head box.co.uk is a really good site to buy from

Does anyone have any experience with the Logitech g920 wheel. I have been looking at that and it seems to be good for the money. Can pick one up second hand for about £130 I think.

Are thurstmaster much much better for the same sort of money/level of wheel?? If so, why...

This version of F1 is the better with a controller (X-Box One). I can drive very well in Elite, no assists.

I play with a PS4 Pro and I am using a G29, I had a T300 but the pedals gave out after 6 months, I purchased the T3PA Pedals and they broke within a month. I had to ship them back with some considerable effort (photographs of parts/disassemble of unit/reassemble of unit) then ship it off only to be returned unassembled! I would say that in my instance that the G29 is a better unit as it's still going strong after over a year of consistent use. The other, maybe more important consideration is the placement of the wheel... I ended up with a very expensive sim rig after getting tired of removing the wheel from my desk! haha good times and racing with a wheel is definitely better no matter which one you choose.

I have this wheel and have absolutely no issues with it, I love the racing I get from it and never get any kind of cramps or soreness from long period usage (2-3 100% races in a row).

There is only one problem with getting a wheel. You will never leave the house! It's simply amazing!!!!

I would recommend Thrustmater T300 with T3PA pedals. It's a littlebit more expensive than the Logitech G920 but it's also better. Thrustmaster's FFB is also better.

The pedals are much better than standard TMX or TX pedals. Its very easy to take the pedals apart and invert mount to a rig, feels great. I think part of the reason it gets a bad name is due to the fact many existing logitech users were not happy they were forced to buy the newer wheels when they already had perfectly good G25's / G27's.

I would advise the thrustmaster with f1 rim if you play a lot of f1.

I must say i have had a unit that broke rather quickly but thrustmaster replaced it within 10 business days (send from Netherlands to England and back), so maybe not the best build quality but they give (in my opinion) great support.
