F1 2017 PS4/PS4 Pro Tearing

Recommended Posts

@F1Support asked me to make a new thread about the tearing which seems to get worse each an every lap. I drove a 5 lap race in Spa and the tearing was worse ant the end of the race than at the beginning. Especially turn 11 (before the great Pouhon) ist tearing and stuttering big time.

I tested it a lot with 5 Lap Races. As I drove a 25% race the issue seemed to be better.

Here is the video of my last race (don't judge me on driving  B) )

Monza is by far the worst race. Constant tearing...Framerate is not even close to smooth

Almost every track has tearing on ps4 pro!! Codemasters get your shit together!!
Plus the flickering sky.
And not to mention the ps4 pro cooling fan !!
If i buy a game for€60 i expect that it's technicly fine.
But F1 is by far the worst release ever!!
It's F1 2016 all over again.

If you make the switch to F1 2016 you will notice how bad the graphical performance of F1 2017 is in comparison. F1 2016 is so smooth. I also tested more races yesterday but I was fed up with it. Constant tearing and framerate drops. It just kills all the fun you could have with this game. E.g. Monza! Today is the first practice day, I would love to start my Grand Prix weekend BUT I know what lies in front of me. The tearing starts at the first chicane and it will be worse in the second and in the lesmos, than on the way down to ascari it will stutter and than it might fade on the back straight. This is no fun, it kills the game for me.

I really hope that they can patch it!

F1 2016 has quite heavy tearing and frame drops as well on tracks like Spa, Monza etc on standard Ps4 but was more or less eliminated with boost mode on Pro, which gives additional computing power on the 1080p frame buffer.

Trees and number of objects on track in general seems to have a significant correlation to frame rate.

If the game engine cant be optimized, a quick fix could be to reduce number of heavy lifting objects. But Codemasters maybe does not want to branch their track code base for different platforms.

I hope that we will get a detailed response from @F1Support soon. This must be improved, especially the pro should be able to at least produce a tearing free picture.

Here is another video. This time Monza. Tearing and stuttering (framerate drops?) is visible for almost the whole race. Only the back straight is free from issues.

yes it is...it just kills the whole experience. You cannot concentrate yourself fulltime on driving due to this big issue...

Yes technically each tear and stutter is the result of the game not keeping 60 FPS mening at TV refresh the frame to display is incomplete.

I have spoken to the rendering guys to see if it's possible to reinstate the boost mode on PS4 Pro by only rendering at 1080 instead of 4K and downscaling. We're not sure if we're able to do that yet.

@F1Support

Thank you for the response and the news! That would be awesome! I hope you guys are able to do it!

@F1Support thank you for asking. It would be great if they figure it out. That would certainly improve the general mood of your console customer base.

@F1Support
Will anti-aliasing be improved on PS4 standard and Xbox One ? It looks pretty bad.

@MSC2k13

An 1080p verion on PS4 pro will be a bad option. Except technicall issues F1 2017 looks so smooth on PS4 pro on a 1080p screen. An 1080p version will make a lot of aliasing and a poor anisotropic filter. The only solution is technical optimisation to improve framerate, juste as Slighty Mad Studio did with project cars on PS4 and Xbox one.

@fifi25
Agree, but ideally there should be an option available inside the game where you could select between 1080p performance mode or high resolution mode, on pro.

Bells and whistles or solid 60 FPS up to each and everyone....

Other pro games have this.

But sure, optimizations would be welcomed but since 2015 and 2016 games things have not really been optimized yet have they.

@Rillelives yes an option to choose between 4k downscale and an improve 1080p (with better anisotropic filter, better anti aliasing, higher effects and bette performance), it should be the perfect solution just like Horizon zero dawn.

but not the same 1080p version than PS4 and Xbox One that looks ugly, the PS4 Pro could do really better and it would be a shame.

Yes there should be room for a bump in AA/Filtering considering the GPU has double capacity...

Two videos of the race I just wanted to do but which I've quit mid-session because the tearing and stuttering was so bad and distracting. It was so bad, that it has such a big affect on the racing and the whole experience.

First off, TV-Pod:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=05pRiBpKl8Y&t=2s

Second Video is in cockpit view:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x6lNS54wn8k

Judge yourself but for me, this whole issue destroys the game and I'm on that point, that I really think about quitting this game. I simply have no fun at all because of that. If it would be better in another cam, it would be manageable, but it isn't. Each cam is influenced and just a few are "slighly" better. If this cannot be patched, I think I will trade the game...it simply is gamebreaking for me personally and each time I turn the game on I get more frustrated.

Yes it's on every track! I can confirm it! So annoying and it influences the racing so much. Sometimes you concentrate on the apex, than you have tearing all over and you miss the apex because of that! I mean I don't get why IGN for example doesn't even mention it in their PS4-review. As a customer who intends to buy this game you should be informed about that! I must be fixed. It seems that 1.6 won't fix it so lets hope 1.7 will be the long awaited tearing fix!
