Safety Car Period

Anyone else had problem with the safety car. I was a couple of seconds behind the next car in the US Grand Prix (F1 Championship on Xbox). The other cars didn't seem to have to slow down as much to stay within the max sector times & so by the time they caught the safety car & toured round for 2 laps it went off I was some 10-12 secs behind. I also find that I do the fastest lap of the race & the gap to the car in front was reporting as having grown not shrunk. Timings in general seem a little erratic. I've had a few qualifying sessions where I have held up the car behind for 2 sectors & they had slow times, they then come across the line with pole position times.
