Why are the display graphics on steering wheel different

Recommended Posts

If we are already criticizing the dull and uninformative steering wheel that Codies offered for ages, let's also add the next best thing we always get to see behind the steering wheel:

The drivers legs.

There is no leg protection / leg padding in any Codies F1 game since F1 2010 released, many have countlessly criticized the lack of accuracy in Codies virtual car build, but these topics are reappearing for almost 8 years now.....

I seriously have lost all hope for this company, imho TOCA, DIRT and GRID were amazing but the F1 series just doesn't get the justice it deserves!

Tbh, it's not something I personally care about. I rather have other realism things added than some leg restrainers.

People on this forum cry about the dumbest shiiiit.

I get it if the steering wheels arent accurate, since honestly if you drive in cockpit view you kinda want that info.

But leg padding, who faaacking cares?

It's the "officially licenced" F1 product, isn't it?!

If it wasn't your point would be more than valid....

So because it's the official game, everything needs to be 100% authentic. Especially leg restrainers!!
There are many other things that could be authentic and that more people want than leg restrainers.

For this reason I use a third party dashboard app, mounted just above my steering wheel. Gives me all the needed information at the swipe of my finger.

Speed is instinctive in a race car and largely irrelevant to know the exact speed you are doing.
No, it is not. When you are making a setup is super relevant to know you speed in/out corners and your speed just before opening DRS.

I dare you change one point in rear camber and tell if it is better or worse then before just with your instinct. Just try it...
C'mon, theres no time to compare this when you're racing. That's why speed data is a useless thing on race cars. Good only on telemetry purposes.

Even Schumacher had tried this on early 90's years. He had 3 speedometers on his Benetton. One for save the minimum speed, other to save the maximum speed and the last on with the speed.

But he gave up from this on the middle of 1993 season. It was useless.

No, it is not! During race you will probably look less to speed due to proximity with others cars, but once you learn how speed is useful to understand your lap times you will use it a lot.

During practice and qualify it is so useful! Really. If you exit last corner 3 or 4 km/h faster than before you know how good was you breaking point.

Probably majority of players use that green/yellow/red color line guide. But once you turn it off and start to seek your own breaking point you can feel freedom flowing through your wheels. And speed helps you find the best point for breaking and then turning.

About Schumacher, in that time F1 cars shown revs count on the display. A driver knew which gears he was and checked revs in order to know if he was being faster or slower than previous laps. Schumacher was a rookie and asked for speedometer. However, after a while he started to use gears + revs to compare his own speed.

Nowadays revs aren't displayed anymore. There are just shift lights. Then it is important to compare your speed with previous laps when you are setting up the car or seeking breaking points.

This is the real Sauber wheel layout, look how important speed is:

My guess is the amount of data they'd have to cram on the screen is quite a lot, even on cockpit cam. Though I don't see why they can't fit at least fuel target, laptime deltas (including for SC/VSC) and maybe if they ever integrate ERS, then a battery display. Honestly, I feel like if you use cockpit cam, the MFD should just appear on the steering wheel screen, and have pages you can scroll through. That would be plenty accurate for this game.
