Homebuilt F1 Rig for F1 2017

Recommended Posts

WIP for my new rig. Compact but fully adjustable w/ custom molded seat in F1 position out of polyurethane foam. I designed it so I could change the team by mounting different placards in just a few minutes. Built it for about $400. Need to still cover the wood w/ carbon fiber vinyl and cover the seat with fabric.

Is that black 8020? Looks like very nice stuff to work with, haven't come across it in black which makes it look much better than the standard treatment

Yep, that is the black 8020 extrusions. You can get both but the black is typically a little more expensive.

For eye tracking purposes, what do you estimate the distance would be from your eyes to the monitor?

I usually put the monitor on a separate stand straddling the cockpit, just past the wheel and angling down slightly. I guess I would be about 20 inches or so.

This is what I have built some time a ago. Best seat I ever had. 5.1 sound in mirrors and headrest, subwoofer under the seat and totally focussed because you don't get distracted in this seat. Sold this one because I got an offer I couldn't refuse. Still regret this. :'(

Waiting for a tutorial video ;) - looks so damn good! Mad respect
At some point, if I don't get too lazy, I'll throw together some plans and a part list. It's super simple construction. The 8020 stuff was about $220, a few pieces of 2'x2' MDF from Home Depot, and the expandable foam for the seat was about $70. Here are some pics to show the basic progression of custom molding the seat: https://imgur.com/a/lTMK0

Just for fun, here is a 2015 Lotus I built just recently:

I have seen this before. Freaking awesome and great build. Once I get our house completely done I will start a new build. I have seen some great sixties models (Lotus) I will try to replicate.
