F1 2018 ideas

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I love the F1 series of Codemasters, you can see big steps being made with every new game they drop. I got some ideas for the 2018 version which I would love to share and discuss with who ever is interested. So here is my list:

1. Career mode has grown massively this season with the new development tree. There is so much more to upgrade than in 2016 which extends the playing time massively. But career mode still is too much about driving and not really a career experience. I would love to see more depth. Put in the stats of all drivers, even the legends of the past. What makes a career better than trying to beat Michaels records? Show poles, race wins, podiums, world championships won, number of races raced and those kind of stats, that should be pretty simple and would add great fun to the game to try and beat those records.

2. Commentary is pretty boring. Make it more interactive with your career. When you for instants win your first race let them say that and congratulate the driver. Don't make it too predictable but make it a bit more special with special stats, for instants when you get your 10th pole of your career, 20th win or when you beat a record (or climp on the list when you pass a legend). Also when you win the championship, mention how many championships you've won, like now this was Lewis his 4th. Then also mention how you pair to other legends and mention it when you beat them. Moral of the story, involve your actual results in the commentary, make it come alive more. PS. I would love it if you would be able to get Martin Brundle involved, if he isn't too expensive.

3. The cutscenes in the game should be better, it feels like it has been the same for all the past games. The start of practice/qualifying sessions when they film in the garage when Crofty is talking is always the same, change it up so there are more different scenes. Just as the scenes on the grid or when the race finishes and you get out of the car and onto the podium. Its so dull, change it up, maybe even look at the drivers situation. When its your 8th win of the season the celebration is different than when you win with a car that normally isn't competitive enough. Make a cutscene where you look through the eyes of the driver when you get on stage. Also there is no celebration when you become world champion, no trophy, no celebration with the team, only some donuts and a textbox when you get back to your laptop. Moral of the story, pump up the whole experience of the career, its now only about the racing itself. Look at how FIFA or MADDEN have even a whole story mode like a little playable movie script.

4. Drivers AI. This season kimi somehow was the man to beat in F1 2017, but thats not the case in real life. The AI of the drivers should match more their real skill level compared to each other. Also look at specialties of the drivers, for instants Lewis or Max who are just better drivers in the rain then the rest. Or daniel who is one of the best dive bombers in the game. Talking about that, the AI never does that, no matter if you keep the door wide open, I never get a driver try to overtake me. When you put the AI level higher it only changes the spots they brake at and start accelerating, so the diving should be always there (if possible), if they end up braking too early they wont make it, but atleast there was an attempt.

5. Switching teams. When you switch teams you can't choose your teammate, the number one driver is always the one you will race, even if you join the new team as the number one. Personally I would like to see that you could choose who you want as your teammate. I know that AI drivers never change team, cause F1 teams don't want to see their drivers wear the competitions uniform in the game, but I still think thats nonsense and Codemasters should push for that to change.

6. Reliabillity. There are different forms of reliabillity in the game. The one of the development succeeding or failing is way too agressive, at Redbull I had more than half of them failing, which is too much. Also reliabillity of parts can be very poor, it should match reality a bit more. Also in the game, too many times I have Lewis or Seb leading the race and then having a technical problem and have a DNF. It could happen occaissionally but it happens too often. Me myself had never had any issues, not once did my engine die on my, I only had some stuttering of the clutch, but that never happened anymore after a few upgrades. I want to have a engine failure for once, its part of racing, it should occassionally happen to a power unit that is still green or yellow, not only when its in the red.

7. We love to hear drivers' opinions, so why not have interviews after the race? Put in some options to choose from which forms the character of your driver. Be a bad boy or the ideal son in law by giving different kind of answers to questions. Maybe involve other drivers with who you had a huge battle in the race and make that part of the rivalry system. Now the rival is picked pretty randomly, it would make more sense if a driver becomes your rival because of battles on the track (and in interviews). Create real rivalries with the guys you fight for championships with, maybe even mention it during grid walks where Martin Brundle talks about the rivalry before the race, just to add to the whole experience.

8. The upgrade system is massive and extends the level of fun massively,  but isn't F1 also about regulation changes and shouldn't that mix up the grid a bit? So why not put that in the game as well? Just reset the upgrade system after for instants 5 years and switch up the skill level a bit, not completely random where Sauber and Haas are all of a sudden the best teams, but switch it up a bit amongst the top teams, midfield teams and backmarkers, backmarkers should be able to become midfield players and the otherway around. Let Williams maybe switch between midfield team and top team and Haas between midfield and backmarkers. You get the drill.

I trully think the main focus for 2018 should be on the whole experience around the racing, just as Liberty are focussing on it in real life, make it more exciting, make this game so good that it can compare to franchises like FIFA, NBA2K and Madden. The racing itself only needs the regular tweaks that already are being adressed in patches. A great F1 game franchise is a great way to gain more young fans to the sport so I am curious about the involvement of Liberty in making these games (financially and maybe even helping out with odeas or making certain things happen with the teams, Codemasters has a lot less influence on the teams than Liberty could have).

Ow and last but not least, give us the option to drive without the Halo, I just thought about the idea of having to race with the Halo in 2018's game and it made me sad, so please, give us that option!
