Any tips to be faster?

Recommended Posts

Right, so I just got the game cheap on the dashboard last week, been playing online and finding myself getting battered.

I'm not the type of person to brag even though it sounds like I'm going to, but I'm pretty good at racing games, so to find myself so much slower than some of racers still on this game bemuses me, I'm totally lost..

As much of an F1 fan I am, I haven't bought the last few games due to the fact they were just the same.

So what can I do? I've been going on the time trail leaderboards and saving the number 1 setup from each track, I've tried different assists, I haven't gone down to no TCS or ABS yet but I have used medium traction. Okay I haven't tried no assists yet but I can't see that being all the time difference, I've completed achievements on other F1 games winning the championship with no assists etc and I race on Forza with no assists all the time so I can't be too shabby at racing games.

So what is it, setups? Controller calibration? People corner cutting? Cheating? Assists being used? The fact I'm using a controller?

I know steering wheel is quicker, but doesn't account for that time difference, can't even get that close on time trail and other games I would be a lot closer, don't know if people use different setups for online either compared to time trail.

Also I do know you can have equal cars or realistic online before anyone mentions that.

Anyway I would appreciate the help I'm just totally lost.

Get brake bias that suit for you and the highest brake pressure you can achieve without locking brakes.

It's all about exit speed, nail the corner and you gain a lot time, smoothly go from brakes to throttle to gain
maximum acceleration without loosing grip.

Track knowledge. Learn the tracks.

You're not going to be in the top 10 of the leaderboards a week after playing the game, it takes time for most people other than the aliens.

Turn off all assists and keep practicing

I’d consider myself fairly quick on the pad at least from my own perspective, I haven’t changed the calibration other than brake and throttle linearity since it’s a good quality controller (Xbox One Elite) but I know people who recalibrate for flaws in theirs.

Personally I don’t think saving the top time setup is a good idea, sure from track to track there are common things people will change, but I’d recommend changing the setup around for your own preferences and where you feel you’re lacking. Maybe you need to alter the downforce, or you’re not getting enough rear traction quick enough on exis, etc etc. Time trial is also the ideal conditions for a hot lap, and isn’t focused on tyre wear or fuel conservation, it’s not always ideal to use a TT setup depending on race distance.

Assists will slow you down later on but at this point it’s not something to consider focusing too hard on. As hyjal said, track knowledge is pivotal, the virtual racing line is an estimate but it won’t do all of the thinking for you. Keep in mind that where you brake and what part of the apex you aim for depends on the type of corner.

Thats just my input but what you should focus on varies from person to person, hopefully at least one thing I said here wasn’t totally useless. Always glad to help

To the two that mentioned "the body" I'm not actually sure what you mean? It depends on the tracks, I'm a few seconds off online per lap, for instance I'm like 2 seconds slower on Brazil time trail (can't remember if I used medium tradition or full, but ABS was on), I just don't expect to be so far off.

I pretty much know all the tracks that's not a problem, some of the newer tracks I do need to get used to more though and learn. I'm not expecting to be topping the leaderboards don't worry, but I thought I'd be closer considering past F1 games.

Yeah I know that the games will be all different handling wise, I just never felt so lost to how I'm so far off the pace on a racing game.

I'll have to give assists off more of a try, I can race Forza assists off no problem and I do know the games are different, I just don't imagine everyone online using no assists.. I've never been the best at making my own setups that's why I've just been bolting one on from time trail, but I'll have to look into the brake pressures etc so thanks for that.

I'm not arrogant as it may sound but I just know the level of myself, thanks for all the tips guys I do appreciate it!

Sometimes cars and handling models and other factors can come in. Last year, I was in the 2000s on the time trial leaderboards and now I have the WR at Baku. This just shows that sometimes the game and cars can just suit your driving style more.

Also, at this point in the year, less people will be online so the ones that are are the dedicated players who will be more skilled. I hate to say it but practice does make perfect and these guys have had all year.

In addition when you say you’re good at other racing games, I have found this game to be fairly different to most so adapting to it can be hard.

Finally, look on the time trial leaderboards and compare yourself to the people closer to you, where are they gaining time? How are their setups different? Just looking at the top is not what you want to do because I know that I can be p50 on the leaderboard but 1 second off of Formula Dani.

I hope that some of this might help. But my main message is just turn some laps.

Manual shiffting also improves your times ones you master it. Can be up to half a second. People tend to take corners in a lower gear than possible. If you use manual shifting see which corners you now take in second gear. Most of them can be taken in third gear which gives you a better and faster exit.

Building on this, for some tight hairpins like in China, you can flick down and up an extra gear mid corner  (so if its a second gear hairpin, flick into first and back to second right before the apex) to help rotate the car that bit more.

Honestly, if you're running medium traction, within a few hours of playing you should be able to turn it off. This is by far one of the easiest F1 games to run without TC.
