F1 2018 / 2019 wishlist

Recommended Posts

Seeing as we are nearing the official release of F1 2018 I figured I'd join in the discussion and write some wishes for the game and as it might be too late for this years instalment then for next years... Hopefully lol. Here we go... (Side note: these are all for single player only. I have not and never will touch multiplayer).

#1 is pretty straight forward but in F1 2017 I honestly disliked the whole "a Mercedes" etc. Whenever you practiced, qualified or finished the race in top 3 instead of saying at least a first name. Hell, if you can't add first names at least give us pre-set nicknames or race names lol I hate that the car manufacture was being pronounced. Feels so UN-authentic and it doesn't feel like it's actually me racing.

#2 I hope that this new pit reporter will be connected on a year to year basis and doesn't just reset from season to season. If I win the championship then have the game talk about it from week to week the following season instead of like in 2017 where with a click of a button you're into the next season and there is nothing. Literally nothing... just racing like it's your first season except it says season 2 lol and hopefully your first win as an F1 driver is celebrated way more than in F1 2017 because your first win in career mode in F1 2017 wasn't celebrated at all. Well, if we are being honest all victory celebrations are pretty bland in the game lol but seriously when you win your first race there should be a damn near end of the world celebration lol. Anyway, have the reporter ask how it feels to be defending champion or talk about last seasons rivalries, how you think the car will handle or perform this year over last year with new packages and improvements, maybe you have a new teammate and she asks you about him etc. Make the years feel connected and more life-like. Also, give me the option to deny an interview. If I had a mechanical failure or crashed into another driver and don't want to talk I should be able to just walk away or if the game was super life-like if I crashed into say Grosjean give me the option to call him out specifically in a post-race interview and BOOM! Rivalry started. Instead of clicking a few buttons and choosing a rival. Make rivalries stem from real racing scenarios. Maybe a driver cut you off on pit road, blocked you when you went for a qualifying run, raced you hard during a practice session or ran you off the track during the race. I should be able to comment on that and possibly start a rivalry from those actions. Subsequently, if I piss off another driver doing one of those things then maybe a driver starts a rivalry with me. That would be cool.

#3 with the addition of all these classic cars I'd like to see some classic tracks. That's pretty much it for #3

#4 is in regards to custom grand prixs. (Let's get this out of the way first... I know you can customize the weather down to specific stages of the race, customize time of day and the speed at which time of day progresses) however, I wish you could customize that by a race to race basis. Instead, as it stands, what you choose will be the same weather, start times and progression for the entire custom grand prixs. If I want the first race to be an afternoon race in Montreal but the second race a night race in Bahrain without having to do individual grand prixs I should be able to do that. Other than that I'm looking forward to seeing how the clouds and weather is enhanced in this years version of the game and hoping it has more of an impact on the racing and race strategy. It would be cool to do night races where night races aren't actually held but I know that's impossible as most tracks don't have the lighting for it.

#5 to do with tyre wear. Should make the tyres blister and wear more realistic. Have the track temps make you re-think strategy. Just last race at Silverstone everyone was worried about how hot it was and what that would do to tyre wear. That should be in the game to make it feel more realistic.

#6 R&D improvements and dynamic scenarios. I can't comment too much on this as I've seen the YouTube videos where it is discussed that the R&D trees will be totally revamped and will reset season to season which sounds great. One area though I hope is improved is that when research is done instead of a cutscene that has your engineer saying "it didn't work sorry and btw you're now out all those points with nothing to show for it" maybe actually have the research complete and have a prompt that asks if you want to run the new parts (even if they end up failing but at this point you don't know if they will fail or give an advantage) on the car for the next race or a race in the future. In real life F1 teams are constantly bringing new pieces for races to gain an advantage and sometimes they don't work out (Mercedes at Austria) and mechanical failures occur. That would be a nice improvement to see even though it would suck to have a failure it's a part of racing and in F1 2017 I don't think I've ever had a mechanical failure during a race. Better then losing all your points and having nothing to show for it except a cutscene that says it didn't work and you just go about it as before you did anything. There should be real consequences to bringing new parts but the payoff could be a big advantage to help you win the race and the better the team you're on means the odds of those parts working is higher.

#7 A.I improvements, strategy and information. This is kind of a 3-in-1. A.I needs to be more aggressive (think Vettel at Silverstone on Bottas who surprised him with that dive and took the lead and went on to win the race) show me more of that in the game. Have them on different pit strategy and tyre strategy. And if I'm racing vettel or vettel and Bottas for the championship I should be able to request when they are pitting, tyres they are using and where they are on the track compared to me. If I'm in 5th and Vettel is in 2nd I may want to know his lap times and how many seconds he's ahead of me currently. I feel like the in-game engineer can give a bit more information than currently in the game. I shouldn't have to be constantly clicking through the on-screen display to find out certain things as I lose my focus on the track and end up braking late. A little more vocal would be nice. And for the gamers who don't like it then they can turn him off or dial him back a bit so everyone wins. Also, if my teammate has an issue with the car or if a driver I'm in a tight championship battle with has an issue I want to know what the exact issue is. Maybe I did some R&D on a new gearbox and Bottas had an issue and now I'm racing thinking well maybe I'm going to have the same problem in the race.

#8 in race investigations. This should be included no matter what. It's in real F1. If someone spins me or if I spin another driver there should be the appropriate penalty. Drive through, 5 second, 10 second penalties etc. They seem to only exist for the user and not the A.I. Maybe the A.I in the middle of the pack have an incident going into turn 1 and one of them gets a penalty. Maybe a driver does something wrong in practice like blocking the racing line and is awarded a grid penalty for the race. All these things make the game just a little more life-like. Instead of it seemingly only if the user does something wrong lol

#9 In season changes. I can't speak to this too much as I didn't really play career mode lol. More of a custom grand prix person and the career mode isn't that great so someone can comment to me to shut up if it's already in F1 2017 and I know some of these features are coming to F1 2018 but I'm literally just writing every idea coming to my mind right now regardless. Anyway, give the option to negotiate contracts mid season. Maybe we get released at the end of season and different drivers swap teams. I was going to sign with Red Bull but they re-sign both their drivers. I get released from Mercedes and they sign Vettel so I end up with Ferrari. Doesn't have to be exactly like that but driver and team change ups would be a nice addition. Not the same drivers with the same teams for all 10 seasons and only one changes when I choose to go elsewhere and take his spot.

#10 pre-season tyre testing. Totally optional. Want to do it? Turn it on. Want to skip it? Turn it off. If you do complete it you get awarded extra R&D points or your cars have a bit more of an advantage from the start of the season or at certain tracks as you know the strategy and your car better. Pretty straight forward. Especially useful if you're on a team that isn't as powerful as Ferrari or Mercedes and are battling for 6th, 7th or 8th in the drivers standings.

That's pretty much it for now. I'll probably update this list when I play F1 2018 and get to see exactly what they did and didn't add.

Nice suggestions :)

#1 is already confirmed for this year, I saw a tweet from one of the devs saying you'll now have a list of audio names to choose from.

#4 Interesting, are you sure it's not possible to change the weather while the next GP is loading? When the track's loading screen comes up, press options, I believe you should be able to week every setting there, including customized weather in between GPs.

I really want to know the gaps for the rest of the field, not only of one behind and ahead.
Don't know if it's in 2018, but the E3 Gameplay didn't have it, so i think it won't be in.

That would be a nice addition. Especially if you're racing someone for the championship and you want to keep tabs on them. If you're in 5th and they're in 2nd you want to know the distance from you to them. Would be a nice add-on. We can only hope lol

I'd love to see that in game too. Until that time though; If you didn't know already, there are quite a few apps for the game that you can download to use with your phone/tablet, it uses the UDP telemetry function in the game. With these apps you can use your device as a second screen to display position/gap info for every car, telemetry/temperatures, pretty much anything. The video below is a good example of what you can do with it:

Oh that's sweet, i'll try that! At the moment i'm using the ARGHud Mod that uses the FOM Graphics as an Overlay to see for example the whole Field. I love it, that's why i'm hoping Codemasters will give us something to see gaps of all the Field, but why should they after 7 Years in which they haven't.

Well they have done that in other games during the last 4 years.

Like your #9 idea but this is the official 2018 f1 so fom probably won't allow it has been discussed a few times though but i'm not to sure if they would be allow to do that as some sponsors sponsor for a particular driver like hamilton so if he moved into a different this could create a bit of chaos with spons9r not being used correctly as you got to remember f1 is a business to some of these companies

The AI are already getting penalties the same way as the player, it's just that you won't always know if you don't check the race director's incident page. In F1 2017 you can see AI getting penalties for collisions, blocking, ignoring yellow flags, corner cutting etc, I've even seen them getting penalties for speeding in the pit lane a couple of times.

Really hoping that it’ll have better wheel force feedback and more feeling from the tyres/physics and tracks.
For me it’s the most important thing that needs improving from last years and 2016’s

I think @DGreco said something about the FFB some time ago that it was as good as they were able to do that year. With my experience, the FFB is really good. On the level with every other racing game.

I have a couple of improvements in mind that I'd like Codies to implement to the next year's game:

- Simulation handling model, kind of like what Dirt 4 had when you could choose the handling model between simulation and an arcade one. The current handling model could be the arcade one and then they could make a simulation handling model that could be used in the eSports races etc..

- Inclusion of GP3 and F2, it would be great to start your career in GP3 and progress through F2 and eventually F1. I suspect it's a licencing question, but still it would be nice to see the junior classes represented in the game.
