F1 2018 sounds

thank you for taking time to answer. i'm a bit confused because it has same distinct rumbling growl while shiting down under engine braking as the honda in your 2016 game.

however irl the Ferrari has more a low deep growl that nicely blends with the engine tone.
it a shame because everything els sounds good the engine tone, upshift and turbo are on point.
Hi @Cap10, this year we have spent 100s of hours going over our recordings and experimenting with new methods of producing our audio effects to make our cars sound the closest to real life as they ever have. It's definitely not the 2016 McLaren sound, but they are similar.

It seems all manufacturers this year have sounds that occur under off-throttle/coasting conditions, so we replicated them and got them playing back in-game. See the youtube video I've attached for reference for the Ferrari power-unit growl. All the manufacturers have unique sounds for gearshift/clutch, and the growling.

https://youtu.be/ZxOeq_mSedQ?t=2m3s

however from the t-cam or onboard it does not sound like this.
it very subtle light growl. why use the recorded external sound from track side cam for onboard sound?? is not the right way to make it sound right it makes it sound weird and strange as this sound is good for the replay cam not onboard.

Onboard sounds aren't that great in real life due to mic placement. Codies record sounds directly from the engines I believe.

@UP100

Yes i agree mate, but shouldn't the basic tone and sfx of the cars be at least "somewhat" close to the real life TV-Broadcast in that case, especially as for example @issueskid & @davidjgurney thankfully shared the very interesting info that they do indeed use a similar mic placement as the fellas from TV and that they have spent at least 100's of hours to try and replicate the audio as close as possible?

If that has been officially, and undoubtedly, confirmed, how come the unique turbo whistle whine of both the Renault engines and Mercedes engines are completely missing and or that the unique 2nd turbo whine of the 2018 Ferrari engines wasn't even in the audio design to begin with or the fact that the audio mix for the bottoming out plank scraping sound sfx seems to be way too silent even if it only occurs if the car physically touches the tarmac in a realistic way?

Hopefully they will be able to improve the sound even further to the point that it actually sounds just like on TV for the T-Cam angle, though for Cockpit Cam (Muffled sound?) and or Offboard Replays (trackside recordings?) the sound obviously needs to be done in a different manner.

Let's hope for the best.

Here's a link to a compilation of all real life onboard T-Cam footages of the 2018 season as a reference for the audio:

I would also like to add the engine revs need to be improved. as I always mentioned in the past they are too weak when you hit the limiter it sounds weak should be more intense and aggressive. just like you hear them irl in quali mod the engine sounds are more intense compared to race mode and this does not reflect in the game.
as well as just sitting there on idle and reving the engine you should be able to sense the power.

Here's some Mercedes Gameplay (starts at 0:40).

I have to say i don't get the same level of excitement that i get when hearing the Ferrari for this years game.

That actually sounds a lot more like the real car than I thought it would with a direct comparison, pretty impressive. The real point of discussion here I think, is that those two cars are supposed to be the same shade of silver..

thats so awesome that you guys who working on the sound are give such infos to us.
too bad that the other codie guys are not that active here. There are so much questions about the safety car and so on and nothing get a response.

I can't speak for other teams here but we in audio do a lot of reading on youtube, games media sites and the forum and we do try and reply where possible. We have to strike a fine balance though between answering questions and not giving too much away and also taking on feedback but understanding that we can't fit everything in or please everybody.

You wouldn't believe how much work is involved with each game's development from an audio point of view. It's certainly not a "copy and paste" as many fans would make out with a yearly iterative game :).

Yes it's alright. The downshifting needs still attention, but i know they said they're looking into it. For me the Merc enginge has these punchy downshift sounds and i noticed immediately that they are missing.

Like @issueskid said earlier it is also down to how playtesters perceive the sound. Whilst a completely authentic sound might work for some it can be a huge turn off for others. I remember in 2016 there was a really high pitched sound in the Toro Rosso I believe which made it unplayable to me... I reckon this goes for a lot of others as well..

Yeah, that was probably the new menu option we implemented in '16 specifically to remove high pitched whines. We didn't want to remove it completely because half of the players liked it and half hated it! As you can understand though its not exactly easy to add stacks of menu options and unique mixes to cater for everybody, this is why we tend to spend a lot of time reading feedback and figuring out what the best option is.

That example in particular though had a menu option added as the whine was actually authentic, it was present on a lot of the cars in broadcast footage so we replicated it pretty much exactly as it was on TV.

of course we know it not an easy task and takes lot of work and you guys are passionate about f1. we are just trying to help out and give feedback how to improve the audio fidelity to have it as close as possible sounding like the real thing.

I feel that the audio part is very important to get it right because it help the whole experience and make it that more immersive. audio fidelity is very important as it give the player better experience as well as a feedback btween the player and the car. so everything thing counts from engine tone, revs ,rev limiter, downshifts ,engine braking ,coasting, plank scrapes (bottoming out), tire grip, kerb vibration ect..
is very important to get all things sound right and in sync with the car.

I'm very passionate about F1 and wish your f1 games would sound right and near perfect, and every year i'm quite disappointed with the sounds however I can see improvements are made year after year.
there are still a lot of things that need more attention and improvements.

hope you guys have made big steps in f1 2018.

I have been watching this thread daily and it's amazing the response from everyone, including the dev team.

I have a question, if possible, can you guys tell us if the replay sounds are improved? I just saw a YouTube video from aarava with race/replay and the replay sounds are weird because when the cars fly by..the sound almost seems to cut off after the car goes by..it doesn't extend like it should.

where is the bangs crackling pops the cars make when they downshifts??

Yeah was the same video I saw, the replay sounds off..like there is no reverb, pops or raw growl downshifting and after the fly by, the cars go silent...it's weird..very weird

We like to read all the comments, and reply to them when we have time. :)

For sure. The replay sound set is improved. Just compare F1 2017 to the F1 2018 video, then watch some of the 2018 trackside race videos on YouTube. The replay sounds in F1 2018 are the real thing and curated from hundreds of hours of recordings we made in the last 12 months.

You probably noticed that the sound changes when the camera does to match the new position of the "microphone" (it's not quite as simple as that but I'm sure you understand).

where these left out intentionally because you could not make it sound right or a few beta testers did not like it?

First let me acknowledge the fact that Issueskid has taken moments out of his time to interact with us and I greatly appreciate that. I believe you deserve honest feedback. From the video's of the game we have listened to, I must say the Honda sound is rather dissapointing.

I dont want to exagerate but the car sounds rather far from the real thing. As far as i can remember, winter testing was slightly different but again nothing close to what the game is representing. Are the sounds we are hearing a placeholder?  Why is there a total lack of that off throttle satisfying loud downshifting the Honda is famous for? The Ferrari is spot on in my opinion, you hear it and you know exactly what it is. a total contrast of the Honda in the game. Im not being negative for the sake of it, Im just at a loss why there is such a lack of character to the most characterisitc sounding engine in F1 right now.

I just want to say that once again, it's clear we're getting the best audio we've ever gotten in the F1 series. I'm so glad to see that there's a significant improvement to the audio this year! But...It's just a little surprising that this little indie game can do this but the official game can't:

Imagine if we had these camera angles & these sounds in codies F1 games..

the only issue is the camera is too much focus on 1 car, this would not work well with the e-sports series and as an overall replay view. the camera would have to be zoom out to allow to see more of the cars in front & behind.

this would work much better.

how come the audio team can't make the cars sound like this on the tv-cam replay?
this his how it should properly sound..

Which is why they should allow us to choose different replay cameras...Like most racing sims..This is also one thing that kinda annoys me in recent codies F1 games, they have nice multiple replay angles (I love the helicopter cam) but it's random...Why not let us choose which one to watch?

Now we understand lol... No offence issueskid & davidjgurney and the whole team, but you guys need help and advice how to create a proper authentic audio experience  representation of the sport in the game. you should seriously consider hiring some of these talented modders.

the simple fact that you guys have access to unique recording and can't really put it all together to make it sound like the real thing it very disappointing. compared to what these modders are capable of achieving with less resources it a much more complete authentic sounding experience.
