What are your opinions on "Young driver test" for career mode?

Recommended Posts

So I'm playing F1 2013 right now and at the beginning of the career, you have to take a young driver test, which is essentially a tutorial, but depending on how well you do in the tutorial, you get better contract offers for the start of your career

To me, this seems brilliant and I wish it had remained in future games, making career progression that much better since I can't just start with a good car (I started on Williams btw) but obviously others might feel differently about this.

So what are your thoughts on this? Did you like it or hate it? Do you wish it will come back or wish it doesn't? I'd like some arguments for and against this and some perspective.

Thank you for the fair discussions.

I liked the challenge of working my way up from the back in all the earlier games and that they had that all the way through 2010 through 2013 but I can understand why CM changed that because some people didn't like the idea of being restricted at the start but at least you still have a challenge because if you do pick a top team they'll be expecting you to be on the pace right from the off. I personally prefered the older system as I'm more a guy that likes to earn his place at a top team if I'm to race in one not just be given it but I can also see why it was changed

I kind of liked the idea, but when it comes to the team you start with I believe it's always best to give people an option. I can imagine some don't want to go through multiple seasons of driving for a lower tier team before they can start competing for podiums and race wins, as some people don't intend to do that many races at all but maybe still want to experience the career mode.

On the flip side if you do like that challenge, we still have the option to do it, once you've made your decision you still have to earn the better contracts so it's not that different really. It's a bit like instant replays, you don't have to use them if you don't like them.

Its a good idea but after awhile its a grind. For example I used to like earning my seat but what I do now is whatever contract options I get in my last career season I pick from those teams on a new game. Be good if the games could bring forward your previous stats so your not always a rookie.

In reality, most of the drivers come from a junior programm of top teams (Red Bull junior team, Ferraris Driver Academy or Mercedes stuff). What I mean is that drivers are actual related to a team before they actually drive for them. I would like to see this feauture added, because at the moment it uis simply no matter what team you join and you could also switch to each team, no matter where you actually drive. So let's say you do your YDT for RedBull, then you have best chances to join Toro Rosso and later it's easier to join RB than from another team. Or you take your YDT in Ferrari, which makes it easiert to join Sauber and then Ferrari. So just that you are in a kind of "family" like in reality, that would be awesome!

I still wish there was an option for a ydt and you don't have to do it if you don't want. And if u do decide to the ydt, if you join a team like toro rosso, you'll be more likely to get an rbr contract later on in career. Also make it so that you don't get every slow team interested in you, and uses the same kinda system that they have for career mode now with characteristics and stuff.

I got gold on most tests and silver on the rest. Unlocked all teams but Lotus, but I wanted the one below it for some reason.

My issue, is not knowing what the hell I'm doing after starting a career. Like, seriously the last true racing game I played was NASCAR on PS2.

I started one race. Went a couple laps, noticed it wasn't counting, noticed people kept passing me some how (Better times), and then noticed there was 50 minutes left.

I enjoyed that for sure as I did the tests in F1 2006. Anything needing to prove or work at a team is good but I also like how its open for any team too. Drivers don't all start in Sauber or Toro Rosso, drivers have multiple sponsors and can be managed by teams like McLaren or Ferrari so its also quite realistic that you can pick to go straight for a top team, but the path to get it however is a good idea to look into, a path to proving worth or passing tests to get their interest is a good way to start a career with your favourite teams.
