PS4 Pro and 4K TV......?

Recommended Posts

Can anyone tell me if this will be any better than using the standard PS4 w/4K TV? ...Reason for asking is, I am contemplating moving from XB1/S and the graphics are wonderful but the lack of options for accessories  and chat is a  difficult thing (yes I have a Kinect and adapted for XB 1 S) but still a PITA.
If the graphics on the standard PS4 are no better/worse than a PS4 Pro, I may just opt for that as the Pro is next to impossible to find...without being gouged!.....I  think the 4K feature on the Pro is only for games produced in 4K, so is the F1 2017-18 in 4K?

Any input is appreciated! Thnx!

Depends on the TV and how far away are you playing. Look at this picture.
As you can see, you need to be really close for 4k to get all you can get from it and it also depends how big your TV is. Imo is not worth it going from standard to Pro PS4, some say it is, I just don't see it. If money is not the issue then sure, go for it if not, you won't miss out on much.

I upgraded to a Pro and just like upgrading the PS3 to a 4 you notice the difference more if you go back! But the colour and picture are much more clear and sharp, only trouble I have is sometimes when switching HDMI source on TV the graphics options on my Pro will go SD! I have to take out the HDMI lead or turn the TV off and back on then its fine, it isn't too good at understanding the ports, HDMI slot 1 is 2.0 whereas the other 3 slots are 1.4 which is a huge difference. I also had to turn off the HDCP 2.2 as its incompatible, my TV is only  2 years old but most systems still don't even support 2.2 yet. So I watch Netflix on TV and play games on Pro.. (HDCP is a copyright protection program so you turn it off you can no longer watch Netflix etc. You can Google TVs that are most notorious for communicating to the PRO and vice versa).
Also you can't watch discs in 4k on the Pro, but that is mostly due to Sony apparently working on 4k players, they don't want to add a free one on the Pro :( You'll have to use USB sticks etc to copy and watch movies in 4k direct to your TV.
So basically for the Pro you do get better quality in games, its a plus but mostly its the added performance and more powerful internet connection you'll get that will be the best part, Skyrim shows more distance detail and faster frame rates and GTA online is much more smooth even if your provider isn't so good for example. My Pro is twice as fast at downloading updates over my standard PS4, if not faster! Online play is much less laggy, only lag I have had in GTA is when I was doing missions and a guy with terrible lag jumped in my car, it was like getting a virus! Booted him out and it was fine again!

@ChironTheseus .... Great info, Thanks! I agree on the lack of 4K disc use as Sony does not wish to hurt their BR player market. Just based on the power the Pro has over the regular I assumed there is some improvements but I doubt so much so to pay 200 dollars more.

Interesting how you say that the Online Lag in Games and even downloads are faster on the Pro vs normal PS4.

Without anything different on the ISP Speed side , I dont understand how this can be possible.

Any theories ?

I have a 55" TV and I play racing games sitting fairly close to it. Going from 1080p to 4K (even if it's based on a checker-boxing algorithm) made a very noticeable difference in F1 2017. All the stuff that's far away in the distance from you looks a lot sharper with 4K due to more pixels being able to draw it.

Different WiFi implementation? It's a good point. I've not looked at the specs, but I know the one x had issues with WiFi card after all the downsizing into a smaller form

I would move to the Xbox One X. It's a much bigger step up in graphics and performance, and you also get a 4K blu ray player as well as support for 120Hz, VRR, and Dolby Vision.

I have considered the One X, but happy with the S as is, but my materialistic side wants a BT SIM display only available on PS4, not too mention it appears to be more options for league play, less complicated chat.

Yeah I only upgraded when I found one on offer, was the Fortnite bundle, I don't play that game but it was cheaper with that than the Pro on its own lmao! Go figure ;) My PS4 original has been dying anyway I think, it revs up very hard and sounds like its struggling so that was worth it for me, already have a 2GB HDD to put into the Pro then I'm all set, still waiting for the slim HDD to come down in price though, want bigger still. I am getting used to having PSN games so no playing around with discs or waiting, but you can store next to nothing on a 1TB! I still don't get why they aren't adding more there too, they push for PS Store game sales but its still inconvenient to only have a handful of games ready to play. But then maybe not everyone is like me? I can't play just one game until its complete then delete it, I like replaying or just lasting the experience of some games.
