Chat option in GRID Autosport!!

Recommended Posts

Strange really......PC has been banded as the 'lead platform' this time, and text chat is probably one of the most requested features by the PC section.  Yet if it isn't included, the reasoning would be......because its surplus to requirements on the consoles.

i dont think youd want to imagine that lol!

but no, we didnt have ever more than 3 ppl in one server in g1 as i recall spamming chat with constant messages.
prolly a similar number of voice spammers on g2...but like i said earlier, its way more intrusive.

It's really really hard to imagine there's no "room" for a text chat.
Txt doesn't demand much hardware, ram etc etc.

I can't imagine CM can't code that easily if it's not "ready-to-copy" from another program.

Left are very little reasons not to include it - unless someone wants to play Daddy ("no, because I say so")
I hope the teams of programmers, directors, managers etc dare to put it on anyway.

All,

We very much know how important text chat is to you, it remains something we're still talking about so by all means it isn't a 100% a no. Discussions are still taking place and as always, I'll be sure to fire this thread over to the team to further illustrate the desire to have the feature in the game.

Voting in this thread says enough, what do team say about it @Loore ??

Yeah i know im crazy but if codies dont implement txt chat into the game i would glady pay for it later as a dlc if thats possible instead of cars and tracks that i dont want or need
DLC is sh**. Ppl need full, ready to use game. Succes of DLC can be only if company support their games for years, so ppl know they give money for a long time. But its not about Codies, so much games have closed/unpluged cable. Yeah, games is cool but they leave it or even kill it (

Don't really see the point in it. If your playing online surely you should have a headset after all they dont cost much for a cheap set and when you have 8 people texting away convo's become a mess imho. What I want to see is voice chat even when the next race is loading. Kinda get pissed off getting cut off in the middle of a sentence when the loading screen comes up.

PC text chat does not do this to your ears!!
NFS: The Run need a mic mute for online racing!!

I do use a headset and mic, but I use it through my second computer and Teamspeak. I just hear the voices of the guys in my headset and I can still hear the sound of racing game through my 5:1 surrond sound speaker system. :)

Text chat can't be that hard to do. Bugbear done it for Next Car Game, Refract for Distance ( only about 5 Devs ), Gamepires has done it for Gas Guzzlers Extreme ( in lobby and while doing deathmatches\races ), also has VOIP, but not many use it:

No update as of yet, it's still being discussed and any possibilities worked out.

Regarding selling it as DLC, I wouldn't like us to go down that route (and I don't think we would).

Its better than a no i guess.
But time is running oh so short for you guys no?

Loore, can you tell us if theres a [semi]working alpha/beta version with chat running, going on at your studios yet?..or is it really just on the drawing board still?

Thx

It's a shame Satine closed LaPremier's thread because he described the typical issues online players have to deal with, in Codies games.

And in OP he quoted a steam G2 discussion where Loore admits:
Text chat came very close to being included in the Community patch but unfortunately it just didn't work out. We'll keep investigating and seeing what we can do regarding that.

I think i remember him saying that here on previous forums too.

Seems like the new game was a perfect opportunity for carrying out the promise.

But still no news about text chat.

Text chat. Because half the fun is not just the race. It's about talking about the race. And the more possibilities to talk the better.

Also it is just a great way to de stress the players. If you smash someone up. Most of the time if you hit someone eveyone knows whose fault it is. But if you can say sorry everyone can move on from that and it keeps everyone happier.

Whereas if you can't, the person who feels wronged just feels angry and may go on their own ramming mission, which just increases the problem and turns the game into a ram fest. More methods of communication=less chance of this happening=better experience for everyone.

I read this as it is a question of "politics" only and not at all if it is possible or not because of hardware, coding etc.
Okay, so who is Mr. Bad Guy keeping it away from the game(s) ?

I guess noone expect a "first time chat" to be with votes of kicking or restarts, colors etc etc.
Just a simple chat really, maybe showing at high top of the screen for 4-5 sec.
Make a keyboard shortcut (like "C" in Race 07)  and press Enter to get it on the screen + ability to turn it off somewhere in options.
Done - ( and you can always update it if you get bored later on :O) )

But - why isn't this easy for you guys (Codemasters) to decide really?

Totally agree about the defusing of a situation. Had that experience many times when I used to game on a PC with older CM game. Now that I'm gaming on a last gen console we have zero possibility of text chat. Even a few select phrases we could choose from would be better than nothing (like BF4's commo rose) seem to remember something like that in an older CM game. I'm one of the majority who rarely / never use voice chat online for all the reasons stated in this thread.

I've been wondering about this myself.  Do Codemasters think we want something super flash with multi possibilities.....no idea, but I think when 'we' think of chat, all we want is something 'simple', to work exactly as you describe.  The closest we've had to an explanation (from Loore) is that console owners don't use keyboards.  We don't need to go into all that again, but hopefully CM will understand all we're asking for is this 'simple' chat option.  I think there's always a danger of over thinking/designing something.

+1, good post.

Saying sry online goes a long way to keeping tempers clam down. Just make sure you are not saying sry in the chat window after every race!!!!

I have seen players in GRID 1 get piss-off at someone and drive backwards on the track to hunt player down, if there no collision forward option enabled, causing chaos on the track for the other players trying to race.

I try and keep my cool when racing online, I do not want to be the one to ruin someone else race trying to pay back a guy that knock me off the track. And it may been a "s-it happens" moment, that racing.

Well, many people actually don't have/use headset either, even it's already in the games (audio chat).
At start, I thought it was a great idea when it came out in F1 2012, but I quickly turned it off (as soon as they "invented an option for that which took some time lol)

Some maybe didn't know you could hear everything from the radio to talking with girlfriend, yelling at the dog etc, but many people used it just to annoy  - in best case "to entertain others" with boom bass audio tracks etc.

I see the opportunities in a voice chat, but tbh - in a lobby/race where you might not know people, a text chat is still much to prefer.
TEXT CHAT MIGHT BE OLD FASHIONED COMPARED TO VOICE CHAT BUT IT WORKS! :)
As a clever user in here suggested, it would be even fine with a few shortcuts as "Sorry", "Yes", "No", "&%%?"&¤#&" etc :D

We get that and that's the sort of thing we're looking at. I don't have any update right now but as I said previously, it's something that's being talked about, and in a way that's "we want to do this" type way.

Right now we're focusing all our effort into getting the game finished (we go Gold in about a month!). There's obviously the possibility of patching it in after launch which could well be a route we go down, but again, no guarantees just yet.

Fair enough.

Also (and off topic) good to see my question about lap countdown in the lobby ('waiting room') making it into the Q&A.  So hopefully that is being given serious discussion now or later, for the common sense idea it obviously once was and still is..

naah, no news. I can't understand why is so difficult to add chat option into game. What's so funny, Rust game, even its 500mb game to download (1 gig when its installed) , have so simple chat but so great to use it. I meet so many players there, using chat we became steam friends, we invite each other every day an sometimes we just talk in game.Good thing is that u can actually talk with unknown people and say what u think, u can say u are sorry , u can warn them , u talk about game....With steam chat u can only do this with your friends.Game have voice chat also we use it sometimes when things go really fast and dangerous. So, chat is so good and needed option in any game, I have only one conclusion, cm guys probably don't know how to make it.There is no other explanation...

Definitely want text chat in the game, yes swearing can be and is often a problem but then it always HAS been, even with mics it was still a problem.

It's important to be able to communicate, I remember an instance in Grid 2 where I caused an accident and wanted to apologise and sent a friend request to a player in order to do so, All I heard was the guy laughing his head off about the request along with a sting of abuse and I got kicked from the session.

Hardly fair as I was wanting to make things right and got a gob full of verbal abuse for my trouble.

The only way to counter bad language imo, would be to display players age groups in the lobby, then we would all be aware when there are kids playing and act accordingly. Of course this relies on people using common sense and decency but we can hope can't we?

Probably way to late to add that kind of thing but it might be worth pushing for future titles to include such a thing

Well it been almost a month now. Would think GRID A has gone gold or or very close to going gold. Look like there will be no text chat for PC players online.  :-w

I guess I will have to wait for a Steam summer sale to buy GRID Autosport and see if PC online community starting to die off already since the online community won't be able to do much talking online when most PC players will turn VOIP off. :(

It going be a big shame if Codemasters get game play\handling of GRID Autosport right this go around, but see online die an early death, because of some bad decisions again for online part of GRID A. :-S

I'm lucky, I already know some good GRID 1 online players and will be able to hookup with them If I buy GRID Autosport. But for the first time GRIDers ( like I was back in 2008 ), they will have a tougher time finding good players to race online. And if the playlist turns into a griefers happy playground, many newbies to GRID looking for a good race, will be driven away before they can find some great racing that can be had with good players online.

Six months from now, will we see posts like this?

"GRID Autosport a good offline racer, but online, if looking for some good racing with good players, you may want to look elsewhere. "

So after a 5 lap race were you and 2 other guys finish within a second of each other and you take 1st, you would not want to say "vgr"?

Little things like that help make online a more friendly place and help give online longevity. You do want to go online next summer and still have loads of online PC players racing?

GRID 1 did it and Flatout 2 did it and I think chat text help with that:

Here the latest news on Empire Interactive:

Zoo Publishing Snags Empire Interactive Licenses

Zoo Publishing announced a deal to license, publish, and distribute the catalog of titles previously published and developed by, the now defunct, Empire Interactive, allowing it to re-release previous Empire titles, to port previously released games to new platforms, and to create a new gaming content from existing IPs.

Well Flatout 2 online server still working, there over 500 players online right now:

That 500 online players, that not counting offline players like Steam stats show for GRID 2 ( offline and online ), but does not show how many are online players:  :(

What's more amazing is the fact you switched off the servers for PC and PS3 after 3 years.  Grid was the game that got me into racing games.

I met some first class people and had some amazingly close races with the likes of CAHEK, Dannyboy, Data, G1edson and all of the angel guys, to name but a few.  The balance of racing and socialising (text chat) was excellent and the community was largely fair, after 1.3 ;)

The midnight tourers was always the place to be.  Although I only played a few of these, the racing was bumper to bumper for the full 5 laps.  There was plenty of rubbing but it was all clean racing.

I also miss the eBay series, taking the Viper around San Fran.  Smashing over the kerbs, just missing the walls to get the best run up the hill.

The epicness of F3 racing, against the likes of Data and CAHEK and giving them a run for their money.  Always tight, always fair, always very entertaining.  Coming out of a race with your heart beating like a 200bpm gabba track, pipped to the finish line by the nostril hair of a flea..

That's what I miss about Grid, and truly hope CM get it right with GAS.  Do not forget that text chat, it's what online game communities are built on.

Loore said:

Hi all,

Just a quick update on this. It was unfortunate that the fix for repair costs and playlist changes didn't quite make it into the last patch, this was because all the fixes were complete after all the changes had been 'checked in' (the point of no return basically).

Work has already started on the next set of patches and I can confirm that fixes for the repair costs as well as changes to the playlists are currently scheduled to go in.

We'll bring you more news as the patch develops, along with a release date once everything is locked in place.

Hi Loore, any chance of Codemasters confirming text chat will finally be patch into a GRID Autosport?

Also, should I assume if text chat won't make it in next patch, then text chat will never make it into GRID Autosport?

One thing we don't do is deliberately set out to not put a feature in that we know you want, in fact, it's quite the opposite. In terms of features we're always pushing to get things in but sometimes the alignment just isn't there.

Text chat is important to us, we know it's a much requested feature and it's not something we've forgotten about by any means. Right now the team are incredibly busy finishing the game, it's not a time when you want to be adding a new feature into the code as it's a time for bug fixing and polish. We finish work on it in just a few weeks time and then it's off to manufacturer and shipping.

I want to be able to tell you "yes it's coming", but right now we're not in the place to do that. It's one of the things at the top of my feedback list.

Its Friday, still no word from Loore if text chat is in in the next patch. :(

At this time, no. I'm hoping it will make it into a future patch but it's unlikely at this time, sorry.

This is second patch for GAS, if Codies not taking the time to add text chat now, doubt it will happen. We might see a 3rd PC patch some day, then I think that will be it for patches. Codemasters will move on to working on DIRT 4.

I see Project Cars can be pre-order now and going get release in November. I did a Google search and it look like text chat is in for Pcars. :)

A text chat profanity filter has been added to the in-game multiplayer chat

I'm wondering if I should just pass on GRID Autosport and save my money for Pcars? GRID Autosport may be the only PC racing game release this year without text chat for online.

too late i am afraid for that... :( i hope the next codies game to include
-text chat
-spectating mode
-steam region free
These are the 3 reasons why GAS has few players online at least in custom lobbies on PC.. :(

and i thing the most important of these 3 is the steam region free.. i can live waiting for the race to finish , i can communicate with microphone if i want but the reason that many times i leave GAS and i play an other game is the poor number of custom lobbies  that have good settings  ( playlist is bloody boring for me )

That's 100% RED alert for Codies :)

Come on guys , is it really hard to bring that back into the game??Is it that hard to make?

3 things u must have in racing game to be popular as first GRID was,!!
CM , add those 3 things in next game, u'll have a huge success , and for once, Listen to your fans.Who cares about DLC-s they only split the community in half, change your politics in next racing game and u will see ...

nah, we need it here. i ll not buy next game. i better buy grid1 again if there just be online, coz there we have more competitive gameplay depending on skills only (but this is another story :D) .
chat is not so hard to do like modeling, texturing, animating and physic settings.
its just few hours of coding and testing for a while.
cm will spend more time for waiting to patch apply than coding.
are they code masters or excuse masters after all?
i really believe loore can drill devs' head.

Would be nice but yeah think it's a bit late to be added in (although certainly not impossible). My PC usually takes longer to load than everyone else in a lobby and whilst looking at loading screens the voice chat is either extremely choppy or just plain cuts out meaning people get annoyed at me not answering them when it's because I never even knew they said anything :p Text chat would solve this for me at least
