My disappointment with the Codemasters F1 games (a list of problems in F1 2018)

Recommended Posts

I'm just going to make a small list of problems in F1 2018. Consider it an open letter for codies. Hopefully at least some of them will be fixed with a patch. Personally I am a league racer and have played all F1 games by codies. I race with no assists on 108 difficulty and I use the T150 wheel. I play on a standard PS4.
AI
  • is too fast in qualifying. This is blatantly obvious and you guys at codemasters must already know this.
  • get too good starts compared to myself. I have tried everything but i keep losing places because AI has traction control and they have no wheelspin off the line.
  • is too aggressive. They tend to stick their nose in at every chance without getting alongside. No real F1 driver would do this as it just causes crashes. It's nice to see that you made the AI more aggressive but of course you had to overstep the line.
  • It's cool that the AI battle a lot with each other but they slow down a lot as a result and it's close to a point of ridiculousness. You could tone it down a little bit.
  • get mechanical faults too often. Why cant you make it an option that players can get mechanical faults?
  • Are really quick on certain tracks and slow on others. This has been a problem in every F1 game so far.
Other
  • There are a lot of small framerate drops in-game and lots of performance issues. You need to sort it out. It can cause mistakes and ruined laps.
  • The force feedback is awful. Much worse compared to F1 2017. The wheel feels very heavy in low speed corners and direction changes are difficult to make. On the contrary, in the high speed corners there is little to no ffb. Shouldn't it be the opposite? It's really difficult to adjust it and get the perfect FFB.
  • Lots, lots of multiplayer bugs... In my first online game i couldn't see anyone's gamertag. When i left the lobby, the game got stuck in the "downloading content" process. Restarting the game often fixes a bug that happens.
  • When searching custom lobbies, there is a bug that stops me from scrolling down.
  • Why does using ABS still make you faster? I'm remember codies acknowledged this when the youtubers were beta testing for F1 2017. They said they had made the assists too perfect. It's weird that this hasn't yet been fixed...
  • Why do we see the F1 2017 beta testers faces everywhere. Dont you have any other people scanned? This could have been made into a nice easter egg where you could maybe see Ben once.
  • Practice programmes are too difficult. You have to put in crazy hotlaps to reach the expected time. It should be about getting to grips with the track.
The thing is, the F1 2018 could be great instead of just good if codies just focused on polishing the game and fixing the small problems. The game has a good basis. The handling is great and I have great respect for Greco and the work he has done but everyone needs to get their heads down in order to improve the game. I recommend watching Jimmy Broadbents video of things that needs to be fixed in F1 2018, he made some good points.

When I noticed how fast the AI is in quali I wondered; didn't codies test the game or did they notice this but were they too lazy to fix it? Same applies with some obvious glitches. Seriously.

Thank you so much for this, it really helped me decide not to buy the game for now

On the topic of the Force Feedback. Have you tried turning the Wheel Damping right the way down, try maybe setting it to 0 and then introduce it in very small amounts to your desired weight to the wheel. It doesn’t behave in the same way the Wheel Weight setting did in previous games which also caught me out at first when I tried the game with a wheel.  Hope that helps :)

Personally the first 3 points about the AI I don't agree with. We asked to make the AI better from last years game and I feel they've done just that. It's much more exciting for me racing against aggressive AI as oppose to following a train and not having to defend much. Have you tried lowering the AI difficulty?
  • Are really quick in tracks and slow on others. This has been a problem in every F1 game so far.
Explain? Is it all AI or certain drivers? Could just be you're better at certain tracks?

Lots, lots of multiplayer bugs...

But you've only listed 2?

Aha so wheel damping is the new wheel weight? :)

aside from all AI being pre-monaco Max Verstappens, they have done nothing with the AI.
they still make the same bonehead choices as 15,16 and 17.

This is the AI
"its about to rain" .. better pit for dry tires, only to pit again in a couple laps for inters/wets.
"track is almost dry" ... better pit for new inters, only to pit again for drys in a couple laps.
"erk I knocked my front wing off" ..better pit for a new one and a set of new tyres, but I'll KEEP my ORIGINAL pit strategy, often in a couple laps.
"Safety car is on track and I'm close to my pit stop" ..I'll just continue on and keep my original pit strategy, often just after the SC ends.

all of these things ruin the race (in single player).  racing is about fighting for your position. not having places handed to you because
you unlike 'a computer' (oh the irony) can figure out if the track is about to be dry, you are better off waiting the lap or two, or the bingle that lost you your front wing buggered your race strat, so I should adjust it.
Jeff, your computer program engineer even says we need to change the strat cos of this mishap, but the AI, controlled by the same computer program, doesn't).

Kind of yes, but it seems to behave very differently. When I first tried F1 2018 I copied my settings from F1 2017 assuming it was the same. Ended up experiencing what you described with it near on impossible to steer at slow speeds, kind of like a car with no power steering.
I ended up dropping it to 0 which instantly felt amazing and somewhat comparable to the SF70H in Assetto Corsa using my G29.
Would personally try lowering it all the way down and then introducing very small amounts of it in small increments, maybe in 5s depending on how much resistance you want to the handling.

What I seemed to find is that if the Wheel Damping effect is too high then it definitely overpowers the Force Feedback reducing the feeling in the cars that you expect to get from the Force Feedback.

Dont get me wrong, just like all games these days F1 2018 does need a few patches refining a few things before it is perfect, but for me I’m really loving the new game. The upgraded visuals, engine audio as well as more immersive career already make the game a huge step forward compared to previous games.
I can’t comment on the state of online gameplay though as I purely play offline and more career mode focussed. I would expect though that there are probably a few things that need working on in that area of the game as it tends to be where a lot of the problems lay.

hope that helps :)

I do kind of agree that maybe the race pace needs upping a bit. On my difficulty setting I seem to really struggle in qualifying with Williams as well as with some of the practice programmes but when it comes to the actual race I seem to manage to finish around 14th-15th regularly without too much pressure despite starting from last place (where I kind of expect to qualify with the underpowered car compared to the other teams)

Your AI issues sound like you need to turn your difficulty down. This is what most of us wanted the AI to do!

Try turning the AI down if you're experiencing difficulties.
Don't think it's necessary. For example, I couldn't match others times in quali in Australia with the Toro Rosso and started last but I was just as quick as them in the race, finishing P11. Also, if you look at F1 youtubers career videos you can see that they too usually struggle in qualifying.

While some people say they are fast at quali but slow at race...

Lol did you expect me to put up a list of multiplayer glitches? Just go check out the technical assistance page. Hopefully this game doesn't have major glitches in the like of the tyre wear glitch in F1 2016 or the slipstream and default setup glitch in F1 2017. Oh, an let's not forget the safety car glitch in F1 2017...
