Race Start help

Recommended Posts

I am new to F1 games and I am having issues with my race starts. What is the Race Start Assist exactly supposed to do? How should I approach the race start if I have the Assist enabled? Should I have the gas already down as the lights go off? Or should I wait for lights to go off and THEN press the gas pedal? Any help is appreciated. Right now I am racing with a Toro Rosso and I am easily losing 5-7 positions on race starts alone.
Thanks.

Race start assist means that you don't have to shift when the lights go out, you can just push the throttle and it will start racing directly after lights go off. Without the assist however it's best not to put it on 100% throttle but somewhere around 50% so you don't have that much wheelspin. Depending on whether you drive with Traction Control on or off this might also apply to you.

If you don't have the "Race Start Assist" enabled then you have to hold the gear up paddle/button as a clutch, then release it when the lights go out. So the assist removes that and so the car goes when the lights go out.

Throttle should applied before the lights go out.

That's what I've been trying to do, but other cars are just much faster than me, and so I lose multiple positions. Could it be that the Toro Rossos are just that much slower at the start? I'll give a try again today.

Are you running full Traction Control?

If so you need to change the car setup (the one after the aero settings) with the locked/unlocked setting with the 50% - 100% setting, lower it closer to 50% to stop the car bogging down with too much Traction

Yes I am. I'll give your suggestion a try tonight. Thanks

Let us know if it works - I'm convinced it has helped me, so if someone else confirms it works then I know its not just me convincing myself in my head!!!!

Also should find that it helps with accelerating out of slow corners too. Means you can turn AI difficult up which in turn means you dont have to dive bomb AI in to every corner.

Also, if you have assist turned off, you cant just hammer down when the lights go off.  You have to kinda feather the throttle for a half second until you "feel" the rear end hook up. Then rocket ship power after that.

I'll give that a try too. I use manual starts in Project Cars 2, so it shouldn't be that much different.

Use manual starts.  Its much more satisfying.  If you can do them in PC2 you can get it in F1 2018 no problem.  Just takes a little practice.  I wish there was an option to just practice race starts over and over.

There is actually a way to practice starts.  Pick a track set up a race then keep using the "restart session" option and it will provide good practice.

So changing the TC from Full > Medium did for me. I was able to start the race at a good pace.
Interestingly enough, it also made me faster overall! I was able to decrease my lap times by almost 2 seconds!! Now I have to increase the difficulty.
Thanks again
