(PC) Cant resume a race that was saved mid-session??

OK so im halfway through a GP at Spa and I saved the session and exited the game.. When i go back to the game and RESUME..it takes me to the track and I see the options to rewind / fast forward / photo mode etc but when I try to press ESC to resume the race nothing happens. I have tried all the buttons on my wheel and on the keyboard but nothing.
