Dirt Rally or Dirt 4 ?

Recommended Posts

Me and a mate are both looking at buying one of the above from the current Steam sale and looking for some help in deciding.   Cost is similarish so not a real factor unless no other deciding factors.  We are both in our 40's and can only play a little after work every now and then.  Looking to perhaps play the odd game of multiplayer if possible.  Apart from that, both looking to do a bit of career mode.  Doesn't need to be the most realistic sim however not after an arcade game either.

Is there much difference between the two of these ?

Both are pretty good, but both have their downsides.

DiRT Rally is the bigger challenge personally, and I would recommend this one. But DiRT 4 has better multiplayer (DR doesn't have any multiplayer for rally stages). It's hard to say how you'll feel about the two very different stage systems, so I'd ask yourself the following questions:

- Do you prefer 70s RWD cars or modern 4WDs + FWDs? If the former, go for DR, if the latter go for D4.
- If simultaneous multiplayer rallying is important to you, then go for D4.

DiRT Rally - Pros
Better stages (IMO) - they're hand-crafted and iconic.
Better handling on the ground and gravel.
Prefer the career mode (IMO) - a caveat that this is very personal preference; the AI is super challenging and you won't win rallies often unless you're very good, getting podia is an achievement.
Pacenotes are superb, very detailed.
Pike's Peak and hillclimb mode (I'm happy it's not in the future ones, but it's a 'Pro' if it interests you).

DiRT Rally - Cons
The cars have no 'weight', Finland is basically broken because the cars fly twice as far in their air as in real life.
You can learn the stages and thus not listen to the pacenotes after a few runnings (especially useful for that one corner in Greece with completely the wrong note!).

DiRT 4 - Pros
Stages are infinite combinations, but they're a mix of the same 20-30 corners in different orders. And those corners are less challenging.
The cars have weight, tarmac physics are better. I personally prefer the 4wd physics.
Multiplayer rallies.
A couple of extra RX venues.
Very limited livery editor.

DiRT 4 - Cons
Stages are infinite combinations, but they're a mix of the same 20-30 corners in different orders. And those corners are less challenging.
RWD class is basically broken IMO. If you want fun with the '70s cars you have to go for DR.
Again, this is personal preference, but the career mode is so disjointed it's no fun.
The AI are impossible to beat in some classes and super easy in others. I think the 'random stages' and the AI don't mix personally.

Dirt rally is meant to be a sim and therefor not easy.

Dirt4 is no arcade game but not as hardcore as dirt rally. I think for what you desire it is the better choice.

Seeing as they would only play a little occasionally and purely for fun I would say Dirt 4 since it has both "gamer" & "sim" physics. So it can be tweaked much more to suit your playstyle.
Dirt Rally has a steep and long learning curve that needs more time and effort to be put in to master, so short and occasional play sessions won't really be enjoyable.
