Key sound element needed for DR2 - general road noise

Recommended Posts

Hi all, one thing about DR that I felt was missing was a general sound of the car interacting with the road surface, not just incidentally as in tyre squeals and bumps etc, but the more general road sound ('roar'?) that you get when driving. It felt to me that there was something 'missing', a tangible sound as well as just the engine noise and incidentals. Does this make sense to anyone? The in-car video for DR 2.0 (latest footage on youtube) seems to still have this missing...

You don’t hear any road noise from when you’re driving a noisy rally car with no sound proofing, helmets on and a co-driver shouting in your ear.

you can hear the rocks banging the floor
The original post mentions the roar. Which means tyre noise from the road surface. Not general noises like stones bouncing off the car.

You'd be surprised how little you notice the rocks banging the flooor when you’re in stage as you’re too busy concentrating the co-driver and your own driving.

You have rallied in smooth roads, I'm using Stilo DG-10 intercom with themaximum noise cancelling filter and you can hear the rocks smashing the floor (but here in Argentina ruts are really really deep and rocky)
It depends most on the type of gravel, listen an onboard from turkey, acropolis or argentina you will hear the rocks hitting the floor, if you listen in finland, poland you dont listen any sound coming from the floor

I have had a ride twice in a Subaru Impreza N12 in a Finnish special stage (winter and summer) and have to say that the sound of rocks hitting the floor and car body basically drowns the engine sounds away when the car is sideways. Braking and accelerating are moments when the gravel sounds are well audible too so all in all I have to say that you basically hear the gravel clearly all the time in a rally car.

Isn't the N12 Subaru kinda quiet though?
The Group N car definitely is quite quiet. The car I was in was actually a Fin-R -spec car though (closer to R4 than Gr.N) so it was more powerful and louder than Gr.N Imprezas.

A system similar to R3E would be welcome where you can adjust different parameters of the sound to your own liking.

I know you have a few sliders, but more would be nice. One for transmission sound for example.
