Apparently Merc approached Renault over signing Hulkenberg. He wants to go but the team aren't letting him. The other contenders are Alonso, Ricciardo and Werhlein.

I'd love to see Hulk at Mercedes. If he still is unable to score a podium, then just retire mid-season so that Wehrlein can jump in anyway.

Eurgh. I like Hulk and he's a great driver, but we're talking about the same Hulk who has had trouble dealing with Perez over the past few years, right? That doesn't bode well for being a teammate to Lewis.

Ricciardo would be an amazing choice, but there's 0% chance of that happening. You should fire the "source" that told you that Chris.

Is Jordan King also one of those young boring average Brit with rich dad-type like Palmer?

The problem with Ricciardo is he's impossible to hate because of that smile, so even if he beat Hamilton I wouldn't be down.

Palmer's dad was an F1 driver. King's dad owned Sainsbury's, which is one of my favourite background facts about an F1 driver ever.

Yeah...his dad was CEO of Sainsbury's a few years ago

It is a stunning track to look at visually, I think Abu Dhabi nicked their idea of the blue lines for the run off areas!

Obviously the track is up to spec, but I would assume they will have to re-work the pit lane and paddock slightly. As far as I can remember, it's quite a narrow pit lane at the moment, and I don't think it's particularly long either, so maybe they'll do something about that in time for 2018.

Plus they practically have zero capacity for the fans :p It became mostly a test track a fair while back now so I don't think there's many, if any, grandstands atm lol.

You're right, I don't think there is a single one at the moment! Looking at the aerial view though I'd say there's definitely space already to pop a few in, so I can't imagine it'll be too much of an issue getting them in.

Doesn't Bernie own it? Is he paying himself to host the race? Also I wonder if they use the full back straight, what was the testing layout?

I think you're right, yes. Bit of a weird situation! I really hope they do use the full straight. I know it would be about 1.6km long (which is bloody massive), but putting the chicane in would be awful.

I hope they'd use this configuration, just whacked it together on RouteBuilder

So basically the original layout? :p I'm not a fan of the 1.6km straight, mainly because the corner at the end of it is a single line no overtaking right hander. There's no point in such a long straight without having a sharper corner with a heavy braking zone at the end of it.

So this is the layout I'd go for, make the first chicane tighter for more action at the start, and I'd add the corners I chose in the middle of the straight because the first left hander is more likely to generate a move down the inside, which would then become the outside, then the inside again, then the outside again lol. It's more likely to create actual overtakes than one car breezing past another with DRS and a super long straight, which sucks.

This would be sensational, it would then maybe mean Button would race for McLaren next season
