The Formula 1 Stuff Thread

Recommended Posts

Funny how the world works. At the end of 2013, Johnnie Walker offered £43 million per year to be Mclaren's title sponsor on a long term contract. Ron Dennis turned it down because he thought the offer was "too low" (to put that in perspective, Inifniti are the title sponsor of Red Bull for around £19 million per year).

It's difficult to have much sympathy for them when they're run by such an ego driven out of touch clown as Ron Dennis. He's had a fabulous career, and numerous successes, but for once I agree with Eddie Jordan. McLaren won't win championships again as long as the current management structure remains.

1. Other than Mercedes, which teams will win races this year?
Williams, Red Bull. Possibly Ferrari.
2. Who will score more points: Sebastian Vettel or Daniil Kvyat?
Vettel.
3. What will be McLaren’s best result?
Being a Mclaren supporter I want to say 1st. Realistically.... maybe a podium or two in third place if they develop strongly.
4. In what order will the three Mercedes customer teams finish in the constructors’ championship?
Williams, Lotus, Force India
5. Lap times were 1.5 seconds slower on average in 2014 compared to 2013. How much will they change this year?
About a second quicker than last year on average.
6. Which engine manufacturer will score more points: Ferrari or Renault?
Renault but only just.
7. How many points will Sauber score?
Tough one... Around 15 maybe.
8. Who will win the FIA pole position trophy?
Hamilton
9. At which race will Max Verstappen score his first points (if at all)?
Toro Rosso seem to have a habit of scoring in Melbourne and trailing off so I'm going to say the season opener.
10. Aside from Alonso and Magnussen swapping places, who will be the first driver to be replaced or substituted for a race?
The second Manor driver most likely if anyone. I doubt it would happen and I certainly hope it doesn't but if someone did get dropped though I have a horrid feeling it would be Hulkenberg for financial reasons.
11. And who will take their place?
Some pay driver no doubt.
12. Which driver will collect the most penalty points for driving infringements?
No doubt Maldonado is high on peoples lists! I'm going to go with Nasr though.
13. Who will win the Monaco Grand Prix?
Hamilton will no doubt be very hungry for this one with Rosberg winning the last two. Going to say Hamilton.
14. Who will crash out of the most races?
Maldonado just seems to obvious again.... I'm going to say one of the Toro Rosso drivers, most likely Verstappen.
15. Who will finish last in the constructors’ championship?
Think this is decided as much as the winner is. Manor.
16. At which race will the drivers’ championship be decided?
Mexican Grand Prix.
17. What will be the biggest political story of the year?
If Mclaren suddenly becomes a monster of a car then it wouldn't surprise me if one of the other manufacturers complain about Honda being allowed to develop their engine when they originally weren't allowed to.
18. What will be the most entertaining race of the year?
Spa is the safest bet.
19. Who will win the constructors' championship?
Hard not to say Mercedes.
20. Who will win the drivers' championship?
Could go either way again. I think Hamilton might edge it again but I really wouldn't be surprised if Rosberg won this year. He's got the experience of a championship battle now so he'll only be stronger this year.
I'm announcing my retirement from championship predictions.

Well then. Thought Verstappen's aggressive rookie ways would get the best of him more times than it did. Also, way too positive on McLaren's chances, let alone Renault's chances. Or Williams' chances. Or Rosberg's chances. I didn't had 17 right, but Rosberg did threw his hat at Lewis, so there definitely was some beef tbh.

So in generally everyone over estimated Renault and under estimated Vettel; was hoping for much more drama between Lewis and Nico (on and off the track); many were close with title decider in Mexico (one round off); everything Manor losing was correct; and no one wanted to admit that McLaren would be rubbish all year.

Good year.

Power Unit:
The token system has been opened up a little.
2016: 32 (Up from 25)
2017: 25 (Up from 25)
2018: 20 (Up from 15)
2019: 15 (Up from 3)

The sections previously closed off for 2016 have been reopened. Essentially the token system has been pushed back a year. Any new manufacturer gets 15 development tokens in their first year and 32 in their second.

Also, manufacturers are allowed to sell year old spec power units and the FIA has confirmed that Ferrari will supply a team with a 2015 spec engine (hello Toro Rosso).

Virtual Safety Car:
DRS will be enabled as soon as the VSC period has ended. The VSC can now also be used in practice sessions.

Tyres:

  • Three tyre compounds will be chosen by Pirelli for every race
  • Thirteen sets of dry weather tyres will be provided to each driver, the same as in previous seasons.
  • Three of those sets will be chosen by Pirelli. Two will be chosen for the race, whilst the third will be the softest compound and will be used in Q3.
  • The driver may choose the remaining ten sets from the three compounds available.
  • In a dry race, each driver must use at least two compounds.
  • In a dry race, each driver must use at least one of the tyre sets chosen by Pirelli.
Bernie Ecclestone and Jean Todt
Bernie and Jean have been given the power to make suggestions regarding F1's governance, engine regulations and cost reduction and should have a conclusion by the end of January.

"Just like the webpages you view, the adverts on the car are chosen specifically for you - meaning that the car will look different to everyone"

If it ever comes to fruition I can't wait to see this thing get commentated over. It's going to f*ck with people's minds.

McLaren's Ron Dennis admits he fell out with TAG Heuer chief

Ron Dennis has conceded to a falling out with TAG Heuer CEO Jean-Claude Biver that resulted in the company jumping ship from McLaren to Red Bull.

A 30-year partnership between McLaren and the luxury watchmaker recently came to an end, adding to the losses of title sponsor Vodafone at the end of 2013, and Hugo Boss.

TAG Heuer has now teamed up with Red Bull, not only as a sponsor, but also in lending its name as an engine badge in 2016, with Biver describing the team as "young, dynamic and driven".

Speaking before the Red Bull engine deal was announced Dennis said: "With regard to TAG Heuer, it was a brand we were associated with for a very long time, and we had equity involvement.

"I controlled the sales and marketing of that company in the early periods, I was a shareholder, it went through a variety of iterations, changes of ownership.

"Let's say the thread of history got pulled tighter and tighter, and the current chief executive and I fundamentally disagreed about some things.

"I didn't share his view on a radical approach to sponsorship that I felt was inappropriate for our brand.

"There was a particular moment in Monte Carlo I didn't feel was positive, so that thread was caught."

McLaren has since acquired another brand of the prestigious LVMH group in Chandon, with Dennis claiming the association to be "multiples more valuable than TAG Heuer".

Despite the loss of so many key names, though, in recent times, Dennis is adamant the McLaren Technology Group is in rude health when it comes to its sponsorship and financial position.

"As chief executive I have the overview as to where the revenue streams are, and I have to predict where we are going to go," he added.

"You don't have to be Einstein to know the environment for Formula 1, and sports sponsorship overall, is challenging.

"The worst thing you can do is get into a situation where you drop your A-card and then things spiral out of control.

"I'm quite optimistic about the discussions we're having, but better to wait and see how we start next season.

"Do I lose sleep over it though? No I don't. We're very strong financially.

"The equity value of our organisation is now well over £1billion.

"All of our businesses are profitable, and we will be profitable.

"We're a strong organisation, and you use that strength to make sure you take good decisions overall."

Big fan of Ron Dennis. Absolute unprecedented fracas.
