PJTierney 4,956 Posted September 5, 2019 https://www.fiaworldrallycross.com/article/10462/nurturing-the-next-generation-at Quote Joona Pankkonen, 2018 Codemasters DiRT World Champion: “I went into the Supercar Lites test day with absolutely zero experience of driving a racing car, and I had a blast! It was even more fun than I had expected it to be, and the car is just spectacular. As a discipline, rallycross really excites and inspires me, and when I got behind the wheel for the first time, I just wanted to put my foot to the floor so I had to rein that in a little! I had an excellent teacher in Oliver [Eriksson], and with every lap I learned more and more and got quicker and quicker. Driving the car itself is not the difficult part; it’s driving it fast and finding the extra lap time that’s the challenge, but the gaming definitely helped me to prepare for this opportunity – there are actually a lot of similarities between DiRT and the real thing.”

ianism 1,316 Posted September 6, 2019 https://www.fiaworldrallycross.com/article/10464/scheider-hits-out-at-baciuska I had been wondering how Scheider got passed by Hansen through the joker in such a short period of time in Semi Final 2. There's no video of him losing all that ground. Seems like he thinks it was Baciuska's fault. also the start list is up for Latvia. Nitiss is back!

richie 522 Posted September 6, 2019 (edited) Pretty sure, if engineers manage to achieve a good balance in weight distribution, the e-RX cars would smash them. It's clear that there shouldn't be any turbo lag in RX Supercars, but still they first need to build that power up, whereas the torque in e-RX is instantly there, you press the 'gas pedal' and you get instant 100% of power. Weight will be a challenge though, but if you’re only planning to have batteries run for 5-10 minutes maybe you won’t need many.
ianism 1,316 Posted September 6, 2019 as the tech improves and more companies invest money in it, the e cars will only get better. (I hope lol)
Janneman60 157 Posted September 6, 2019 With the e-cars rallycross is over. E-cars have no soul, the tracks will be moved inside city's and those tracks will be boring as Dubai. It will get a public, they can call it wrx but it won't be rallycross.

Sure, but if they're going to race against RX Supercars they'll have to have similar weight, so they'd need some ballast, and under the same regulations I think e-RX would be faster. Electric racing attracts a lot of different people and sponsors. Same with Formula E. Maybe first year together with WRX, but I think after they should take a separate route. richie 522 Posted September 7, 2019 (edited) Absolutely, the racing is really good and much more fun to watch than most F1 races imo. There are some prominent names from the motorsport universe (F1, DTM, WEC etc). in the series. The Gen2 cars look so much better than the previous gen. Janneman60 157 Posted September 7, 2019 I grew up with rallycross being about beetles with a turbo engine, escorts some also with turbo. Those days the drivers were guys who build their cars themselves. Then the glorious grp.B cars. Try them in the game to get the tastsof hard to handle cars. Then slowly it went to what it is now. Guys who can drive as long as they have money, they can't maintain the csr themselves, they are payed drivers. For me most of them act like spoiled kids, no time for the cars, all the time for youtube video's about there live, workout training, as if they have nothing else to do, especially no work to do. Next thing is that the cars, coming from hard to drive to nowadays toys, going to loose what makes them rallycross cars, the technique and the engine sound. I can inagine that for a much younger generation, which grew up with all electric things surrounding (phones, wifi, unlimited internet, electric road cars) EWRX is attractive. I also hope the same young generation can understand that for an older generation this means the end and we are moaning about that a lot. All that said I must admit I love my electric bike ☺
richie 522 Posted September 7, 2019 (edited) No doubt, technology has made huge leaps the last decades which changed the sport, but it isn't necessarily a bad thing. Let's not forget, people raced whatever was available at their respective time. It wasn't their choice to drive those RX with primitive diffs, they didn't choose to drive a car down the Mulsanne straight with the fuel tank everywhere around them, yet we praise them as heroes. Sure, they had to be brave but if they had the choice they'd have preferred better tech. I highly doubt today's cars are toys and easy to handle. I've never driven a RX Supercar, but having 600HP and being that light these cars are rockets, and they still sound awesome, don't they? I think there's a misunderstanding with currently more and more emerging tech. The future isn't all electric, that's what many people in the automotive industry say. I'm convinced the combustion engine is not going to disappear, there will be a 'coexistence' with electric, hybrid and also hydrogen will be huge in the future. In the good old days there was no sequesential transmission, if you did it wrong something broke. The suspension is what you made of it, no computer could help you or the one who build your shockabsorbers. And the tires weren't that good either. The tracks had real bumpy gravel, not concrete with a little dust on it. So those cars on those tracks were all over the place while driving, very hard to handle. No need of jokerlaps back then, no one could drive 4 laps without little mistakes which made it possible to overtake. So modern cars are easier to drive. Nevertheless you still need skills and talent to do it better than others. But it is much closer to circuitracing now.
