Darkness and rain all the time

Recommended Posts

New to the Dirt Series...

There is a wonderful game hidden inside... Driving feels good to me. FFB is a bit weak but that's not a big problem for me. Also the sound getting lost is something i don't worry too much about... Ok: playing in cockpit view and suddenly everything is too dark to race on -> switching to bumper view... which is sadly too low over ground... will get fixed at some point... i'll survive...

BUT: It riddles me how a developer of a rally game comes to the conclusion that the probability of darkness during racing should be somewhat 40%? And chance of rain is 50%?

I finished my 3rd career cup now... Last time: Australia... Raining... after that it is dark and dry... Lets go on to Spain now... raining... sure... Argentina... wet too... and: dark again...

Is it too much to ask to be able to enjoy the beautiful courses AT DAY TIME WITHOUT RAIN? I'm no expert but i'd say 20% chance of rain and every fourth race at darkness/near darkness should be enough. For the moment i can't enjoy my career mode which i'd prefer because i won't tolerate these conditions in 7 of 8 races... In the approx 8 hours i played so far: (guessed) 4 runs with clear sky and at daytime... I'm also driving much better because I SEE THINGS.

Seems the FX guys were so in love with their work and the scenery guys just shrugged....

I totally trust that everything i mentioned will be fixed quite soon but i'm not sure if Codemasters acknowledge the night/rain scenario as a real problem?

Agreed! It's taking away from my enjoyment: too much dark and rain.

Also, the headlights, spots and fogs don't throw nearly enough light forward.

When I rallied in real life I could burn holes in the horizon with the amount of light coming off the front of my Escort.

All I want is for them to try and simulate a normal rally weekend. Let me start at dawn for SS1, let the weather from SS1 influence the weather for that "day's" events, and don't bring out a Night stage until around SS4/5. Then do a "Day 2" grouping of stages the same way. As it is now it makes no sense to run SS1 as a Night/Rain only to have SS2 be a Day/Dry

AMEN.

wow.

I was going to post the same thing. Everything is always so dark...even with my HDR slider set to max I can’t see jack **** in the daytime when it’s overcast. Lights on the cars you say? What lights...there are lights?! Oh...you mean the tiny flashlights taped to the front bumper with 5 nits of brightness. Pure jokes is this game to me so far.

I started playing DR1 again, at least there I can see properly during the day, at night, can feel FFB effects, and the sense of speed is accurate etc.

Sorry for being so cynical - but Codies botched on this release.

I Hope a patch rolls out and real soon no less.

I ended up turning the brightness up on my tv as couldn't see daytime in heavy shadows. 😁

Dirt 4 (in free play mode) had every stage available in whatever condition you wanted, morning, noon, afternoon, rain, cloudy, dark. Seems like now stages are more locked to time/condition?

Definitely agree that the bulk of stages should be daytime and dry. I really don't enjoy night stages much at all, except for an occasional challenge.

In Free Mode you can select weather conditions and daytime at least in custom tournaments. But that doesn‘t help me progress in my career, earning credits, unlocking upgrades, etc...

i really love the game but that is breaking it for me. After initial enthusiasm my playing came to a halt now because i don‘t want to race blindly anymore. Glad i didn‘t buy dlc/deluxe... but will immediately when this is fixed.

By fixed i don’t mean better lighting but especially less darkness courses and much(!!!) less rain!

rain in spain, argentina, australia... c’mon! please check weather statistics for these countries...

I’m really hoping this gets patched, would be a “quick win” for codies as this issue has been a pain for a lot of users.

edit: just started a career rally in Spain, the forecast is rain for every event apart from one, which is at night...this spain... not Wales lmao

Most of us will be done with career, by the time this gets patched.

They probably used all conditions as equal for their random event tool that creates the events in career.
But night or rain or night/rain should be the exception, not the norm.

^this 😄

when i think about how much fun and pure joy i had with the few races i had during good weather i‘m still baffled how easily you can suck the fun out of a brilliant game... i really do wonder who makes these kind of wonky decisions?

each new stage i was hoping for good weather and time just to be dissappointed again. At some point i had to stop before disappointment turns into anger.

I could be angry because i sunk 50 bucks into the game but it‘s more like: „the game is great. But why oh why?!“

Hole career mode are destroyed becaused of this raining and dark stages that send me in the ditch. And I m so mad. So stupid to have a champion game to force you go blind.

Whilst I’m not raging against it, I do hope something is done about this in future. 75% of stages are taking place in evening or nighttime and well over half seem to be run in the rain. The way the surface swings from wet to dry to wet to dry every stage feels really ‘gamey’ too.

As @CatBadders mentioned above, it would be great if each ‘day’ could follow some sort of weather template, with much less changing and more stages run during the day (which is when the game looks best anyway IMO).

Also, several locations when raining don’t have overcast or cloudy skies, it’s still plenty of sunshine and feels like it’s there to show off the evening lighting rather than to provide a realistic interpretation of a rally event.

D4 did this part better IIRC, probably just because it had morning, noon and afternoon versions. You’ve made some gorgeous weather effects for the game, but please let their occurrence be the exception rather than the norm.

Let me just say this: If Codies sees fit to change the occurrence of night + rain, at least make it an option. I like the variety it adds rather than just running dry day stage after dry day stage (if there was some more subtle variation to the dry stages, like wind, variable cloudiness, and temperature to contend with, it'd be different - but since we just have the ~3 basic variations, it'd get old fast IMHO)

Heavy rain in Australia looks like foot long icicles with jagged edges coming down only in a 10 meter radius around the car.  Sunny with bright reflections on the puddles.  No difference between wipers on or off.  It almost gave me a seizure.

Rain and night stages appear so often that they are starting to become a chore rather than the challenge they would be if they appeared less frequently.

I guess Codemasters being a UK developer they think it rains as much around the world as it does over there? Every rally in this game feels a bit like Wales Rally GB. I agree with Bluebluesky  that they should check weather statistics for each location.

To be honest, Whilst I'll admit there appears to be a lot of rain and night stages, I rather enjoy it instead of 80% boring day-dry stages. Think a lot of people should harden up! Reality is you aren't always going to get ideal conditions in a rally.

I will however, agree they need to fix the lighting issues, such as instances where suddenly things appear to be almost pitch-black just because of a bit of tree coverage in certain conditions.

Solution: Slider for percentage rain and percentage night stages (with some random variability on top).

But they should definitely be reduced from the current percentage, no matter what. Sorry, 50% rain and dark is just ridiculous.

And I agree that for a serious rally game, stages beginning in the morning and proceeding through the hours of the day should be the default approach.

I'd say it's more that 50% at the moment. Feels like your lucky to get more than 1 or 2 clear races per event at the minute. I'd kind of got used to the crappy FFB but this has stopped me playing the game all together at this point.

I think there are four time periods, day, sunset, dusk and night and it cycles through those.

For each, there’s only 1, 2 or 3 weather conditions and I think it chooses one at random.

We aren't complaining about the night/rain itself (although these weak ass lights are a different problem), we are just getting annoying by the randomness of the weather. If it's morning/raining for SS1 why is it a night/dry for SS2 and a afternoon/wet for SS3? Give us consistency. Make it feel like a real race weekend, progress through the day and make the weather match.

Not just the randomness of it.

(but you‘re right: make it more realistic in that aspect))

chance of rain/wet roads atm: 1/2 to 2/3rd.

chance of daylight atm: 1/2 to 1/3rd.

that accumulates to:

1/4th chance for daytime/dry at the very best.

1/9th at worst. Somewhere between... (my guess: 1/6th atm)

i think no one will get bored soon if for example: every 3rd stage would be dry/day and the rest 2/3rd is mixed (dark/wet/rain). That‘s still a lot of rain and darkness but BY FAR better than the situation as it is now.

@CatBadders

Just for the record, I’m pretty sure the time of day does progress properly, so it doesn’t go from day to night without the sunset stages.

I like that that they have the cycle through the times in the correct order and I like that each event starts at a random point in that cycle (I think) so the events are varied. But it really needs more daytime lighting options, so sunrise, morning, noon, afternoon, sunset, dusk, night.

Just, as you say, the randomness of weather needs addressing IMO and there need to be some set patterns, with the possibility of all dry events. And the possibility of all wet events. And the possibility of mostly dry, with a heavy shower that means the next couple of stages are wet before it dries up events. And a few other patterns. But not completely random on a stage by stage basis.

Project Cars 1 and 2 messing this up was the reason I never enjoyed the career mode of that game, hopefully Codemasters can rustle up a solution to it. That said, some of the hyperbole in this thread is ridiculous.
