Dirt Rally 2 Uncontrollable GroupB 4WD

Recommended Posts

I'm finding the Group B 4WD class uncontrollable.

Specifically from 3rd person camera and xbox controller, but this seems more care specific.

Here's how to reproduce:

Freeplay -> Custom -> Create Championship -> Add Event

Spain -> Group B 4WD

Stage conditions -> Daytime / Clear / Dry Surface

Now Start Championship and select MG Metro 6R4

Accelerate too 100kph or so to get into 2nd or 3rd gear.

Release throttle and let speed drop to ~60kph.

Gently steer left or right.

Observe car spin out 180deg!

This is insane! You can reproduce this as low as 30kph with no braking or acceleration or hard steering on dry bitumen. Mostly 2nd or 3rd gear, 1st gear is more stable for some reason. Soft tires don't help. Enabling stability assists also don't help.

I tried the same test above with different cars from different groups. Here are the results:

Group H1 - Mini - Great
Group H2 RWD - Alpine - Challenging
Group H3 - Ford Cosworth - Challenging
Group B 4WD - MG Metro, Ford FS200 - Uncontrollable.
Group A - Subaru 1995 - Great
Group R2 - Ford Fiesta R2 - Great
Group R5 - VW Golf - Great
2000 - Citroen C4 - Great
Rally GT - Porsche 911 - Challenging

So most cars are fine, a few difficult but the GroupB 4WD take the cake for instability.

Driving from cockpit is slightly better as you can tell the car is losing grip and correct more quickly.  From 3rd person view it is not possible to tell the car has started to slip.

Anyway this lack of grip under very modest conditions is making the game unenjoyable for me.  I previously enjoyed both Dirt Rally and Dirt 4.

I tried this for shits'n'giggles on PC with a Dualshock 4 and couldn't reproduce anything like the instability you are desribing.

I did Spain, same conditions, MG Metro. It is twitchy, but not like you're describing.

Not sure what the problem could be, maybe put all advanced input settings back to default and see what happens?

Yeah this is realistic, what he is doing is go to 100 kph and coast, if you turn then without giving slight throttle or brake, all the diffs are open and the car will rotate in itself since the wheels can spin freely and nothing is stopping the car from rotating. Physics people.

The problem with the MG Metro is that rear anti-roll bar is set to around 50% default, front ARB is very soft. This must result in heavy oversteer. Torque bias at around 30% is no help either 😂 I'd try moving torque bias more towards 40-45% and see how it goes. If it still oversteers you can play with ARBs a bit, soften the rear and stiffen the front.

Thanks for all the replies.

I will try some car configuration and different Group B vehicles.

Just tried the MG Metro in Dirt Rally and Dirt 4 for comparison. Dirt 4 was a quite controllable, Dirt Rally was difficult, but not the level of near random instability I see in Dirt Rally 2.

I'd love to hear confirmation that my experience is intentional, simulating something real.  In which case these cars are either death traps or real rally drivers should avoid steering with a xbox controller while viewing drone footage!

I'm new to this edition of the game, so it's not yet clear if I must win races in Group B to progress the historic championship or just attempt them.

That was a good call! Just tried this Group B car and after a test lap was not only not spinning out but starting to see some green sections. I'll have to try some of your other recommendations.  Pretty good fun and great engine sound.

I normally just stay clear of the RWD, which is why I had been sticking with the 4WDs for Group B.

No luck with tuning so far. I tried Brake Bias under Brakes, all the LSD settings related to oversteer under differential, and front and back anti roll under Springs. Perhaps some tiny improvements, but still spinning out too easily at low speed with this car.  Can't say I actually understand these settings beyond the help blurb and very basic physics.

just started driving the 131 in the monthly, man that thing drives so nice, really controllable sliding, super agile and not too nervous.

From most drive-able to least drive-able (in my opinion):

  1. Peugeot 205 Turbo 16
  2. Ford RS200
  3. MG Metro 6R4
  4. Lancia Delta S4
  5. Audi Sport quattro S1

imho,  if you truly want to enjoy this game and play it a lot i suggest you to buy a wheel, even a second hand if you are on budget. (amazon marketplace)  it's another world

Sometimes if you change too many things in the setup you can mess up the car's handling and you lose track of what did what, so it's better to reset to default and start from scratch again. Change only one thing at a time and see what happens.

Try inverting anti-roll bars settings by moving the front ARB slider to the middle and the rear to the minimum. It should give you more stability,

i did the whole Group B historic championship with the RS200, completely stock/default setup, on a PS4 controller. didn't really have too many problems and i'm far from amazing at this game.

i've never really like the MG Metro, in any game it's been in.

you mention you had the spinning problems in Spain, but the physics on tarmac are really janky in this game.

and yeah the Group B cars are death traps, that's why they were banned.

you can't just smash the right trigger on the controller and expect to be in control (for lack of a better term, ha) of the group b cars, even with tuning applied and traction control on full. they are extremely light and extremely powerful. you need a lot of finesse. use really light throttle input unless you're in a straight, only apply full throttle then. slower is often faster with group b.

the Audi has a long wheelbase and the default tuning makes it understeer a lot so sounds like it might be better fit for you than the MG Metro. personally i like the RS200 best.

EDIT: just did some testing with this car on PS4, i can see the problem the OP is talking about. but you just need to be gentle with the throttle and input. turning stability control on to 2 and traction control on to 3 makes it a lot more driveable.

Audi's wheelbase is actually as short as the Metro's. It's just that the body is quite long that makes it look like it has a longer wheelbase.

The Audi's wheelbase is actually 19cm shorter than the Metro's (2,224mm vs 2,412mm)

edit: just checked, there are only three rally cars in the game with a shorter wheelbase than the Quattro: Mini, Alpine, Stratos.
