DiRT Rally 2.0 is fine!

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

i don´t usually post in forums anymore , since i had my personal flame-wars set sometime about the late 90ties. But since i read a lot of comments, posts and articles about how much broken DiRT 2.0 i got the urge to tell you and especially the codemasters team what a great piece of game this is So, i play rally games since Colin McRea and V-Rally for the PlayStation 1, like this is a good 20 years of rally gaming right now. So i get myself some credit for knowing what i´am talking about.

DiRT Rally 2.0 is one of the most awesome gaming experiences i ever had. But there are some things that need to be talked about. First of: I play with the Logitec G29 Racing wheel with the shifter attached, manual shiftig on, only "help" is ABS at 2, everything other is turned of. I drive in first person view, like not the cockpit view, not the hood view, like "street view". Of course i picked the most realistic setting available to start my rally journey. First Test-drive...BOOM goes the dynamite, no problem i guess. But wait, damage done in the test drive section has to be repaired for the race? With money that i don´t have yet? O.k. - i´ll try. I´ll wrecked the car at the third turn. No problemo, this is an other kind of game; i´ll have to drive careful and don´t mess up my car. In the next races i really felt that my car was a valuable thing which i will take care of with caution. Getting a little of the groove till the first night track. As i mentioned earlier, i drive on "stree-view" - so i cannot see most of the curves; feels like it´s kind of unfair, since everybody driving in "full behind the car drone view" can see like 30% of the whole track anytime. But, this is no difference to the other dirt games and its a homemade problem, i don´t have to drive in this view, i just enjoy it the most. Why do i mention this then? Since lights seem the most important part of the car. Seriously now, i cannot image that any developer of this game had tried driving a night track, in FP view with damaged lights. I can´t see ****! This is not drivable, this is not playable, this is not enjoyable at all, still i tell you: DiRT 2.0 is fine! The graphics, the feeling, the weather, the cars, the sound, the tracks, awesome! Just awesome! [Don´t got the FFB issue, so i don´t speak for these guys obviously]

For the most part rally games are a personal challenge, or at least what i´am seeing in them. There are about your ability to concentrate, to react, to focus; deal with anger, disappointment and challenge yourself to do better, because u know you can. With all these bits i mentioned before and a lot more that makes me bite into my streering wheel, this is the rally game i ever wanted. This is the dark souls of rally, with all the hard edges and added possible personal fails u will run into - after over 300 hours of DiRT franchise i congratulate codemasters for the masterpiece of rally game.

Still: I play with a friend one day of the week, every time we have to set up a whole tournament if we wan´t to drive, - and we can´t even pick up old ones we did not finish. But this is a first world problem really. So thank you guys for making this game. And to the rest: I know, there are some things you might find broken or worse, - but as we say in germany: "Don´t look a gift horse in the mouth." The majority of things to do right in a rally game, you find in DiRT 2.0 made to near perfection, so calm yourselfs and enjoy.

Thanks for your time.

I think it will be the dark souls of rally when they improve hardcore damage system and implement it in My Team, along with more events for a championship and longer breaks between service stops. I hope they will eventually.

Interesting, we've got the same saying in Polish. 🙂

Indeed we do. Only problem is that this saying does not apply here. It wasn't a gift, it was an exchange. We exchanged money, which was not defective, for this game and therefore we have a right to expect, and demand, that the product we exchanged it for to be not defective also. Obviously, certain design choices cannot be considered as defects, as they very often and unfairly are, but things like career progress being reset, because of a badly designed system, is a clear defect to me and I will continue with demanding for it to be fixed. And I also think that DR2 is "fine", it doesn't mean however that there is no room for improvement and that we shouldn't talk about it's flaws which, in certain cases, prevent us from having the aforementioned "fun", to put it mildly.

Hardcore does work. I've had broken steering many times where one front wheel won't turn. And engine problems resulting in a very slow car (not the grip bug either)

Why would you look in a horses mouth anyway. N if you did why would that be bad?

Ps you can take a horse to water but you can't make it drink!

The saying is here in the US as well. Traditionally, when buying a horse (or oxen, etc...) you look at the teeth as a way of telling its age and general health.  You are paying a lot of money for the beast and want to be sure of your investment.

To look at a gifted horse's mouth is considered as a slap in the face to the gifter.  In other words, be thankful for what you have been given.

Since we have all purchased this horse we certainly should have checked its teeth.  We just didn't get a good look until after money had changed hands... 😊

Yeah, it turned out to be a linguistic experiment. ;]

Some parts of it work, like it's quite easy to get a puncture or get terminal damage from a head-on crash. But you can still get away almost unscathed with a rolling accident like the one Neuville had recently..

Rolling accidents are a bit too unforgiving, specially on the bodywork damage.

It should also be easier to break the suspension when hitting something hard with the wheels.

"Never look a gift horse in the mouth - sell it in a bun with cheese and relish instead" ... As they would say at Burger King
