LAN connection via IP

Recommended Posts

Hi, im new to online gaming and hope someone can help. I have just bought F1 2019 on Steam, my friend also has this at his house on his computer. Can I set up an online game so me and him can race against each other at different addresses on different machines as ad hoc events rather than setting up a league? I saw connecting to a LAN game via IP but not sure how to do this, how to host, or then how he would join? I only want a race against him (possibly computer racers too). Is this something that can be done? If so, can someone help detail how?

Thanks in advance.

LAN Game means on the same local area network. I'm afraid t'interwebs ain't no LAN.

You could play against each other at the same house, connected to the same router.

Or you can set up an Unranked Multiplayer session and make it invite only and add AI. One of you is host and invites the other, this you can do and it is how Multiplayer is meant to work.

If you want to set it up to 'keep score' then you DO have to set up a League.

Thanks Stevie, sadly we live 200 miles apart so same house connection isn’t possible. Not sure how you do an Unranked multiplayer but will look into that. If I set up a league to keep score, it looked like you had to schedule the races in so these had to be played at certain times. We effectively want to just log in whenever we can and just have an hour or so, then leave until next time....can you do that in the league?! Thanks

Head into Unranked and Create Session, make it Invite Only. Haven't set up a league yet, as I belong to a racing league and will be doing what they recommend with Leagues or Unranked as they determine. There are certainly some advantages to the Leagues but most of the feedback I have seen is the limited to 20 places (reserves), set schedules (weekly) so I'm not sure it will be adopted without significant changes. AI racing in place of regulars is certainly not something we would allow under current rules, etc.
