ok wait, I'm thinking of getting this for PS4, but don't have the PS Plus membership because f that.

does that mean the My Team section is locked out? or just the community events? or just the stuff that's "actually" online?

You just need an online connection to access MyTeam I believe, you should only need Plus for Multiplayer.

cool, that's what I suspected but wanted to check. internet connection isn't a problem, 70$/year just to play online is. thanks!

first of all, you definitely want the update. there's a LOT of bug fixes and improvements in there. the game was pretty buggy and felt kind of unfinished when it was released, and there's still quite a bit to do in my opinion.

anyways. it depends what you mean by offline. you're downloading an update so it's probably fair to assume you have an internet connection. that'll give you access to everything except actual PvP online stuff, and maybe or maybe not the clubs. see below.

basically there are two "modes" of playing the game.

A) My Team. you have a team (like, engineers and stuff) and a garage. you start with two cars (Lancia Fulvia for rally events and an Opel Corsa S1600 for RX) which are free to repair. you do events to get cash and you spend the cash on cars, upgrades to cars (which unlock as you drive them more), and repairs (all the other cars you buy you have to pay to fix).

you need an internet connection to play in My Team, but if you're on console you do not need to have the online membership, apparently.

there are three types of events in My Team. note that the locations and stages for all of these are picked randomly.

  1. Career: there are separate careers for Rally & RX, but they're the same basically. you can pick any car you have in your garage. it's recommended to start with the Fulvia, but you can do whatever you want. the first time you do it, the AI is easier and each location has just 4 stages. there are 5 difficulty levels: Open, Clubman, Pro, Elite and Masters. you progress to the next difficulty by getting in the top 3 of the championship, which is 6 locations. when a championship is over (whether you get to the next level or not), the game will pick 6 new locations and their stages for the next one. you get money based on how well you do against the AI as well as how long the events are (how many km it is) - a location with longer stages will give more cash.
  2. Community Events: these events aren't against the AI, they're against other players and everyone has to use the same class of cars to make it even. there are a few types of events. Bonus ones contain DLC content, so you need to have paid for that if you want to play them. D+ ones are for people who have the Deluxe Edition. the rest anyone can do. Daily Events are just one stage and change every 24h. Weekly Events are 6-10 stages in one location and rotate every 7 days. Monthly Events are 3-4 locations of 6-10 stages each and switch every 28 days. you get a little bit of money right when you finish the event (depending how long it is) then when the time for the event is up, you get a bonus depending on how fast you are compared to everyone else who completes the Event (and of course how many km the event is). the fastest 10% of players are in Tier 1, and get the most money, the next 25% are Tier 2 and get a bit less. the next 40% are Tier 3 and the slowest 25% are Tier 4 and get the least. it's not really a huge difference between Tiers 1 and 4 though. (photo showing rewards below)
  3. AI Challenges: this is kind of like halfway between Community Events are Career. you're driving against AI times - about Pro level, so they're pretty good but no match for the better players - but the events rotate every day/week/month like the Community events. how you do against the AI determines how much cash you get, the same way as community events

B) Freeplay. no teams, no garage, no cash, no upgrades needed. you just pick the thing you want to do and car you want and go. oh also you can choose the difficulty level on a scale of 0-100. this is offline, except where noted.

  1. Custom Championship: you can do any location with any car (unless you don't have the DLC of course). the team and all the cars have 100% of the upgrades you have to pay for in My Team. you can make a championship the has both RX and Rally events it in (though you can't use rally cars on RX tracks and vice versa). this is offline by default, but if you have PS Plus you can do this online with other people. if you're playing online and the host chooses a DLC location or car class, you are allowed to use that stuff, which is pretty neat.
  2. Time Trial: pick a location, stage (wet or dry), and car and see how fast you can go against other people in the same car class and weather conditions. offline
  3. FIA World Rallycross Championship: take one of the RX Supercars and do a championship over every RX track in the game (soon to be 10, or just 8 if you don't have the DLC).
  4. Historic Championship: there are 12 championships here divided into eras. coming in the top 3 in a championship will "Complete" it and unlock the next era. that's pretty much it. all the locations and stages are pre-set. there's no DLC here at all.
  5. Racenet Clubs: you definitely need an internet connection for this, but you don't need PS Plus. you've got to join a club beforehand online, and you're competing against other people in the club. the locations and stages and stuff are set by whoever runs the club, usually another player like us. you get points depending on how well you do, but that's about all I know. this is the only mode I haven't done much of, so I can't say too much more because I just dont know.
