Possibility of Purchasable Skins?

I have just bought DR2 and was hoping that legendary liveries were included in the game. I did some research and it seems that codemasters say they are not included due to costs, yet other companies state they are not expensive for some reason? As a high earner I love the current DLC roadmap as it allows me to fund the game and future development via this content delivery method. I’ve bought the game and all DLC on 3 platforms and will buy all future DLC. I am also a firm believer that the DLC is too cheap and I would like to see the price increased even doubled.

    Regarding skins. I personally I have enough disposable income to happily pay $25 for a single skin and I think this model would be a huge benefit for the DR franchise. I understand that not everyone can afford to buy skins, however that doesn’t mean high earners like me should be excluded or discriminated against if we can supply money to the devs to help fund future DLC for the game then we should be allowed to do so. I would personally prefer to donate or pay up to $100+ for a skin depending on its rarity which will help fund the future of the game.

     Please keep supporting the game, consider increasing the price of the DLC and also look at creating exclusive skins for a VIP pass that high earners like myself can purchase that will help support and fund the game and provides no benefit other than cosmetic but demonstrates visually that I donated $100 to the team and received an exclusive skin on my car that not everyone else has.

The thing is, a skin would never be $25 while the car itself is $3. Know what i mean?

Even if a martini skin for the focus mk1 would be 2 dollars, im sure a lot of folks would purchase it. Not sure if it'd cover the licensing costs anyway. 100 purchases would be 200 dollars and Im sure the martini license costs more than that. However, there's 4 different martini color schemes for the Focus: 1999,2000,2001,2002. So if each were 2 dollars, maybe they could make more money.

Anyway, that martini scheme isn't alone, there's also the Telefonica/Movistar to pair with Martini, so they'd have to get that too. It's more complex than it seems, sadly. It should just be a painting...but brands prefer not to treat it like that.

I think you misunderstood. I mean like Apex Legends skins etc. I bought the heirloom skins which cost me around $200 but I did it to fund and support the development of the game.

I would buy a limited edition skin for $100 as it would give me exclusivity and show I supported the game with a large donation. It doesn’t need to cost them $100, they just need to make exclusive skins that are expensive so high earners like me can support future development. By increasing DLC costs and skins cost they can get extra money from those willing to pay and it doesn’t negatively affect low earners etc. It just gives me a nicer rarer livery for $200 for example.

Hmm yeah, to be honest I could see the skin market work. I mean some would rant, but that's normal around here. On the other hand, some would purchase and get an unique look.

It'd be a nice way to get the Martinis and others.

@PJTierney is there any way this could be suggested in the studio and who knows, a test be made to see if people adhere? Purchaseable Martini liveries would be dope. Let's see what they think.

I could see this work in the near future, as people will want to show off with the official liveries like Ford Martini ones, Mitsubishi Marlboro, Peugeot Total, etc.

These liveries should stay strictly historic though. So for example, you'd only have Martini liveries available to purchase on the cars that used it in real life, like the Ford Focus Mk1, Lancias, etc. Same for Marlboro, only available in the Lancer Evo VI, Peugeot 206 (not sure if any other used it). Otherwise, it'll get silly.

i don't think we are ever going to see the Martini liveries due to alcohol licensing restrictions in certain countries. even in F1 2018, which of course had all the official skins since it's an officially licensed game, the full Martini livery was missing from the Williams. they used the plain blue and white one.

Increasing the price of DLC would mean leaving out a lot of us who can't afford it but additional income for Codies is not a bad idea.

Now besides special "expensive" content like liveries they could also sell spots in the game to the highest bid so your name can be in a stage or in a car or in a plate somewhere in Codemasters' offices.

It's not a bad idea to have special supporters.

the same thing should apply for the F1 game though. why not use the full Martini livery in the US, for example, and just use the alternate one on the game versions from the PSN/Xbox/Steam stores for the regions where alcohol licensing is restricted? 

i'm sure there's some licensing issue that prevents them from doing what you said.

Because I think that livery comes in the base game, which is distributed everywhere, whereas the DLC livery is purchaseable separately so I think they can restrict the countries the DLC can be sold at.

They lose less money than if they restricted the whole game getting sold.

Hey guys, gonna give a little bump in this, as it might get a hot subject in the coming days.

 

This subject came back up after discussing the Peugeot 206 liveries. The silver/red 2001/2002 livery is a very desirable one, among a few others for some other cars. So this thread can actually be relevant for a market test and maybe, who knows, they decide to test its viability with one of the skins in the store. This also makes it possible for consoles to have real skins instead of PC exclusive mods.

 

We're talking about real liveries here, licensed and therefore paid. Not the bonus fantasy that come in the Seasons. So please, if anyone is actually interested in this possibility, feel free to discuss and show your interest. 🙂

I can't speak for everyone on this, I'm sure some people would struggle to justify $0.99 for a livery and that is just fine if they don't desire it. But some of us do, and we are willing to throw $5-$10 at a single epic paint job for a car we are about to drive 100+ hours in.

Specially the most iconic ones, such as: Peugeot Total 2001-2002, Tommi Makinen Evo VI 2001 (not the Marlboro one), etc. I think there would be an acceptable demand to see these liveries in the game. There's been a lot of conversation around the Focus Mk2 liveries. A BP and Castrol ones would be good, but this also needs to be profitable.

I think that even with this business model, and even being optional DLC, the Martini and Marlboro ones are out of the question, sadly.

But for all we know, the silver Clarion livery may have been coming anyway and now because of your comment to PJ we may get charged extra for it, in addition to the car 🙈

It would be better if a good livery came with the car, and then maybe another good one (like the 2002 red one) were purchasable separately. 

Wouldn’t surprise me if Codies see your comment/this thread as a green light to dish out more dlc cars with plain liveries, which is precisely what the community has been complaining about. Even though this thread still only has a few members asking for it. 

when paying for the dlc car (or base game cars in future games), they still need to try and get one half decent livery, and then other ones can be purchasable, if that’s the route they want to go down.

and liveries that were in previous base games (e.g dr1) should not be purchasable lol 

 

maybe an official poll thread from pj could work, i am for purchasable skins but it needs to be handled quite delicately imho

The thing is, the hinted livery to come with the 206 is not the silver/red total. And as all of this requires licensing, it might just not come because of costs.

This whole livery idea isn't just tied to the 206. It also opens the possibility to have more real liveries on other cars, specially because the DLC cars are locked and will likely stay locked. We all know real liveries won't come in the Seasons, it's gonna be like it has been.

It's a way of us getting the real thing and at the same time support the game further.

Hm...I play in cockpit view only, so I don't see the car from the outside very often.

I would pay up to 5€ for a livery PACK with at least 3-5 liveries for different cars. Real liveries or really good fake ones.

 

I'll be honest, I was a little disappointed, that the new Stratos-livery don't have the checkered flag on the front hood. Looks slightly empty this way.

It’s not? I must have got it all wrong then, but didn’t he say we’ll probably get a Burns livery for the 206 and it’s not the red/white car. What else livery did Burns race on the 206?

Well this is just my interpretation, so it can be wrong obviously. Remember when the 206 wall mount photo got posted in here? It had the 2003 red marlboro/total livery. Burns did run in it as well, before retiring due to health problems. However, I'd assume Burns was most known in the 206 during 2002.

Indeed, it's better than having the empty marlboro white squares since they cant be put.

Is DR2 able to properly show a silver colour on livery at all?

Searching for a single one I viewed a few videos. And I found no single silver livery element. I guess it's because of fixed Fresnel's parameters for liveries (but might be wrong) . But what I found otherwise are images confirming that liveries use old-style shaders which combine specular light and cube-map, which are setup separately. This leads to situation where those two don't match each other. For example I can see pretty blurred light reflection (like on matte material) and sharp environment reflection (proper for glossy material) at the same time. No need to argue why it's unrealistic, right?
Watching more liveries I'm almost sure gfx engine is not capable to blur env-reflection simulating different reflective properties (and to match specular light).
I cannot believe such simplified approach is still a thing in 2019 game. TBH I though CM has reached for PBR for this title.
