Hope you like it B)

... quite a bad rip from Dirt 3. Sorry, but you even managed to screw up the alignment of the resize. The 200% upscale mixed with the re-exporting in DDS form results in a blurred and smudgy texture.

Not to mention that the white level of Dirt 3 texture (which is nearly 100% white) can't be used in Dirt Rally. In DR we need a much compressed dynamic range, with greysh whites, light blacks and desaturated colors so that the shaders, reflections and HDR looks OK in the game engine.

I finally made the part #2 of my tutorial on advanced skinning for DR. It's about accurate white/black/color brightness and saturation, a problem I've found in almost skins released so far by the community. This is a copy and paste:

If you ever opened one of the main external textures made by the devs you probably noticed how the colors are “off”: white is greysh, the black is just dark grey and the colors looks quite desaturated from their real life equivalent. No, there are no colorblind texture artists in Codemasters. The reason of this is the game engine. HDR, reflections, shaders and all the effects of the game graphic engine need a certain range of contrast and saturation to operate. Using a 255,255,255 white or a 100% saturated color, will result in a flat texture, out of contest from the other objects in the environment (and the HDR will literally make it glow).

I didn’t analyze every stock skin from Dirt Rally, but I found different white levels. I don’t know if this is balanced in the specular texture, but in my experience an 80% of brightness and saturation is good in most of the cases.

For example, in my Fiesta WRC template pictured above, white is RGB 202,202,202 (or 80% white), while black is 43,43,43 (~84% black). These are white and black levels you can find in most of the other stock texture, with slight variations (the Peugeot Sport livery is a bit yellowish).

For the sponsor layers on the other hand, I’ve found that lowering saturation AND brightness by 10-15% works in most of the case. To make even a better job, it’s important to selectively alter the whites and blacks of the layers using the Replace Color function (image > adjustment in Photoshop). And of course, this is what you need to do for the base colors of the livery.

So to summarize: never use full white, black or fully saturated colors. Check the stock skins for hints about a good color value.

Can someone do Carlos sainz s' 1993 Jolly Club Lancia?. Well and the 1992 martini livery would look great too. I know there's a martini livery on RD but the colours aren't very accurate.

PD:I think an option for the martini lancia to include  martini sportline logos or the normal martini ones would be awesome btw

@RyuPoi that Lancia is GORGEOUS. Thank you. Seriously.

I may or may not have a problem installing liveries.

I put them in the folders where they should go, I follow the exact steps and still, when I am in game the liveries simply aren't there. Anybody else have this problem, or even better: Anyone have a fix for this problem?

Uh, is the 037 done yet? If so, where can I download it?

@Corwynn if you've got the textures set to low, then that could be the problem. If not then I have no idea....

Unless you mean that you cannot find them on the livery select screen, in which case that's because they aren't there since there isn't yet a way to edit the select screen thumbnails. Just select the one the livery was supposed to overwrite and once you load the stage, it should be the new modded livery.

Looks great! i want it now!!! but i think it needs the pìrelli logo in the back and the martini lines closer to the headlights i think. And as i can see, the martini logos are kinda blue, they are black in real life. Anyways great work
Martini logos are now black, repositioned the Lancia logo on the bonnet to match real life, added Volta and Pirelli logos to the front and back grilles, and made the Martini stripes closer to the headlights like you said. Trying to match those stripes to the front was a pain but it looks a lot better now.
Looks very nice ! Will you share it ?

I have the textures set to Ultra, if you mean that. Everything is on the highest setting for me, except Advanced Blending. I did try the Ford RS200 and took the livery it was supposed to overwrite. I still had the same one as in the screen.

I started a skin for the Opel Manta, based in a real one from Rallye Sanremo 1983, Its Henri Toivonen's car (#7)
Progress has been great so far, but i'm struggling to find good photos, there are lots of brands logos i can't figure out

If anyone could help me finding these, i will gladly appreciate :)
And this is how things are going so far

I perfectly understand that you want to recreate the skin in the best way you can (and you seem to be doing a fine job so far), but frankly I don't see the point in recreating number plates and banners of a specific rally such Monte-Carlo, for example. To be honest, this is what I did in RBR most of the time, but after countless skins I really can't see an advantage, let's say, in having a perfectly accurate car livery with Monte-Carlo stickers on a gravel stage in Greece.

PS: You found the best spot ever in DR for a screenshot.

I share the same view, it's really pointless to do specific plates (wouldn't be if the game allowed different skins per rally BTW)
so i was already pretending to later on make a more "generic" version, but it's cool to have the "historic" version as well

Couldn't be better eh? it's just after the stage starts!

Sorry guys, I left for Anime Expo right after I teased you guys with those pictures. Still in Los Angeles, but I'll be home in the next few days which is when I'll release the skin.

I put up a post in the suggestion box about custom Driver/Codriver window Names (game name), and also mentioned that it would be great to have per-rally door numbers too, search for it and vote it up if you like it.

Anyhow not trying to change subject, just saying...

All 037 fans run to RD now, first Martini livery popped up over there 2 hours ago!
Dang, someone managed to release one before me. It's pretty good too, probably better than mine. Not sure if I should release mine now  :/

I'm not so sure about that. Your Martini stripes seem to be quite a bit smoother (less jaggy/stepped) and at least going by your screenshots compared to what I see with the other one in-game, you might have compensated for DiRT Rally's lighting a bit better. The whites looked a bit harsh/glaring in Wales when I took it for a sp... completely normal, slightly cautious, drive.

There's plenty of variations as well of course for a Martini 037.
Red or white mudflaps (white also sometimes had the Martini logo on them) instead of black, put on a generic DiRT Rally number sticker instead of a specific event, etc so it doesn't look out of place no matter where you go.
Always room for more. Choice is a good thing!

Like this? (ignore the Martini sticker on top of the bumper; I forgot to erase that portion and I didn't notice it until I uploaded the picture :D )
I also added the Pirelli sidewalls, but I think I should make it a little higher. Thoughts?
