AHA! Thats why I couldn't see the custom liveries I D/L from hoonhead in the selection screen, so how can you tell if you have the custom livery selected?

Mick. :)
Set up a custom race and watch your car roll up to the start. I did it before and found out that I can't use the RS200 because my settings aren't high enough. Devvo'd :( But on the plus side, my RS500 looks gorgeous :)

Hey all, converted the best historic rally liveries i made for DiRT3 for the game DiRT Rally.

DiRT Rally - Historic Rally Pack

You can download the custom livery here:

Nice going hoonhead! Hope that we will see soon the Barron Rally Team for the M3 :)

I wonder if we will see soon the alitalia stratos and Martini S4 from DevTechSource converted, they were pretty cool

For Ameblo (the japanese website), look like he already converted some of his historical liveries

Is there anything needed to convert D3 liveries? I'd like to port a couple of mine over. I did look at your instructions on your site but it appeared to be the same process/file formats.

Don't worry  - took a look at the new PSSG files, I can see they've moved a few things around!

If anyone can make the Ras Ford/Fina-Aprimatic 1995livery for the Escort Rs Cosworth I will be hugely grateful.

I humbly submit the one livery I hastily threw together this morning... I had to make a Team Mikuru-Run car, since in every game that I've had a team in I make a livery for it...

If you want Steam Workshop support you need to really shout at us about it

I think, Steam Workshop would perfectly fit to the Early Access, doesn't it?

So just to recap:
at the moment the Ego PSSG Editor cannot correctly export Dirt Rally textures (at least the main dds, which is the key one we need to mod liveries), so the only solution is using content from Dirt 3, which is mapped exactly the same?

I've done tons of RBR cars and I'll be glad to redo some of them for Dirt Rally.

No - you have 2 possibilities:

1) Open file with latest version of Ego PSSG Editor, mark texture you want to edit (4ex. xxx_main.tga),then go to tab All Sections, and look for textelFormat - you should see something like dxt1_srgb, or dxt5_srgb. Then simply erase "_srgb", and when you'll back to Textures tab, texture will be visible. Then you can export it, edit, and import new one. Before saving updated pssg file, I suggest to put this "_srgb" back on its place - I didn't checked if game work normal if you not do it.

2) go to @hoonhead site (www.rallygamer.com), and download PSSG v10.1 beta. It can read, show preview, and export of textures with this "_srgb", but if you import texture it will overwrite it to normal type (for example "dxt5" instead of "dxt5_srgb"), so you still need add "_srgb" manually.

OK thanks for the info.

edit:
Just a little note about car textures I found (and I'm sure other already discovered):
Codemasters upped the resolution to a very nice 4096x4096, not just for the main texture (was 2048 in Dirt 3), but also for the specular map (was 1024) which is now very nicely detailed.
So it's pretty obvious that importing old textures to DR is not optimal, because texture detail is at least 2 times inferior.

OK- here is another shout out- WE NEED MODS TO BE SUPPORTED! I don't care if it's steam workshop (most user friendly probably), or some other way. Please let guys do tracks, cars, whatever. Give community base to play with, they will expand it. For free.

It would be very nice if the community could get official support for mods. If Steam Workshop is the way forward with that, cool... During the early access period [as promotion], you could run a few livery contests that could make it into the final game!? A specific custom livery slot or two per car would be nice, with plain livery place holders that can be over-written!?

This is my first ever game in DiRT series, so I'm not familiar with re-skinning methods which apply here. Is it possible to choose which default livery "slot" will be replaced with custom scheme by just re-naming the files? To make it more clear - I've downloaded two historic Metro 6R4 repaints from two different authors, both are made to go into slot 7 ("livery_45"). If I just edit filenames in one of them to "_44" suffix, will it work in slot 6, or is some more serious editing required?

You don't need serious editing, as you said, ypu anly need to change the suffix

Steam Workshop would be a great idea. If Codies can open up the database or allow the addition of new liveries to the database through a tool or ingame, that would be a great start for allowing modding. There's plenty of keen modders out there that would participate and help create a legacy for this game expanding many years. If not, well I might see what I can do in the mean time anyway.

Please Codemasters allow modders to add any number of custom liveries for any cars without overwriting existing files, as well as seeing them in game menu.

Speaking of liveries, there's another small thing that could really help the modders.
Instead of giving us pseudo-template like some of the liveries already included in the game (basically, all the car with just a background colors and a side number plate), would be great to have a real photoshop template with a base color layer and more importantly, a reference wireframe layer so that we could see the exact boundaries of the model.
At the moment I'm using a specular map for reference (better than nothing), but it's not nearly as precise as having a wireframe layer!

Yes, followed the readme file and that worked wonderfully but if I recall in dirt 3 there was a way to edit the database and add them rather than replacing? Thanks for your work, especially the impreza it's great.
yeah that is sadly not possible anymore since i think grid 2, they protected the database.bin file so we cannot access it anymore. So we can only replace existing liveries.
The particle files, on the other hand, can now be accessed without any conversions, though the more advanced particle systems xmls appear to be missing. Of course, I don't plan on touching those until post release, and even then I doubt I'll be doing much, if any, editing, since I'm largely satisfied with the particles in the new game.

It turns out that I also have the reading skills of a 5 year old, I threw the file straight into livery_44, instead of into the textures_high folder inside livery_44. I just put it in the correct folder and it works beautifully. :)
