There are no easy tricks. The only way it's by trial and error: checking, adjusting, checking, adjusting, repeat until you're exhausted. You can speed up the process a little by placing temporary elements to be used as reference (colored boxes, lines, etc.).
(Are you using the alpha from the specular map in multiply...?)
I'm definitely using the alpha from the spec map.
Well that sucks though, I wish there was at least some UV maps for me to use. At least I have DiRT 3 to preview the skins before carrying it over to Rally.

Car: Ford Escort RS Cosworth Group A
Year: 1996 (accurate game model)
Drivers: Carlos Sainz/Luis Moya
Rally: generic (based on Rally of Sweden)
Installation folder: DiRT Rally\cars\models\ers\livery_44\textures_high
Version: 1
Released: June 11th 2015
Author & contacts: meerkat80 (aka rivers); rallymeerkat.wordpress.com

Description:
A remake of my favourite version of Sainz' Cosworth from 1996, without the blue bumper as it appeared in Sweden and the Tamiya model. I made it originally for Richard Burns Rally as a skin for a new model; now it's native 4k, with specular, glass and only in high resolution PSSG. It replace the empty blue Escort (in v0.41).

Hi all.

I would like to make some custom liveries for this great game but I came across a big problem. I've tried to follow the steps described in rallygamer.com but all of the software described there is not available for my mac except for photoshop (which I already have). The thing is that I'm based on a mac because I'm a graphic designer and have all the graphic tools in it. My pc is only for gaming. Is there any alternatives out there to pack/unpack PSSG files on a mac? Also the Nvidia plugin for photoshop seems to be for the pc only. Any help would be great!

Great work being made here btw.

Thanks!

Your best bet would be to unpack the PSSG files on the PC, then use a tool such as DXTBmp to convert the DXT5 (dds) files to 32-bit BMPs or TGA. Tiny and safe tools like those aren't going to clutter up the PC much and don't even need installing.
Then move those files over to the Mac, do what you do, and reverse the process to repack everything on the PC.

edit: this is a post I wrote like a week ago and suddenly got approved now.
I removed everything because the content is now obsolete.

I removed useless parts.

So here's an update on what I've been working on in the past days:

- I'm writing a tutorial on car skinning. It's not covering everything from the start, and it's more an advanced tutorial to get a better result, on par (or higher, if you have patience) with the stock textures made by the devs. First part is about preview in Dirt 3 and preventing artifacts. I'll cover white/black/color points and specular maps in the next parts. Part one is here. Suggestions are welcome.

- I made a summary of the most relevant skins released so far by the community, with the goods and bads of each one.

So, this is something that I feel Codies should comment on pretty fast - conversions from DiRT 3...
Model cars from the Dirt Rally ported from Dirt 3. They have no new car is not presented in the game.
uhm, Sorry, but didn't quite understand what you meant there...
Means that Codemasters haven't got any newer model cars in DiRT rally instead their using cars that are in DiRT 3.
Ye, I just wondered about the legality of users converting from old games to new games, and Codemasters view on that.
I know SimBin allowed some conversions some years ago, but usually it's a breach of copyright laws and agreements.

Yup, I'm just wondering about the legality of it all...
