So, this is something that I feel Codies should comment on pretty fast - conversions from DiRT 3...
Model cars from the Dirt Rally ported from Dirt 3. They have no new car is not presented in the game.
uhm, Sorry, but didn't quite understand what you meant there...
Means that Codemasters haven't got any newer model cars in DiRT rally instead their using cars that are in DiRT 3.
Yup, I'm just wondering about the legality of it all...
There's nothing remotely illegal about using their own assets that they created in the first place.
The 'standard' model cars in Gran Turismo 5 and 6 are ports from Gran Turismo 4. That's why there is such a monumental gap in quality between premium (PS3) and standard (PS2) cars.

As for users doing it, well, what you do on your own PC for your personal use is your own business.
However, distributing those 'converted' files by putting them online for others to download is another matter entirely.
That's essentially pirating substantial content from a game. For example, if someone owned DiRT Rally but not DiRT 3.

It's a bit inaccurate to say they are just using the models from DiRT 3 as if it's a drag and drop, because that's not true at all.
While they seem to be using the same source files rather than creating new ones from scratch, all of the models have been re-compiled and feature additional texture assignments and for all we know, tweaks and adjustments to the 3D models themselves.
For example, the main texture archive for the 1995 Impreza in DiRT Rally features 15 separate texture maps while the main texture archive for the DiRT 3 car only had 10. You can't just drop in new textures or give them new names and have them appear on a 3D model, they have to be assigned and mapped in modelling software and the model recompiled.
https://twitter.com/BrySkyeGaming/status/609434388816900096
There can also be minor issues doing a drag & drop from DiRT 3 to DiRT Rally, for example with the Celica
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lg9NnzYq8gE
For the first 4 minutes and 8 seconds, the front and rear lights are essentially blacked out when not illuminated.
They briefly pop to life between 4:08 and 4:12 before blacking out again and alternate through the rest of the run.

Meerkat, as I'm not registered at RD, I'll ask here - the link for Salonen's 205 is advertised as Version 2 (supposedly uploaded today), but the archive contains may the 25th files only - wasn't it version 1?

I still got the pictures I collected ages ago when I was considering to make it for RBR, but at the time I did instead the WRC version. Frankly, the idea of these connected stripes going over every different section of the car makes me sick only thinking of all the trial and errors I had to do. Sorry, not this one :/

(There was some things here that exist in my own copy of DiRT Rally, but you can't see them anymore)

And while I had the resolution cranked up to 1800p (then downscaled to 1260p in photoshop), snapped this as well.

Though it did leave me wondering if there was a particular texture file or alpha channel I could edit to get ride of the dirt/mud overlay on the cars.
For the sake of clear preview screenshots of liveries like @meerkat80 has asked for.

Not a drag and drop. Exported/Imported the appropriate dds files from the DiRT3 PSSG to DiRT Rally.

He guys and girls, Bought and downloaded the early access game yesterday and i must say it looks very good, sadly not a next generation game but it will do :-) Keep up the good work Codemasters. For starters the game looks good, feels good and sounds good. The roads are more narrow so that is a new challenge. Also the stages are long..YES. The menu also looks very good, simple, fast and gives you all the info you need although i miss the stage distance in the select menu. Anyway i wouldn´t be me if i didn´t release something within a day :-))) so here is my first mod and maybe i also release a few car liveries today.... The only thing i didn´t like about the game is the close chase cam so made me one that i like. i hope Codemasters releases an update with an extra camera position that is similar to the one i made. I made one for every car (17x in total, updates will follow with new cars) that is in the first early access release of the game.

DiRT Rally - Close Chase Cam Mod

You can download the mod here:

http://www.rallygamer.com/dirtrally/mods/close-chase-cam-mod.html

Thankyou @hoonhead this is a fantastic little camera mod! Seemingly minor but for me it makes a big difference and It feels much better now, I know I will set better times now, I can see more of the road  ahead and sense what the back end is doing more!

I was wondering if it possible/ easy to position the camera just a tiny bit further back? (and maybe up as well).

Can I do this myself by editing the xml file? So as not to trouble you..

Perhaps I just need to know what I am looking for?

He all, got 2 new mods for you all.

DiRT Rally - On Screen Display Mod

This mod changes the original on screen display and then espacially the rev bar color and the schift ring color. The rev bar color changes from white to orange to red (orange is added). The shift ring color is changed slightly to match the orange in the rev bar.

For more info and the download you can visit my website here:

http://www.rallygamer.com/dirtrally/mods/on-screen-display-mod.html

DiRT Rally - Pace Notes Mod

This mod changes the original on screen pace notes. The differences with the original is that now only 5 different colors are used instead of the 10 colors used in the original. The new colors are more distinctive. Green for the fast corners, yellow for the slower corners, orange for the dangerous corners, red for the hairpins and white is for general use. Together with the spoken pace notes and those fewer colors it is easier to know what is coming.

For more info and the download you can visit my website here:

http://www.rallygamer.com/dirtrally/mods/pace-notes-mod.html

Thanks for these Mods too! The Pace Notes mod is a very noticeable improvement and helps alert you much better, great job

They should put these mods (Chase Cam & Pace Notes) in the game! Or at the very least, put them in as options.

Touch? You mean modify it?
No, I didn't modify the livery in any way, though I'm perfectly entitled to do that on my own HDD for my own personal use, so long as I don't redistribute it or claim it as my own. :P

All I did was extract the ers_glass and ers_main dds files from your DiRT 3 PSSG and then import them into a DiRT Rally PSSG.
Since the models aren't 100% the same between DiRT 3 and DiRT Rally, if I just dumped the DiRT 3 PSSG into DiRT Rally, there would be missing textures.
Still not perfect of course. For example the ers_specocc hasn't been updated and just using the DiRT 3 one would result in a glowing car since the levels seem to have been adjusted between the two games.
Can the ers_speco. Be modified?  I would really like to see the shine dulled down a lot.  Rally cars don't end up show are per say. clean yes at the start but not The garage kept Ferrari they look like now.  This is my opinion of course, but it would be nice mod.

It MUST be in order to have a decent looking car skin, and after trying all the best texture made from the community (at least published on Race Dep, I didn't look elsewhere) I can easily tell you that only a minor part of them use a correct and complete specular. Some packs even use the wrong specular from the stock PSSG it's replacing. Specular and bad white/black/color luminance and saturation is another big problem I found in almost the majority of the skin.

Most of the connection of the Martini stripes looks a bit messy...
It's not perfect by any means, but for a Martini Racing fan, it's a lot better than not having it at all, especially for such a tricky one.
Kudos to @mesa for having a good crack at it. In DiRT 3.

I think I need to clarify, can specular mapping change the gloss on any car?

Yes it's what it does. Darker areas reflect less.

Would it be possible if someone could extract a model from DiRT 3 or Rally for skinning reference in Zmodeler? Running back and forth from Photoshop and the game was getting messy for me and I accidentally overwrote a default livery with no backup in my DiRT 3 game. I hope the devs don't mind...

Reported.
You should really calm down, and maybe find a way to distribuite your material by license if you don't want to it to be used and modified, even without redistribuition. Otherwise it would be just hypocritical, considering we are all modifying copyrighted material in the first place.

Alas, it's Ravenwest http://i.imgur.com/6tZQe97.jpg
Still not finished though, I need to resize the stripes on the roof and give it proper specular maps. Does anyone have a tutorial on that?

Oh dear. To repeat it, I did NOT touch your livery at all anyway. It's never been opened in any kind of image editing program.
Two completely unmodified and untouched .dds files have merely gone from one PSSG archive into another.
That is no different from me putting them into a zip file.
Would you also be upset if the PSSG archive was renamed so that it replaced a different livery in DiRT 3 from the one you intended?
Because that's the rabbit hole we're starting to look down.

Perhaps be a little more careful where you tread. Remember that some of the textures in that PSSG archive which you distribute are also 100% Codemasters original work, completely unmodified, and not your own. Such as the textures related to lights and damage.
This makes it completely beyond your power to apply a license or prevent access to the archives contents.

Strictly
speaking and adhering to the modders code, only the modified files should be distributed with people building their own PSSG archives, rather than including any unmodified content from the games. That's how things have been done for... hmmm... over 16 years in the flight simulator community.

Screenshots and 'instructions' (not that they really were) removed, but it will stay firmly in working order on my HDD.
Just as we freely modify Codemasters files, despite that being against the likes of the Codemasters Software Company Limited Software License Agreement, what I do on my own HDD for my own personal use is entirely my own business.
