Champions Crowned at F1® Esports Grand Final

Recommended Posts

Last night, the F1® New Balance Esports Pro Series came to a dramatic climax. If you haven’t watched it yet, no fear, you can catch up on EVERYTHING right here. We’ll wait.

The Grand Final started with FDA Hublot Esports Team’s David Tonizza sitting 26 points ahead of his nearest rival. Four drivers were in contention for the driver championship – title leader Tonizza, Red Bull Racing Esports’s Frederik Rasmussen, Renault Sport Team Vitality’s Jarno Opmeer and Alfa Romeo Racing F1 Esports Team’s Daniel Bereznay.

A four-way fight for the trophy.

The first race of the night: Suzuka, Japan. Williams Esports driver Alvaro Carreton started the race on pole, but was chased down by the charging Bull of Rasmussen, who would go on to take the chequered flag. SportPesa Racing Point Esports’s Lucas Blakeley took second, his best result of the Pro Series so far. Toro Rosso Esports Team’s Patrik Holzmann took the last podium place.

From four to two. The showdown at Suzuka whittled down our title contenders to just David Tonizza and Frederik Rasumussen.

Onto the next race: Circuit of the Americas. Rasmussen started on pole position, charging to victory, and with rival Tonizza finishing in sixth, took lead of the driver championship by four points with just one race to go, securing the Teams’ title for Red Bull Racing Esport’s too!

This was it. The final race of the Series, and what a stage for the final race – Interlagos. David Tonizza put his car on pole position, Rasmussen started seventh. The scene was set for a dramatic last race. Starting beside Tonizza on the grid was Bereznay, and as the lights went out the pair traded places for the lead, whilst Rasmussen pitted early, trying to see if an undercut would help his fortunes. The bold strategy failed to come to fruition, as he left the pits in thirteenth place, and struggled to get further than tenth. Daniel Bereznay took the chequered flag, with David Tonizza coming over the line in second, confirming him as the driver’s champion for 2019!

Phew – what a Series! You can see how it all unfolded with our Twitter Moment of the night below!
