Bit more (useless) information for you @BatteredSav93 is that Prodrive actually used "S" designations for the pre-Impreza Subaru programs, specifically: S1 - Group A Legacy S2 - Group N Legacy S3 - Group A Impreza Neither he, nor anyone else ex-Prodrive who has answered me, can explain why they skipped S4 (someone on the forum here pointed out there was an S4 SVX model, so maybe skipped to avoid confusion with the staff in Japan?). The information from Martyn does tie a lot of loose ends together though: I couldn't understand why the WRCar spares lists only ran from S5 to S14, but the parts breakdown for individual cars show some parts prefixed with S3: S3 parts are Group A Impreza parts that were used on the WRCars. So, I can't confirm it 100%, but I found this, and as the Japanese seems to be a superstitious bunch, I think it might be it. Edit: Apparently they skip 4th floor in buildings as well. Four is an unlucky number in Japan because it sounds like shi (死 – death). This is why there are two readings for the number four, shi and yon. Whenever possible, people try to avoid using the deathy one. The same is true of the ku (九 – nine), which sounds like ku (苦 – suffering, agony or torture).7 jan. 2019 Edited March 7, 2020 by bogani 1
tbtstt 2,405 Posted March 7, 2020 Well that is another strong contender @bogani: they skipped 13, so definitely not unfeasible to think 4 was skipped for the same reason!
