If there’s a DiRT Rally 3, what features do we want to see?

I'm not suggesting making people always go flying into the air when they leave the track, that would be ridiculous. I just want the edges of the road to be more realistic, meaning you can break your car or get it stuck if the scenery implies that's what would happen in real life. If it looks like nice smooth grass or something, feel free to cut or go wide as much as you can, since that's likely what real rally drivers would (and have) done.

I think you're imagining something nobody actually wants. We want the game to be better, which in general means more realistic.

The issue of cheaters is kind of incidental to this - if more realistic roadside terrain reduces the opportunity for large cuts, great, but that's a bonus, not the main goal. Cutting should be addressed separately, and done so it seems natural, like advertising boards or extra trees or something in the way.

I don't think they add trees or signs in real life to make leaving the track more dangerous lol.

If in /real life/ that part of the track is unsafe then fine. Otherwise leave it alone, as is, there are many sections that I'm almost certain have added **** that wouldn't be there in real life just to please the weird part of the community that thinks More difficult = more realistic. Its enough already, stop trying to make it get to the point where only the ultra hardcore that play ONLY Dirt rally and literally nothing else can enjoy the game.

On the note of realism, If I had it my way, auto resets would be gone entirely and I could go off a long ways and still be able to recover the car myself. I've seen drivers go significantly off course and still get back on track and go on to win. Meanwhile I get reset 2 cm off course. (slight exaggeration obviously.)

And on the flip side, if I go off a damn cliff, I'd not just be teleported back to the track. There of course should remain the option to reset to the track, for instances where you get stuck (Where in real rally fans would push you free lol ) but aside from that I should never be reset.

For me, I get tired of randomly placed objects right on the edge of the track catching my rear bumper or some ****, but nothing ruins my fun more than being reset. I've rolled my car 3 times and smashed into a rock and had to change a tire, guaranteeing my loss, and kept going, only to alt F4 because some stupidly placed 'fan' that cannot move because they are statues in the game, caused me to reset while part of my car was actually still on track. Or I miss judge a corner and slide wide manage to miss a rock and tree, only to be reset as I try to turn around to get back on track.

TLDR More frustrating =/= better or more realistic stop ****ing with things.

One thing to bear in mind is that the development team will have their own creative vision for future titles, which is what they'll go ahead with first and foremost.

They will have ideas about the game(s) they want to make, learnings from previous titles, insights into how people played/received previous games etc.

If some of the things they're considering line up with what people are suggesting then that's great, and can lead them more in that direction or inspire ideas/details they hadn't considered before. It's not like a feedback thread "designs a game from scratch" however, more like "is there a trend in what people are desiring that we may be able to satisfy"?

That's my opinion anyways, I could be wrong 🙂

Although not directly related to future titles, this video on player feedback is a good one:

Right,

Here's my wishlist...  I make no apologies for wanting to recreate the rallies I watched as a kid (so late 80s GpA).

1 - Toyotas.  Please.   Late 80s Gt-4 and some of the early 90s ones too.

2 - PLEASE let me select all the cars I want in a rally.  I'd love GpA, some of the RWD ones and the 205 and Golf.

3 - Can I change the names please?  I play offline and would love to see M Alen on a list!

4 - Let me use different stages from different rallies to make my own rally.

5 - Would it be possible to have Group N versions of cars?  Would be really simple to have a de-tuned Escort RS Cos, Sierra, VW Golf etc etc.  Slightly different handling, possibly different interiors, almost identical exteriors and a lot more options available to us.

6 - Could some country's stages be 'alterable'?  How about the Monte stages with gravel in the summer?  Germany with dirt and possibly snow?  Wales with snow...or dust?  Etc etc.

7 - Long stages.  Like 'really' long.  Think Mobile 1 Rally Challenge style.

8 - My dream, I want a late 80s RAC Rally spectator stage!

Lots of good stuff mentioned here laready. The main thing for me is VR mode from the start.

Not only that, some thought to the VR spectator screen view so that content creators can showcase VR gameplay to other people (thinking of buying it for VR). Have a look at what Valve did for Half-Life Alyx spectator view, that added image stablisation and additional OSD information to make the experience more appealing to viewers.

Have we already listed "Better player stats" on this wishlist? What do I mean by this?

  1. The odometers in Time Trial cars should work. Some people spend literally days in there over the life of the game chasing down different WR's, let me see how many miles I've ended up putting on the different Time Trial cars. Keep it completely separated from My Team, that's fine, but why don't we have more stats about what we do in Time Trials
  2. Give us just STATS about each game mode. How many miles/hours driven in My Team. How many in Time Trial? How many in online MP lobbies? How many in Colin's Challenges? That's literally 1 stat that I'd want to see in at least 5 different filtered styles; My Team, TT, Customs, Colin's, and Total. Expand on that; which car is used the most per location; per mode; classes, etc. These are all the cool little details car enthusiasts can eat up and love to do it. This is what let's people "bond" with the cars. You feel connections to them.
  3. You have all of this online stuff, WHY AREN'T ANY OF THE STATS FROM IT AVAILABLE. Why can't I see how many total Daily events I have entered? Where is the stat showing my % of top tier placements compared to entries.
  4. Stage records should be easily available to see; we should be able to compare across cars/classes, against our own times in other classes/cars and compared to friends or the online community as a whole. If I pull up Sweet Lamb, Wales in a records/leaderboard style menu I want to see my fastest PB, and then be able to see my PB for every class below it too - let me then select the class and select a specific car to see that PB.
  5. We do cool things, let us obsess and go OCD over stats.

I keep meaning to write a really long post, but whilst this is in my mind:

- Please don't abandon the 'offline' career aspect or competing vs AI

- Help give the AI some sense of personality and order - I know you must get tired of RBR glorification, but RBR had AI modifiers for consistency, aggression, mechanical sympathy

- That the 'broken' cars you pass in stage are the same ones as on the leaderboard are great, but at the moment I can't even see the liveries each driver is assigned in the UI to know who I've passed and whether they're a rival - I know this assignment is made by the game, because the one you see set off in the animation before a stage loop is consistent with the name ahead of you

- Keep the super difficult AI! The only time I've been bored in DR1 or DR2 was the first couple of seasons in DR2 when I could crash and still win stages by a minute

- Similarly to drivers, in RBR each car also had attributes - I'd love to be in a position where the defacto 70s class had Stratos' excelling on tarmac but struggling on loose, Escorts being durable rocks that didn't break and 131s being great all-rounders - in R5s in real life, the Citroen has typically had more success on asphalt with the Fiesta being better on gravel and the Fabia being a great all-rounder - only small modifiers, but would be great to have, especially for classes with more varied cars

- The dynamic calendars and events you have in DR1 and DR2 are a highlight for me; it's great that each 'season' you compete in is unique - please keep some aspect of this

- More care about the development of weather, times of day (should be morning and afternoon by default, with a chance of evening and a small chance of night or dawn) and stage 'looping' (same order of stages in the afternoon that were run in the morning)- Being more ambitious, instead of upgrading your own car and choosing to boost this or that, the quality would be determined by the team you rent a car from for the season, with the option to be hired by a works team for the 'perfect' version of the car (the latter part of which PC2 started to play with)

- Redo the car classes, please... I'll rewrite a longer post on this, but the Lancia Delta competed v Ford Sierras and M3s in real life and the Evo VI rallied against the '01 Focus and the two early 2000CC Subarus. That the Stratos is in a different class to the Escort and 131 Abarth is a travesty.

I want to see Racenet developed further and implement the CREST system from the original DiRT Rally. Also some kind of persistent stat tracking (which CREST also had), like average finish percentile in dailies just to give a bit more meaning to the multiplayer. As it is now you just do dailies and then new ones pop up the next day. Nothing wrong with that, but it would be nice to have stats saved somehow.

Most of everything is covered here, but I'd also like some detailed statistics, to see which car I'm most successful in by class, drive, era, what I usually go for, perhaps even some driving stats on throttle /brake percentages, late/early apexes etc. It would be cool to see the replays of the top 10 players in time trial to analyze their inputs and wheel angles, not just ghosts. And finally, if I finish masters career I wanna be able to show it off to that one person who would also appreciate it without having to make a screenshot at a particular moment, but that's just my very particular pet peeve 🙂

Just a small request: a better chase cam (yes, some people don't have a wheel and play on chase cam), make it more stiff and closer to the car. That "zoom-in/zoom-out" effect is too exaggerated and anoying 🙂

You have two chase cam views... the second for me is stiffer and doesn't have the zoom-in/out effect... unlike WRC games :classic_laugh:

Having the co-driver tell you how long you got left on the stage if you get a puncture.

Being able to see how much penalty everyone had in their stages

Being able to see how much and what kind of damage you got after a stage even if its not a service stop. I assume the drivers are allowed to take a look at their car after a stage?

The most important thing for me is Full triplescreen support, just like in all other true sims. We must be able to correctly adjust the FOV, adjust the correction to the bezels and angle of the side monitors to get the most correct picture without distortion.

More cars! More F2, the Megane being my favourite. I know Toyota are very picky with their license, but the St185 Celica and Corolla WRC please! Also the Escort WRC, Octavia WRC, Accent WRC and Cordoba WRC.

A new Welsh stage - Gartheniog or Dyfi would be a great stage imo.

Improved Pace notes.

A new asphalt event, Manx, Ireland or a mixed surface event like classic San Remo.

On RX better positions for starting lights because you is obliged to listen the sound ( And sometimes the beep  sound  not work (Example today i drive in estering and i wait 15 second for enough  and if you start on right on estering  you not see  the starting lights ) ( for onboard wiew)( Other tracks have same problem  But not all)

Not sure if it's been mentioned yet, but trackside replays could be much more gritty and exciting if the model of the almighty RBR is followed. That game still has superior replays:

- lower to the ground camera positions,

- cameras wobble, zoom and shift in the manner of hand-held operation by tv crews.

Currently it's a step up from DR1 but the trackside camera replays have a more abstract, less visceral feel than RBR. It's too smooth and automated a feeling. Observe and marvel:

More incentive to stay on the road

This already is in place. This is how it is in real life too, you can go a bit off track and be fine most the time. Sometimes its not fine and there is a rock or a deep trench or a cliff...etc. But I agree with every other thing you stated.

One thing I havent seen mentioned that I want to see is the crowds move out of the way instead of stand there and let you hit them...it sucks to have a random bystander that would normally run away irl, just stand there and force you to get a penalty and reset to track. Takes me out of the moment.

I know it would be more taxing on the games resources but I think the addition would be worth it for the extra realism.

The running order could also mean we could have a dynamic weather system at last, so that some players may get rain, while others not.

I like a lot of what you said but having the stages somewhat equal makes for a better race in my opinion. The surface degradation does give an incentive to do your best to get out ahead of everybody but if you want rain for one person and dry weather for the next, that just wouldnt be fun. Rain sucks for driving in real life lol.

If you want a more realistic experience you might also want to have dust in the air from the previous runs...which will be for EVERYONE but the person in front. You know how many people would be ****** if they had to play the game with "haze" on every dry, dusty stage.

Perhaps the solution would be to create a dedicated "hardcore" lobby for online with all the extra details left out of the main game.

I know I would play on hardcore exclusively but It would make a lot of people mad if it was in the base game.

Has there been a thread about this? If so, @PJTierney please merge

But what types of things would make for a fun and rewarding off-line career mode?

I'm not a fan of management stuff, hiring engineers and that malarkey.

But I'd like a choice of multiple events at any one time, and a progression with some fun elements. Rivals with character and strengths/flaws, team bosses with same, unexpected set-backs, unexpected advantages, offers, one-off events, advertising contracts (maybe), e-mails, tv spots. I dunno.

What I do know is that if we see mandatory race-net connection for any type of career progress, that'd be a major let-down.

I want them to take the environments from DIRT5 and make proper rally stages from them.

Also this. Make the career more engaging. A lot of the systems concerning that are in place in other codemasters titles so it wouldn't be that hard to consider them for DiRT Rally 3

I would like to share my suggestions as well. I hope these ideas haven't been suggested already.

Add a better track generator along with the usual stages - DiRT 4 had a lot of potential with the track generator. Too bad it wasn't as amazing as I thought. Generated tracks feel the same, there's not much variety. I think that a better algorithm with more variety would make this feature a lot better and it would greatly improve the overall longevity of the game. Some tracks in DiRT Rally and DiRT Rally 2.0 can be memorized fairly well. Randomized tracks would make the experience a lot more challenging in my opinion.

Add at least one more long stage for every location - DiRT Rally and DiRT Rally 2.0 share the same policy of managing tracks: each location has two long stages, these two stages are splitted in half and every variant is driven the normal way and in reverse, making a total of 12 stages per location. Adding one more long stage would add 6 more stages, for a total of 18 which is plenty and it would also make track memorisation harder.

Some cars to add - I noticed that some DiRT Rally cars are missing in DiRT Rally 2.0, I would love to have them back in DR 3.0 especially the 2011 Ford Fiesta RS WRC (which is my favourite rally car 😅), the 2015 Volkswagen Polo R WRC and the 1984 Audi Sport quattro B2.

i would like to see some kind of race craft rating , like how safe you drive, how often you crash the car, how good your times are and all these would make a rating number or rank .
